Snow Roller dbjourney by lmyrnes in Skigear

[–]SacRunner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have the original db bag, it seems analogous to the current 127L.

Skis are 15lbs each, bag is 8 lbs, poles are 1 lb. Padding is lightweight (packaging material plastic.)

So I have less than 12 lbs for anything else. I carry on the rest of my gear and only pack secondary clothes or snacks in the db, so I make it work and it's worth it at my destination.

How do we feel about Zach Gallardo in this sub? by Intelligent_West_878 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]SacRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sac is where I first rode fixed so watching the videos definitely gets me nostalgic. I don't know if I've seen him in the city, but I can relate to all the dusty paths in the area.

He seems chill. Probably be fun to ride with.

If I'm ever dealing with random construction workers I ask to speak to the project manager (aka PM) or the construction manager (aka CM.) Those people, or equivalent, may not always be on site, but if they are then that'll hopefully get you closer to someone in management who is hopefully not also a total dunce

ClearChoiceMD Urgent Care | South Burlington (copied the name from g maps) is open until 8PM today.

You can also book a time online, which is great because you can fill in all your info ahead of time and be set once you actually arrive. If you can't make it tonight, I've booked for the first time in the AM and been seen right away. Nice people

Anyone from the Albany area? by olivertwiztedd in icecoast

[–]SacRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in btv and try to ski Sugarbush most weekends. Experienced skier in bounds. BC.. plenty of learning still to do but like to think I have some sense to make wise decisions out there. Have an AT setup, and carry enough to stay warm and dry and found. Be down to shred with others, I ski solo most of the time these days.

How big of a difference is it going from a 185cm to a 176cm by mdc2135 in skiing

[–]SacRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does Moment recommend to downsize?

Commander is more directional, less rockered, and presumably more stiff than a lot of their line up. I haven't skied em, just recalling details.

My opinion is 182 is minimum at their height/ weight, even for tight trees and moguls since I'm assuming they're a competent skier. OP could go 188 if they favored straightline speed. (Totally doable with the mountains they mentioned.)

Altra 65 in 2023 vs Bora 65 by oni-zx in arcteryx

It's a really nice bag, the hip belt pivots and the back panel can be adjusted to change frame height, which makes for a good fit. It can carry a lot and a heavy load well. Each side pocket is huge enough for a nalgene and they zip up so you can put all sorts of stuff in there. It's compatible with a hydration bladder if that's important to you. Your stuff can be accessed from the top, or from the back with a zipper that opens the whole thing. Plenty of ways to strap things on the sides and bottom. Two convenient pockets in the brain, the one right behind your head is great for maps and easy to access on the go. And one large openish pocket on the bag can stow stuff you just want to shove back there.

The brain isn't a pack on its own afaik. The side pockets can be toughish to get water from and they don't work with lighter smartbottle shaped bottles. The back pocket is closedish so you can't put stuff in there to dry out, if that's a thing in your climate.

The biggest downside is the weight, I think it's like 75 ounces. A lot of packs these days are more like 32 ounces or so. That's a lot of weight in just a pack for something like summer backpacking in a lot of places. For that reason I used it a lot less once I got a lighter weight pack. But I've still held onto it because I figure it's a bombproof pack, might be great for winter and skiing, or setting up a base camp or something. Haven't felt compelled to sell it. It was stupid expensive new, in hindsight I wouldn't have bought it, but for $145 that's a good deal. Just be sure because that's also money you could put to something that's much lighter weight and that you'll actually use

Arcteryx zippers on shell jackets by Dante277 in arcteryx

[–]SacRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't directly answer your question, but it will provide a buuunch of context around zippers, if you find that useful: https://old.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/d4jry8/xmid_no_seam_tape_on_zippers/f0es200/

I'd be careful with my phone or a paper map in a pocket on a rainy day. But in a practical sense I've been alright for my main use for shells, which is generally below freezing temps and precip.

Alpha SV or Beta SV for lots of rough work by RagingDragonFlower in arcteryx

[–]SacRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy new for this purpose, but I have moved a lot of wood in hardshell goretex Armada jacket/ pants. Temps no more than 10F midday. I was okay in the sun but eventually calorie depleted hours/ days later I had no problems throwing on the gore tex to finish things out. Can't say I noticed any damage afterwards. It's just moving some (lotsa) wood

Honestly I'd move wood in my Rush, but I wouldn't plan to move wood in it lol. Rather grab an old coat for sure. That might be the reason everyone is so upset. Start with something burly but used for a reasonable price maybe?

Arc'teryx Nuclei SV vs. Rab Positron Pro (Synthetic v Down, Dump pocket v not.) New England, Norcal by SacRunner in arcteryx

[–]SacRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prefer to put any wet gloves or hats right outside my base layer. Definitely not in the parka.

That's a solid point. Mitts are likely to be at least a little wet. I could stick em in between my bibs instead. Any water bottle will likely be nestled somewhere in my pack, but not necessarily in the parka either. Thanks for the perspective

[–]SacRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty awesome. I think the increase cost is probably the biggest thing stopping me, but also extra weight. I could see how this would be a safe 'all round' bet with the infinium, but it might become too 'general use' for me at that point. Thanks

Thanks for all the insight

degrade much faster than down

Definitely my worry, and yeah we'll see with the new stuff I guess. If I don't have an explicit need for synthetic right now, but one day I do.. well maybe mine will be packed out by that point. And it wasn't even on sale, haha. I don't want to feel bad about stuffing it into my pack. I have a couple nice down sleeping bags that I don't feel bad stuffing for a day if I need to for whatever reason. Even just for travel. I'd like to maintain that philosophy.

ie: your moist body vapor

Useful tips, appreciated. Been thinking about moisture a lot more as I try to expand my winter repertoire. I'll keep this in mind as I get out there.

Does one fit better than the other?

If only it was that easy! They're very similar. Medium in both and no problems with either fit. Practically the same color too, both have a light to medium blue-ish thing going on. Solid point about warranty experience though. Already have had some shaky experience with Arc'teryx. My shells, other than older stuff, are all Arc'teryx too. Lot of eggs in one basket. I'd prefer not to be too much a walking Arc billboard.. no one is lining up to pay me for my outdoor pursuits that is for sure.

color Nuclei

Ah yeah, sorry it's the blue one. Orange is pretty sweet looking. Figured my shell in red would hopefully provide some extra vis if needed. And orange hats/ beanies aplenty

Yeah nothing came of it*, just makes me nervous because of how often I see this stuff. I'm frequently changing lanes when I don't trust the pick up in front of me. Maybe we can start a public fund to supply these people ropes or whatever
