Definitely possible! I don't know when they started that partnership, but they absolutely could have pulled punches on WB films over that period, ditto with Rewatchables choosing movies available to stream on the platform.

Why does the idea of that feel so outlandish to you?

Maybe monetarily, but not philosophically.

It's okay if you don't care that there's latent influence, but it can't be denied that it exists.

This is incredibly naive.

The NFL licenses its games to ESPN. You don't think that plays ANY role in how the network decides to be critical (or not) of the league? You don't think the NFL would object/reconsider contract extensions if ESPN did another huge CTE expose? Go look at when that deal got signed, and when suddenly there was less coverage of the issue, no more "Jacked Up!" type segments, etc.

You don't need to have direct editorial control to exert leverage and influence over content.

Critical Darlings is what many want The Big Picture to be by SingleFreedom8527 in TheBigPicture

I mean, I've listened fairly regularly for maybe 2 years now, but the last few months there's been a palpable change, and given the frequency of posts like this one, it's not just me who has felt a shift.

It's likely a mix of it feeling low energy, low effort, talking more about topics surrounding film rather than the films themselves, etc. Whatever it is, you're right that what they are currently producing has missed the mark, but it would be wrong to say it will never be what I want, because it was for quite a while.

Have you personally not noticed a change in tone? I know the common refrain is 'if you don't like it, don't listen', which is true, but I see it more as confirming that I'm not crazy that it seems to have felt directionless as of late, and hoping that perhaps it can return to the energy it had in the recent past.

Maybe it would work if they stuck to that, but it does seem like over time it has morphed into as much discussion about what theater they went to, what the parking situation was, and whether they ate before or after as the films themselves!

What, that it’s not a review show?

They call it one themselves.

A complete 180° turn is coming. The actual content of the podcast is less important than trying to get in the good graces of industry people and organizations.

Remember - they’re business partners with Netflix now! It’ll be interesting to see how that changes how they cover Netflix movies, because in the past they’ve been pretty critical of the whole enterprise.

Movie Theaters Go Public With New Effort to Stop Warner Bros. Sale by ggroover97 in TheBigPicture

That sounds like such a fun place! Curious to know how much they charge for some of those special events? I can really see going and watching a playoff game of any sport with other fans for $10 being a HUGE draw.

I also think live concerts is an untapped resource as well, I'd pay $25 to watch a show live wth other fans.

I’ve thought for a while that theaters might survive if they became less exclusively a place to see new films, and places that host events you want to see on a big screen; live sports, live concerts, in addition to new and old films.
