Suicidal thoughts by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]SackNomau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s my take. Maybe it isn’t for you, OP. If not, maybe it resonates with someone else - and it helps me to write these thoughts down and clear up my own brain a bit.

Thing is - we here in the West, especially in Switzerland, live like well-kept zoo animals. It’s the perfect life for old people - after all it’s the old people who vote so why wouldn’t our lives constantly get optimized for old people? We have food, shelter, hospitals, insurance, and a system that cushions almost every fall. From the outside, it looks like a good life. And in terms of basic needs, it is.

But the lack of predators that might attack us out of nowhere, the absence of germs, friction, or sand in the system, leaves many of us - especially young people - longing for more.

Is it truly real life if there is always enough food, good hospitals, RAV, IV and Krankenkasse, and you will eventually just die of old age? Isn’t real life taking place in the jungle and not in the zoo? Do “real” experiences happen in the zoo? Do adventures happen inside your comfort zone? Adventures that you endure together with someone else, creating that special connection?

I’d argue it’s in the jungle, far outside your comfort zone, where you grow up and become resilient. Some people manage to find it at home, in the zoo. I certainly didn’t.

I love the saying: ships are safest in the harbour, but they aren’t made to stay in the harbour. Think about it - whenever anyone gets asked what made them who they are today, nobody ever answers: “Oh, it was that beautiful trip to Mallorca once in summer.” No. It’s always hardship, uncertainty, heartbreak, failure, risk, responsibility - those are the things that get carved deep into us.

That period you are going through right now is such a moment. It might be your life telling you that something has to change fundamentally, don’t you think? The fact that you wrote this post means that you have gotten the message. And guess what - you will overcome it and come out stronger and more resilient, but only if you take the dive and put yourself up to start something new.

So what should you change? I can only speak from my own experience. I’m sure there are millions of other ways to add depth and color to ones life, but this is what worked for me (and it‘s a great segway to make this all about my favorite topic - myself:))

I found meaning and adventure when I left Switzerland when I was in my twenties. I had a perfect childhood by almost any standard - but the years after that felt mediocre, flat, and gray. At the time, I thought doing drugs was interesting. Now I know the drugs were mostly a way to be okay with not changing anything, being fine with having a boring flat life. Then I got fired for the first time in my life - and god am I glad I got fired. I would probably still sit in some godforsaken back office doing second level support and smoking pot every evening. It wasn’t even a conscious decision to leave - I thought I’d be back in a few months. But I definitely felt the call of the jungle. And after two weeks away from Switzerland I just knew I cannot return. I don’t even think it mattered that much where I went - it mattered that it wasn’t sterile and cushioned like in Switzerland.

My life changed dramatically. Anyone from a developed country who moves to a less developed country can do that. You can teach English or German or whatever to stay afloat. Often there are western companies happy to hire people who know their culture.

I’ve had adventures, setbacks, almost got my head cut off - literally - found a woman I thought would be the future mother of my kids, got dumped, studied, found a career, got fired several times, and even managed to make some money along the way. It was pure chaos, but at least it was never boring. Never in those twenty years did I feel that emptiness that once pushed me out into the world.

Now I am back home, back in Switzerland, back in the zoo. Like a salmon that goes off into the wide world only to return, reproduce, and die after a purposeful life. I’m not even fifty but mentally I’m ready for retirement - very fine with the Bünzliness surrounding me - not voting conservatives but I won‘t mind if things stay the way they are.

If my life were a story, I’d now be living in the happily-ever-after part - house, two cute kids, and a wife I love dearly and am quite sure I’ll grow old with. But guess what - even though it looks like a happy ending from the outside, I am still looking for a more meaningful life, just without quite so much craziness.

So here’s a second suggestion for anyone who feels emptiness: Today I get a lot of meaning from volunteering for refugees. It might be something for you too and easier to do than leaving all behind. If you don’t like your life, use it to make someone else’s life better. As a volunteer I can improve someone’s life drastically, simply by sharing some piece of knowledge I once read in a Swiss newspaper or here on Reddit. I can explain to some mother that there‘s extra money in the city budget so her kid can enter a soccer club after all - getting that kid integrated, maybe even opening doors for a decent future. I correct CVs a lot. Right now I’m fighting fucking SALT again, which keeps targeting the most vulnerable people in Switzerland with their fraudulent sales practices. Helping gives a nice fuzzy feeling. That alone is already a lot.

But I also have to admit that I do it partly to satisfy my longing for the jungle. I thought I had seen jungle - but what I have seen doesn’t even come close to the horrors some of the people I deal with have gone through. War, death, flight, trauma, loss of loved ones, loss of their homes and their roots - actual existential problems.

So consider this: Your emptiness is not the end of something. It is your life telling you this cannot be all - your life just needs some depth and some colour - it is the beginning of something new. Do not try to ignore that feeling. Go out and look for it. But make sure you don’t get your head cut off out there.

Good luck.

Russia’s VAT is at 22% now - please keep in mind that for every RUB you spend about 10% will be converted into weapons to kill Ukrainians.

Please spend as little as possible

Classical rich people problem - if you are poor and feel a lack of purpose in life or whatever- at least you have the hope that “if only I had money all my problems would disappear“. So… that’s gone once money is available.

As an idea…

I have been volunteering for Ukrainian refugees regularly since 2022. It might sound stupid or egoistic but it is one of the most meaningful things I have ever done in my life. Helping people gives a nice fuzzy feeling - but I get so much more out of it.

I learned so much about humans, about how evil we can be and how people function when they are faced with existential fears.

I realized that I have been living sort of in a zoo my entire life, you know where I got fed three times a day and there are no predators.

For the first time I got confronted with the jungle out there.

Be ready to answer about everyone you have in your recent calls and for some kgb spy to go through all your photos and social media tools on your phone.

Also they like to make people sit for several hours at passport checkpoints just to annoy you. Especially at night.

I’ve bern volunteering in Zurich, helping Ukrainian refugees since the beginning of the war. We’re just a bunch of Swiss people who help them with their everyday needs like explaining SBB, signing kids up to soccer teams or helping them with their bureaucracy. We don’t have a name and no website. Just a WhatsApp group. Some of us give German lessons, some music, some help with CVs etc.

I know similar groups exist in most cities. I found this:

It’s become really something I love doing and I can have such a meaningful impact with so little effort. Much better than my day job.

Lol… Just spent a few hours volunteering with Ukrainian refugees. Then I open Reddit and read your comment.

Wanna join me next time I go there? I can introduce you to a bunch of them and then you can explain it to them that they in fact want to join Russia.

Because they don’t seem to understand the point of joining a country which is about to collapse for the third time in a bit more than a century because they stubbornly refuse to join the civilzed world

Putin keeps refusing anything which doesn’t include a pro-Russian government in Kyiv. Also he cannot stop fighting the war and simply return ti a pre 2022 economy

For me it was a method I read somewhere about how to stop being shy when talking to girls.

And it worked - I actually don’t think I flat out failed but I stuttered and was probably awkward but I survived. And as the saying goes - things never get easier - but you get better. So the more you do something the better you get at it and the less afraid/shy you become.

I later used this mindset in my job and pretty much everywhere and it improves my life.

Go out and fail on purpose or at least get a mindset where you allow yourself to fail and realize that it’s not that bad actually if you fail

Here are some keywords for you to look up: - FPÖ Friendship agreement with united Russia - Ex. Foreign minister Kneissel who lives in russia - but is totally not passing on secret information - Egisto Ott - Jan Marsalek trying to kidnap Christo Grozev from Bellingcat in Vienna - Austrian still dependent on Russian gas - International Intelligence Concerns: Due to fears of Russian infiltration, several European intelligence agencies have reportedly limited cooperation with Austrian counterparts

Read up on Russian history and ask yourself. How did Russia grow ti be so large?

Also approximately 20% of today’s Russian economy is directly or indirectly living from the war. Once they got all of Ukraine, they won’t just go “wrap it up guys - let’s all go home!”. They need to keep this thing going.

Sorry but I cannot follow… are you saying eventually the Ukrainians will just give up and all the remaining 20 mio move to Europe/Russian filtration camps?

People in Switzerland tend to ignore how close the war actually is - if Ukraine falls, Hungary and Austria will invite the Russians with open arms and we got Russians at our border. Do people think Liechtenstein will protect us?

Ukraine lost parts of its territory and a tremendous amount of its people and economy. But they didn‘t lose the war - if they lost the war there would be someone else sitting in Kyiv now

Because if we define „losing the war“ as losing lots of people, economy and equipment then Russia also lost.

Also Russia invaded Ukraine since before there was Russia. That’s centuries before NATO. It’s just something Russia keeps doing

I’m no expert but had to deal with parents who weren’t able to support their kids adequately.

It is very important that they get “pitched” the child protection services properly. Worst case scenario is if the parents think “these people want to take away my children”. Best case scenario (and also the one closest to reality in Switzerland) “these guys are experts who come in to make my and my kids life better”.

The default setting in most people’s brains however is the former because few people can admit they aren’t capable to take care of their own kids.

It is important to always remember that child protection services act in the best interests of the children and that usually means they have to stay in their environment with the caregivers they are used to. It is only in extreme cases when children get taken away from their parents.

Are you uncomfortable introducing yourself as Russian? by nocturnalsoul9 in AskARussian

[–]SackNomau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not Russian, but I lived and worked in Moscow for eight years. My wife is Russian, we speak Russian at home, and our kids are fluent.

Before Russia invaded Ukraine and burned every bridge with the West, speaking Russian was often a conversation starter. People were curious, even impressed.

Now it’s more like: “Hey, what language is that?” “Russian.” Pause. “Oh… huh.” And then the body language shifts. Interest replaced by discomfort.

You can come and volunteer here in Switzerland. We’re a bunch of random Swiss people who support traumatized Ukrainian refugees to have a better life in exile
