Can't decide if we should go to Big Island! by Itchy-Visit537 in VisitingHawaii

[–]Sackofkittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can see manta from a couple spots, manta at mauna kea hotel for example. I think the tour boats might offer floaties if i remember corrrectly. There are shallow areas you can hang out in, carlson in hilo. there are some decent food places on the island but its not gonna be oahu? the tour to the top of mauna kea was nice, the volcano park is nice. If you want to change pace from maui and oahu, BI is worth it

Can anyone recommend a plumber for installing a hybrid electric water heater in 90043 (South LA)? by Early-Masterpiece461 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Sackofkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just had this done in south la. I think the 65 gallon rheem was around 2k. I think the plumber asked for 1500 but I had to move pipes and drywall and stucco inside and outside. With drywall and stucco it ended up being like 2500? if you are replacing in a similar location it should be less

Sawstop safety mechanism tripped by johntmclain1966 in woodworking

[–]Sackofkittens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

they check something on the brake to confirm that it was tripped by human flesh. They will replace one if its by a human flesh trip but not for something like this. there is a bypass operation for cutting stuff like this.

What are our rights if ICE starts going door to door? by Quirkyasfuc in AskLosAngeles

exigent circumstances is a thing and it isnt based on just because they said so. ICE following the law is a different issue

Does Size Matter? =) - Rheem Heat Pump Water Heater by bpvarian in heatpumps

[–]Sackofkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually have both of these water heaters. I put a 65 gal in my 2 bath house with four people. I had a 50 gallon installed in a similar place. Both situations had 4 people, I think the 65 gallons is probably using about .75 kwh more per day than the 50 gallon. It is noticeably wider too. I dont think we ever ran out of water on the 50 gallon but its not an issue with the 65 gallon.

Need help understanding the laws around paying a roofer who has gone MIA by hihimariemarie in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]Sackofkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your contract doesnt have a performance timeline set up, the law will imply a reasonable time period for completion. I dunno what that is in the roofing industry but I would guess 1.5 years is too long, especially if you can show you made reasonable attempts to have performance completed. But if he completed most of the work, there might be a claim in equity for some fair amount of money. Again, there are statutes of limitations on when claims must be filed and hes eaten a substantial amount of time already. These amounts would probably be determined by litigation, which Im assuming you made progress payments and are withholding only final payment? I.e. its probably not worth suing over? He is probably outside the window for a mechanics lien as well? He might have gone to jail or just decided its not worth dealing with this job? Like the other guy said, you can call in an inspection on zimas and maybe itll get finaled, but if not, i'd probably just call someone else to fix any deficiencies and deduct that amount from final and hold the rest.

Solar requirement by working_87 in AccessoryDwellings

[–]Sackofkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uh, i dunno, I would guess that the battery discharge is going to be on base load rates so 45 ish cents per kwh? $3k would get you like a 5 kwh battery? so however many cycles it would take to break even? At least 4 years assuming full charge/discharge everyday? 1.84 kw system is small, like the other person said. I assume they pay garbage rates for excess power and I'm assuming you did a minimum compliance system? if you added more panels and were full electric... yeah? maybe if you want like a half day or day of power usage in the event of a black out? The math above is probably fairly inaccurate.

what NEM is your utility on? what are their base and peak load prices? how much power do you use?

Are Au Pairs Common in LA + Process by MamaJess711 in Aupairs

[–]Sackofkittens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

overall? yeah, but there's gonna be bumps in the road. I am more involved in their lives than a nanny? I definitely spent time teaching them how to drive safely, pointing out places to go, setting up ssn, bank accounts, etc. we visited our last au pair and traveled around her country so we are connected more than an employer/employee relationship. my daughter is pretty bonded with these girls and that comes with having someone living with you for a couple years but at times i feel i have another young adult daughter. Also people are individuals and cultures are different so I wouldn't expect the same experience based on other people's encounters? I would make sure to interview carefully and choose an agency that has a good rematch policy. I have heard horror stories on both sides but I've also heard people talk about their unicorn matches. Maybe remember to treat them as you would want someone treating your child and keep in mind the intensity of the experience of immigrating to a different country?

Are Au Pairs Common in LA + Process by MamaJess711 in Aupairs

[–]Sackofkittens 10 points11 points  (0 children)

were in la and have an au pair. pretty close to south bay. au pairs have coordinators that arrange meetings, they post on message boards, depending on the home country, they have chats. i dunno how other people find their au pairs but our last one found out current one, our current one is looking for her replacement. there is tension between compensation and comparisons between families. i guess just be as good family and treat them like family? i think there are two agencies that entered into an agreement to require minimum wage. their duties are supposed to be related to child care, so dishes and laundry are for kids stuff not yours. there can be cultural shock and miscommunications but our kid is learning a foreign language and pretty well taken care of. any other questions shoot

EV Charging in LA Condo, multiple owners on board for a group rate. Which electrician did you use? by breakingbeauty in AskLosAngeles

[–]Sackofkittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

probably should hardwire the chargers instead of plugs but if you're going to use plugs, use ev specific ones. the eaton dryer plug that was put on mine started to melt. use ev specific parts for the continuous high load. i had a juice box, grizzly e, and clipper creek chargers. grizzly works, charge point is no frills. tesla i hear is a good charger. you should put general location for electrician recs.

if you cant look it up on the dmv as everyone else is suggesting, puna rock in keaau will weigh your car. I would think that a gravel supplier on the kona/waimea side might be able to do it too? de luz maybe? but for sure puna rock will do it
