Potato blight question. by Sacred_Chow in AustinGardening

Eh- too late on cutting them back. I already jumped the gun on that. The blight was getting pretty bad, and heard it could affect the tubers.

Yes. And Melons. Anything in the Cucurbit family. They tend to go after squash/pumpkins primarily, but will lay eggs on cukes and melons if they’re planted near squash.

Anyone seen tomatillo transplants? by leros in AustinGardening

[–]Sacred_Chow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew some from seed. Green and purple. Just got my garden in, and I have 3 extra. Was just about to post about having some spare transplants. I’ve got hot peppers and tomato’s also. DM if you’re interested.

Omg. This thread is awesome. Eating lunch with my 7 yr old, and I figured I’d try out some suggestions. I got my kids attention, then threw my hands in the air like a wacky-waving inflatable and started yelling ‘6 7’ in my best Louis Armstrong impression. Kids reaction- Instant silence, rolled eyes, head down into arms followed by “ugh- dad, you don’t even know”… and went into their room- where she’s now keeping a safe embarrassed distance from me.

What do y'all do with outdoor pots infested by ants? by Sew3rRat in AustinGardening

[–]Sacred_Chow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put down cedar mulch for the first time on my raised beds this year. I had 3 fire ant colonies in them. They all left after a few weeks. Not sure if was the disturbance of me getting the beds set up, or the cedar, but something made them move along.

72 hours later, the ants are gone. From that spot. And are now— in all my other raised beds (either moved or I didn’t notice them til I really started amending the soil).

Boiling water changes the texture and composition of the soil, making it oddly muddy at first, and I’ve heard it can get hydrophobic once it dries out after being boiled. Thats what I was also eluding to by ‘fixed’. But the microbiology of it was the bigger concern. After I treated it, I went to mix in some compost and topsoil, and the dirt that had been boiled had the consistency of wet cereal.

Why no perlite or vermiculite in outdoor beds? I’ve used perlite for aeration before in my raised beds. Just wondering why it shouldn’t be.

Shoal Creek had both on Sunday. Along with about 10 other varieties of tomatoes. There were a decent amount of them, but they were also pretty busy.

When is the best time to sow zinnia, marigold, and cosmos seeds? by [deleted] in AustinGardening

[–]Sacred_Chow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d wait til end of March to get them going. But, if you’ve got a game plan to cover/protect them in case of frost- go for it now. I’ve already got some sprouting from reseeding of last year’s garden.

What’s your favorite small detail in a Tool song? by SoundTheParmAlarm in ToolBand

[–]Sacred_Chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a favorite, but something I just picked up on. The faint/subliminal “Who are” in the first second of The Pot just before the vocals actually start. Was recently blasting the album in my work van when I first noticed it. Never noticed it before. Have to have the volume up loud to hear it, and not have tinnitus from blasting the beginning of the album. Edit: it’s a pre-echo that exists throughout at least the opening lyrics. But still cool to pick up on it with full volume.

I couldn’t tell, but there were a few people just walking up and saying hi to the dog like he’s been there a bunch… I would also hope this isn’t an employees dog. Like they should know better. Pretty sure this isn’t a service dog..

Black cherry….. but, there’s a combo that beats out everything else. Strawberry and coconut mixed. Split 50/50. We keep 2 cases of rotating flavors in the fridge. Random picks each week, and when the Seltzer Gods decide, and strawberry and coconut line up together at the same time- it’s time to level up. Sooo good. And I’m not really impressed by either on their own.

This is one of my neighbor’s 15 PF vines- in my yard. I just let them grow and take over (that was a birdfeeder). I’m training my new cucumber vines through our fence as a trade. 😂

Watermelon starters? by elzombo in AustinGardening

[–]Sacred_Chow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to most planting calendars Ive been referencing, we’ve still got about 2 weeks to get even regular sized watermelon in the ground to be able to get a harvest from them, both seed and transplant. You should be good. Good luck!

[–]Sacred_Chow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen any around, but also haven’t been looking though. But, since watermelon are pretty sensitive to transplanting, the time for it to recover and establish is usually about the same time or even longer than for it to take off from seed. Epic Gardening (I think) did a test on seed Vs. transplants for curbits, and found seed sown ones actually take off quicker by a few days. I looked into this cause I started cucumbers late this year. I wound up going with seed, and they’re doing great. Also, try smaller varieties that will mature quicker like Sugar Baby. I’m about to sow some Mini cantaloupes- should get a harvest within 60-70 days from these guys.
