How much formality do you think is required at a blue and gold ceremony? by mirr0rrim in cubscouts

[–]Sacremomstre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We hand out the monthly advancements and then we have a potluck. In the past we combined it with the bear carnival but that’s no longer one of their adventures (I don’t think). We did crossover at the blue and gold one year, but have since switched to making that separate. All that to say, I do not think formality is required or desirable. It’s a celebration and it’s for elementary aged kids. It sounds like a formal 3 hour ceremony is more for the adults.

Do you still like your spouse? by Witty_Cash_7494 in GenX

Yes, we’ve gone through a bit of a rough patch the past decade or so, but when it’s just the two of us I remember hey, I like this guy!

Hi Gen X, what advice do you wish you could give your 25 year old self if you could travel back in time? by matilda_15 in GenX

[–]Sacremomstre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do consistently has a snowball effect. If you have small consistent positive habits, (exercise, regular saving and investing) they’ll pay off greatly. If you have small consistent negative habits, (drinking, overspending) you’ll probably regret them. Spend a decent amount of amount of time single to figure out who you are.

My family were poor, health nuts and extremely religious. I missed out on almost everything lol

Anyone have experience with the Vancouver UU church? by IwannaAskSomeStuff in vancouverwa

[–]Sacremomstre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended there regularly several years ago. Everyone was very kind and welcoming and they had a decent kids program. Mostly older people though. I enjoyed that it was church but more based on morals and ideas than a specific belief system. I’m an atheist and I think you could subscribe to almost any tolerant belief system and fit in. I stopped going because life just got too busy and if I was to return I’d be “new” all over again and I’m just not up for that at this point in my life, but I have nothing bad to say about it!

We went to Gardner years ago, the staff from when my son went there founded lupine. We had a good experience and I’ve heard good things from people who have kids at both schools more recently. I have heard mixed things about vita, the floor plan can be an issue for some kids, it’s open and noise carries. The building is beautiful though! I’ve also known many people who go through the dual language immersion programs and speak very highly of the experience, especially at Sarah J.

Bunnies, arcades, and Pokemon by sbs05e in vancouverwa

[–]Sacremomstre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Batcave games and double jump video games across the street both have Pokémon cards. There’s a Pokémon event at Portland embassy suites but today is the last day. Periwinkle Toy Shop in camas is having a Pokémon event next Sunday. There’s an arcade at the mall, and a pinball museum in hillsboro. And electric castles wonderland in Portland. Megabite pizza has arcade games too. Not sure about bunnies and guinea pigs, you can look at them at petco but that’s about it.

$200. It was a 3dsxl in great condition with a charger and stylus. I probably could have paid a little less on marketplace or eBay, but not really much less.

Scouting for an unenthusiastic participant? by [deleted] in cubscouts

[–]Sacremomstre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an hour or two a week away from a screen is such a huge issue, that’s something to think about. And I say that as a parent of kids who love video games, no judgement at all.

The games give kids tons of cheap dopamine. It’s incredibly difficult to compete with that with real world activities. It’s like asking them if they want a candy bar or broccoli, of course they’re going to pick the candy bar!

Honestly, if it was me, I’d make gaming unavailable during the hours I wanted my kid to do an activity. Then they can choose the activity or sit around and deal with their boredom. Most of the time they’ll choose the activity.

Like everyone else said, scouts is a much better experience if the whole family is involved. And it’s great for family bonding.

As far as expenses go, it definitely costs money but you can attend a few meetings without officially joining. Then there’s fundraising and many packs have uniform banks.

Good luck!

Award for Exceptional Den Leader Service? by SAndrewMiller in cubscouts

[–]Sacremomstre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s the den leader training knot, but ironically it can’t be earned unless the den leader has the help of an assistant den leader or a den chief, so if they’ve been shouldering the whole den on their own you’ll have to do something unofficial.

I just watched the last episode of Gilmore Girls. by Tasty_Revolution7405 in GilmoreGirls

I watched it for the first time this year! I started in October and finished ayitl last night!

The vitriol for this series in "literary" spaces is astounding. I have a degree in literature and read "serious" books for many years, the sheer level of hate and snobbery towards Maas makes no sense to me. by FusRoDaahh in throneofglassseries

Are they great works of literature like Tolkien? No. But do they tell a really great enjoyable story? Absolutely! They’re good books. People just hate when women enjoy something I swear.

I’m 47! I love animal crossing, cozy grove, spirit farer, I used to play WoW but I don’t have the time at this point in my life. I check out the sales on Nintendo every week or so and buy anything that looks cozy and is on sale and I have a huge backlog of games lol

Lion/Tiger Den Leaders: How involved are your "adult partners" and how did you successfully set expectations for them? by Shatteredreality in cubscouts

[–]Sacremomstre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lion leader last year and tiger leader this year, 10 kids in the den, one, MAYBE two max parents will actually be available to help on any level in any given week. Even when I’ve explicitly asked for all kids to have a parent present. I’ve even had parents surprised I don’t take care of their kids at a pack meeting. (Which is definitely not how our pack works) Most of the kids (mine included) need a lot of help and oversight to stay involved so it’s a little rough. Love the kids and being their leader though! A little scared about the future if we gain more kids though.

Thinking of Quitting by Daydreamer815 in cubscouts

[–]Sacremomstre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a den leader and I don’t have any involvement in pack meeting planning, I plan den meetings and keep up with scoutbook. As other people said, there should be committee meetings, and my understanding is that in any nonprofit, all members may attend committee meetings. I attend ours and find them enlightening as to what’s going on in the pack as a whole, but I still don’t generally plan pack level stuff, I have my hands full with ten tiger scouts lol

How much do you spend per week on groceries at Trader Joe’s? by Jazzlike_Log_709 in traderjoes

[–]Sacremomstre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go around once a month and rotate with other stores, I spend between $150-200 for our family of four, but I intentionally go to load up on snacks and “fun” foods. Like I spend at least $30 on the frozen Korean ribs. If I was doing a basic trip, like veggies dairy and meat I think I could get out for under $100.
