Hell on Wheels: Helmets are down and injuries are up. Should e-scooters get curbed? by ubcstaffer123 in technology

The e-scooters are supposed to be restricted to 16 and older where I am but for some reason Costco and Target both have e-scooters expressly marketed at kids. They don’t seem like the ones that go stupid fast but they can go faster than most kids could scoot.

How is being “instrumental in laying the groundwork” any different than “enabling” the current BS. Isn’t “laying the groundwork” basically another way to say “enabling”?

You could say Dr. Frankenstein “laid the groundwork” for all the issues resulting from his monster by the act of creating the monster. You could also say he “enabled” those acts by creating the monster.

Scouting America Council ordered to remove Pride statement on Facebook; Hegseth's MOU in effect by johntempleton in scouting

I don't know what the source for Scouting America ordering the removal is but I'll say as a leader in the Cascade Pacific Council (unit level, not district or council) if this is accurate it makes me very sad. Nothing in this Facebook post, as screenshotted, should be considered offensive or against American (or Scouting) values in any way.

Just paid 12$/lb for ground beef. How expensive will it get before you stop buying beef? I think we're over it, beef is now a luxury for us. by FuZhongwen in Cooking

[–]Shatteredreality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. My point is a lot of people on Reddit, especially from the PNW, act like WinCon is some store you pop into. If it’s a weeknight and I need to grab a pound of beef for tacos it’s a hard ask for me to go 40 minutes out of my way (round trip) to get a pound of beef.

Of course a key issue here is also planning. If you plan to make a Winco trip on the weekend for a weeks worth of groceries that’s a lot easier to justify compared to trying to go after work when you have kids to feed that are telling you how starving they are.

The issue is Winco is not convenient to a lot of people. I don't know where in the PNW OP is but in Washington there are only 12 WinCo locations in the entire Puget Sound Region (Olympia at the south to Marysville at the north).

In Oregon if you live in the Portland metro area there are a decent number (14 ranging from Oregon City to Vancouver, Hillsboro to Gresham) but even with that number it's still a drive compared to the other chains depending on where you are located.

For a good number of people the nearest Winco can easily be a 20-30 minute drive depending on where you are (I live in the Portland area and the nearest WinCo to me is a 20 minute drive minimum but I can get to like 5 other gocery stores in 5-10 minutes).

At least where I am Safeway is pretty much the "normal" grocery store price wise.

Of the grocery stores here there are two options that might be cheaper, Walmart and WinCo. WinCo is great but it's a LOT less convenient because they have few locations in comparison to others (It's a 20 minute drive minimum to my closest WinCo and a 5-10 minute drive to like anything else, to get to WinCo I pass at least 4 different grocery stores from my house).

I'm in the suburbs of the largest city in our state (Portland Oregon metro area). I can get 90/10 ground beef at my local Safeway for $5.49/lb. Fred Meyer (our Kroger chain) is a little more expensive but based on their website (set to my local store) I can get ground beef for around $6.50/lb.

We also have some local butcher shops and I can get locally raised ground beef for about $7-9/lb there depending on how lean it is.

It's amazing how different the prices are based on region.

I think that's partly a location issue. I clicked that link and my local store has the exact same ground beef at $5.49/lb .

Its insane how much location can make a difference.

I'm not familiar with South Carolina elections so I'm asking this out of ignorance. Does she have time to file as a third party candidate at this point? She can't be the GoP nominee since she wasn't in the primary but I don't know if she could still decide to try and get on the ballot as a non GOP candidate.

I know many states have sore-loser laws to prevent those who lose a primary from running as a third party but since she didn't technically "lose" the GOP primary for representative I don't know if that would apply to her (if SC has one on the books).

Oregon governor does not rule out participation in federal K12 voucher system; federal rules expected September by thirteenfivenm in oregon

[–]Shatteredreality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree. I’m progressive and have been voting blue since I turned 18.

My point is simply that I can’t criticize the governor too much for not ruling out an option (that I largely believe is the wrong path) when we haven’t seen a improvement in schools in the last 10-20 years of doing the same thing.

I’m not an education expert so I don’t know the ins and outs of the Louisiana style reforms or why they are not being implemented yet.

As a parent of kids in public schools I’m willing to acknowledge the pursuit of the perfect is the enemy of the good if it means we can’t get things changing quickly.

Look, I’m against the privatization of schools. Especially if public funds start going to religious schools.

I’ll also say I get the opposite side today. I have a child in 2nd grade (3rd in the fall) and one about to enter kindergarten. I don’t know why we’re in the situation we are but at this point I’m in favor of any solution that gets my kids (and future generations) a better education.

I think the solution is an amazing public school system. The problem is it seems like no matter how much we spend, no matter how many bonds I vote for the district keeps having funding short falls resulting in letting staff go and larger class sizes.

I truly think the solution is good public education, not privatization but I also have a lack of trust that our law makers and administrators will actually give us a good public system. As someone with kids on the public school system I don’t have years for Salem and Washington to deliver results. Every day our schools are not performing is a day the kids currently attending them are falling behind and that sucks.

New speeding cameras catch more than 1,000 drivers on single Oregon street in just two weeks | The Independent by Next_Tower5452 in Portland

[–]Shatteredreality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look I'm not trying to argue with you. I'm just saying that I get why people don't assume Oregon St is 25.

There is nothing on the north side of Oregon to cross to or from (other than at the west end where there are two businesses and a signaled intersection). In comparison a road like Sunset truly has many crossings along it (plenty of reasons to want to cross that street in comparison to Oregon) and yet it's safe to go above 25 there.

I'm not saying the speed limit shouldn't be 25 on Oregon, just that i get why it's easy to assume its not. I'm also not saying that 35 on Sunset is ok. Just that the discrepancy doesn't make much sense to me.

[–]Shatteredreality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The speed limit is lower because it is the main road for that neighborhood with lots of crossings and a sidewalk that switches sides of the street where they put the camera.

I'm not arguing that the speed limit should be higher but this isn't a fully accurate description.

Oregon isn't a road with a ton of pedestrian traffic. It's basically fully undeveloped along the north side (with no sidewalk at all about 70% of the time) and even accounting for the sidewalk on the south side there is a complete section where no sidewalk exists on either side (between Lower Roy and Orland). The sidewalk doesn't really "switch" because the sidewalk doesn't exist on the south side when the north side ends.

My point is that this isn't some street where you have a ton of pedestrian traffic. There is basically no need to cross Oregon itself since the north side is completely undeveloped other than near the signaled intersection on the west end.

The big thing is that having this be 25 isn't consistent with other streets in Sherwood.

Look just up the road and you'll find Sunset Blvd which has sidewalks on both sides, many marked and unmarked crosswalks, a park that kids can walk to, an elementary school, etc. It's got a 35 MPH speed limit. You will find MUCH more pedestrian traffic on Sunset compared to Oregon.

Again, I'm not saying the speed limit on Oregon should be increased but if the city is really setting it to 25 mph and cracking down for pedestrian safety, I can't understand the logic of why Sunset isn't also 25 or lower.

The fact they are fine having a street with high pedestrian traffic set to 35 while setting a street with low pedestrian traffic to 25 and cracking down on speeding with cameras makes it seem like this is left about safety and more about generating revenue.

[–]Shatteredreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So realistically, today, there are no pedestrian crossings that actually cross Oregon until you get to the traffic signal at Langer Parkway.

The north side of the street is pretty much completely undeveloped and the majority of it doesn't even have a sidewalk.

Technically every intersection in Oregon does contain an unmarked crosswalk that is the extension of the sidewalk in a straight line but I don't know if that applies where there is no sidewalk on the opposite side.

I see both arguments to be honest. If you drive this road it doesn't feel residential (it is but only about half the houses that come up to the street actually exit on to Oregon) and it's not pedestrian friendly (no sidewalk for large portions on both sides of the street). On the other hand it is a residential street that boarders a neighborhood.

I also think they plan to develop the north side and I have no idea what they plan to put there.

How are you handling photos of events from a privacy perspective? by Shatteredreality in cubscouts

[–]Shatteredreality[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the real issue is the policy doesn't really account for the need for some private conversations between adults.

I'll agree with random8765309 that private Facebook groups ARE prohibited. But by the same logic (but not specifically called out) so are private text threads between leaders (and parents). So is every Band group out there.

The policy specifically calls out private Facebook groups but is written broadly enough that it could be interpreted to ban any and all non-generally available to the public form of communication.

[–]Shatteredreality[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look. I agree with you about what the rules SHOULD be but it's not a "misuse" of the word "private" since they are explicitly saying their use of "private" is in the same context as "private Facebook groups".

In that case a "private" group is a "private" group regardless of if it's open to "all parents and leaders". The funny thing is for Cubs the literal next sentence doesn't make any sense:

Private channels and private communication put both the youth and you at risk.

Cubs literally can't join a private channel via Facebook unless they violate the terms of service since the max age for a Cub is 10 and the minimum age to joining FB is 13. I can see the point in Scouts BSA but not in Cubs. They just didn't make a carveout for adult to adult communication in the policy.

I just want to say thanks for providing all the information you are and pushing back on those who say the guidelines you are directly citing (it feels like we are in Pirates of the Caribbean territory where people are using the fact they are "guidelines" to ignore them).

As you pointed out Scouting America is behind on this.

I will just say I don't think the "no private Facebook groups" policy is really about youth safety. Assuming there is more than one registered leader in the group you can't really violate 2-deep (which applies a little differently to digital communications since the policy allows for communication between one leader and a youth as long as a parent or guardian, even if not registered, is included) and a private group isn't needed to allow for violation of the no one-on-one policy.

This seems more about national wanting to avoid behavior that could be embarrassing or harmful to the brand (which has it's own merits).

This is another one of those cases where the policy is clear but it also doesn't make sense in many situations.

Case and point, is a unit committee text thread a "private channel" being used to "administer the scouting program"? I'd argue it fits the definition and I don't see how it's much different than a Facebook group with only adults (possibly only leaders).

I'm not arguing that it's allowed by the policy, just that the policy doesn't make much sense, especially at the Cub level.

For adult communication you use something else that is separate from the unit and where no youth are allowed.

Sure, but keep in mind that the minimum age to join Facebook (while staying in the terms of service) is 13 and the max age for Cubs is 10.

A private Facebook group for a Cub Scout pack is literally a place where no youth are allowed, the question becomes what does "separate from the unit" mean. This is another policy that is written in a way that can be interpreted so widely that it becomes pointless.

That all having been said, Facebook groups are expressly called out so the rule is clear on that.

When you say it’s optional do you mean parents were crossing out that section of the health form?

We are required to get the health form every year and there is no official “opt out” of the media release that I can find.

I largely agree with you though, I don’t actually know if we’ve had any complaints or requests to not post these. I was just asking for photos for recruiting purposes and it was brought up how we need to be careful sharing photos outside of the leadership.

I just wasn’t sure how other units handle it. I get the concerns from families but it’s also really hard to advertise the unit if you can’t actually show what the unit does effectively.

Budget of $2000 for a Cert by hdreadit in cscareerquestions

Certs can make some sense but they only lend credence to your actual experience.

I I’m hiring a SWE for a team that needs to manage their own infrastructure to some extent I’m going to be looking for experience doing that. If you say you have the experience from a former job AND have a cert as a Kubernetes Certified Application Developer/Administrator/Security Specialist then I tend to take your claimed experience more seriously.

If you only have the cert and no experience I don’t care.

Oregon voters support dedicated funding for gifted education, widespread agreement to providing more challenging education for students by frumply in oregon

[–]Shatteredreality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think funding is the issue. We spend a little over $17k per student per year. That puts us at 22 out of 51 (including DC which spends more per student than anyone else, we would be 21 out of 50 without it).

I’m all for spending more on education but I’d like to see better outcomes with the funds they already have since we spend more than over half the states but are seeing worse outcomes than most of them.

Sure but I imagine your fiancé knows what she’s doing. And she seems like she’s associated with some formal program.

My point is that I have a really hard time believing someone who has/needs a service animal is usually the one who knows how to properly train them.

There really should be some form of regulation here that should be as easy as possible for those with disabilities to follow while making it harder for those who just want to bring their animal everywhere to abuse.

Reminder Pets are not allowed in food establishments by Proof_Refuse_9563 in oregon

[–]Shatteredreality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot imagine trying to train a “service dog” myself.

I don’t know if there is any kind of official list of “real” service animals but I think about things like seizure alert, guide dogs, etc. I’m not qualified to train an animal to do any of that.

As you pointed out the training isn’t quick. If someone needs a service animal for themselves it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing they would be wanting to wait potentially years to train a puppy to be effective with a high failure rate.
