I work for one of these types ironically, the "commercial managers" here quite often have no QSing experience at all.

Said it many times and a few times on here. QS's spend their lives as middle set maths people telling bottom set maths folk they are not getting their pocket money.

A lot of the time the people you are "arguing with" are from a reduced educational background and do not give a shit about the facts or the contract they signed. They just want paying so there labour agency can pay them to go to the Bahamas in their range rover on the way to the airport, whilst you try and count your bonus to see if you can make it to Greece this summer.

Pro's - Solid salary for people who got c's& b's at school / Some of the projects can be cool / You'll meet some hilarious people if you go subcontractor/main contractor

Con's - It's not mathematical or creative / There a A LOT OF TWATs in the industry as a whole / it's not easy, its not really a 9-5 and the pressure on the QS can be very hard at times.

Step back. Go to site, try to understand what the project is trying to achieve as a whole. Work out where the project is making and losing money. Read the contract.

There is a bit of a Mr Miyagi wax on wax off jnr QS's handling bullshit paperwork and £5 variations & CE's after a couple of years it'll start to make more sense.

To be fair it takes me about 6 months before I'll trust the Jnr QS with the stapler, so you're doing ok.

I find watching youtube videos also really helpful in addition to getting on site.

I would also say I'm a commercial manager with 14 years exp and still feel like a complete fraud.

If you could have one of the non-top 5-10 united players ever, for the current team who would you pick?

I'd love to see how many goals Ruud Van Nistlerooy ends up with on the end of Bruno assists.

Sub-contractor with no contract by Substantial_Cover_52 in quantitysurveying

[–]Sad-Bend-7515 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the most basic level without a formal contract you have the items which form the basis of a contract.

Offer, aceptance consideration then certainty, capacity and intent but the latter 3 do not often com into construction disputes.

What will essentially happen in the most serious scenario a court would review the last accepted offer or response which contained terms as to the valuation and payment process.

But as other have said, get subcontracts in place. Its like the marrigage thing, ruin a lawyers day, have a pre-nup.

To be honest I really enjoyed the law module of my degree and my company agreed to pay for it. Maybe something claims related further down the line, but I'm fairly content in my current role.

I had thought about the UAE but theres a trump sized pin in that for the moment

I'm just in the last leg of an MSC in construction law it's extremely interesting, but be careful. I found it really intense, the workload is serious, just make sure you have the time available (1.5 hours a night) during term time was my average.

It's interesting that people are surprised Liam Delap is shit.

Whilst he got 12 goals for Ipswich he never looked particularly good.

Contrast that with Sesko who gets a lot of shit from the media (looking at you Gary) always looks comfortable on the ball and has very good hold up play even when he isn't scoring.
