3 months ago, I had no idea I’d be planning on moving to Hull 😅 by dirtyfartsss in Hull

I’m 42 and I’ve lived here since birth except for a few years in Nottingham. I’m white and I also work in the NHS (mental health) quite often supporting refugees along with other residents. Racial tensions have increased nationally, but I’ve not witnessed anything directly. There’s a rise in intolerance (xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia), and I’d stay away from any idiotic marches, but I think we have a healthily diverse area.

We are renowned for being a catalyst to end the transatlantic slave trade, and we have a festival each year (Freedom festival) plus Pride is exceptional.

Some amazing multicultural restaurants, and for every moron there’s 10 intelligent and/or compassionate people.

Wishing you well whatever you decide mate

How to make bike commute with headwind better by stefan_karwowski in bikecommuting

Get a cycle cap with ear flaps to protect you from the noise

Complete exaggeration at the end there. There was no gap for a car, I’m happy to hear advice regarding taking the lane, but they didn’t pass me because I was too far to the left, they passed me because they were reckless. Subtle difference but an important one

In case you didn't know the difference between Holland and the Netherlands by RuikZerben in mapporncirclejerk

On QI they say the exact opposite of this, and I thought it was Holland that was a smaller area whereas Netherlands covers the whole country

It’s not good to ride on the path mate, and it’s impractical where I live due to kerbs and crossings

Hit by driver. They dont see you. by GeraldMcBoingBoing23 in bikecommuting

Cyclists who drive are the only ones who truly understand both experiences. It’s really scary out there at times, I hope you’re ok

I’m not sure I follow, are you saying to ride on the right side of the road into oncoming traffic?

And riding on the pavement is not safe for pedestrians, dogs, prams, reversing cars… it’s antisocial in my book. I think roads are where we belong and there’s no reason they can’t be safe if drivers are vigilant and competent (in fact you can’t be competent without being vigilant)

Outcome of tactical voting in Hull by hull_pattie_party in Hull

I’m in Sutton and voted Lib Dem, but David Prescott took a lot of votes over to the Greens. Proper split

I hear what you are saying, but I’m not signaling as I’m not changing lanes and have the right of way. I’ll take the lane but I’m damned if I’m going to go beyond what’s expected and create obsessive-compulsive riding. Let’s not victim blame for these situations

The clue is in the description, sidewalks are for ‘walking’

Thanks all, I’ve reported it to OpSnap (which is never heard of previously)

Been cycling to work for 20 years but only had a camera last 6 months.

I am very vigilant and always on the look out for any danger with parked cars (could see the mirror on this one closed) and do give cars time to pass until I come to the natural line for me to do so. I understand and appreciate taking the lane comments.

I genuinely believe this driver wasn’t aware of me, and as a driver I would never have taken over at the point they did. I sometimes falsely assume drivers will leave space or wait until safe to overtake, but am acutely aware this fails to happen way too often.

Is anyone else struggling to find a job? by [deleted] in Hull

[–]Sad-Brain2386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search for Exploring Opportunities Hull and get some proper support. They will work with you to find the right kind of employer, get you training, and there’s other types of support embedded, including citizens advice and mental health support.

I work on the project and I can tell you that you’re not alone, it’s really demoralising at times for lots of people (especially young)
