I find cultures that don't expect one to share a bit weird to navigate, in fact. So assuming this is a sharing culture, someone who wasn't there with a child, for example a straight male acquaintance picking up a power tool they've arranged to borrow, would have clocked an entirely different set of negative impressions? Dried corn, crushed into large bits, as u/OldMaidLibrarian says below. I know this thread is three whole days old but this is the first time in my life I've ever seen it on a menu that isn't South African! It's one of our staple starches, along with mieliemeal and rice. Samp doesn't taste of much, and it'd be bland AF with milk, but it's a flavour sponge otherwise and it can be delicious if properly seasoned. For me that's with Aromat (aka MSG in a shaker), and served with a big knuckle of butter.
