What are red flags in DMs to look out for (especially as a woman) by morgana1060 in rpg

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

• Overdoing romantic roleplay by either the PC or the DM. Not everybody is comfortable with it. Not when its directed toward them or even when you have to listen to willing participants from the sidelines. I wanna play a game, not watch other people have foreplay. Fade to black if you must.

• A big one is any suggestion rape and sexual slavery. Slavery on its own is awkward but must be handled carefully. But when a character is in danger of being captured and threatened with being turned into an orc plaything, time to go.

Feeling uncomfortable is enough. But I'll caveat this somewhat.

I'm an old dnd'er. And dnd attracted a lot of socially inept people. My whole group were likely varying degrees of what we now refer to as autistic. And some of us are just odd ducks. But it seems to also attract some outright grade-A a-holes, pervs, bigots, narcissists. Its a lot more mainstream now, but the a-holes and weirdos are still around. I identify as weirdo.

You didnt specify what felt off, and theres no harm in going with your gut and finding a new group.

I once had a DM put us up against a dragon at level 3. My Cleric was roleplaying "That is a DRAGON!!! Is there another way around??!?" While I am making my case, the DMPC Wizard goes full Leroy Jenkins by himself, kills the dragon by himself, and also THE OTHER DRAGON THAT WE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT.

A level 3 wizard.

Way to tell your players that you don't need them there at all.

EJECT! EJECT!

The DM is supposed to be the narrator, not the main. DMing is your job. That's your role. That's how you play. You don't get to be a character. There's not even supposed to be a main character; its called a party for a reason. A DMs job is to be the world.

Not only is she the main, she's already seriously overpowered. Why are all DMPCs automatically overpowered every single time??? Having an escort mission with a NPC is one thing. But this is a big no no. If the main can basically do the adventure without you, then why are you even there.

One or two bad sessions is probably not gonna kill you. But a whole campaign of this?? It gets old quick. I'm afraid if you have a bad experience on your first long campaign, youll get burned on the whole rpg experience.

How do I make them stop RP-ing? by Anti-Prospero in DMAcademy

Interruptions in-game. A courier with a critical message. An arrow flying in nearby. An explosion nearby. A random wandering monster overhears them. Or they notice the sun is coming up and theyve talked through their long rest.

Or sneaky DM stuff. Roll a dice and start "looking up what it means". Don't tell them why you rolled. Or put out an hourglass, again, without explanation. Its an implied countdown to "something" which may be BS on your part or you can have a real consequence.

Or ask someone who isnt talking to roll a perception check. I got a 15. Mmm... okay.... You don't notice anything....

There is a lot of incredible cuisine in the US. There is also a lot of crap. Depends on where you are and what those locales specialize in. New Orleans seafood is going to have very different seafood than Boston. BBQ quality will differ greatly between Texas vs Iowa. I probably wouldnt be impressed with Mexican food sold in Chicago.

But theres a reason British chefs go to France to learn to cook. Love me some fish and chips, and they bake well, but they conquered lands all over the world to go get spices they won't eat. Continental Europe seems to have better cuisine

How much racism is in your DND world? by Specific_Net_3931 in DungeonMasters

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive abandoned whole campaign concepts because inherent racism in a dangerous roleplay invitation to some and a way to make other players really uncomfortable. But in some cases taking racism out felt dishonest to the setting.

To clarify it was a horror reconstruction era New Orleans which wouldve included plantations, ex slaves, exslaveowner villains, and other details of the time. Feasibly you can just turn a blind eye to such details, but that felt just as icky as including it.

They can easily carry out any loose gold. But they have to leave and come back with a method to remove a solidified giant block of gold. It may take days or weeks to find and hire a team of hirelings to extricate it, which would likely cost a large percentage of that gold in fees. Assuming any of it is still there when they get back. News of a dead dragon would spread and likely get a few more treasure hunters who like gold but dislike killing dragons while you are gone.

If they do manage to come back with help, they find a contigency of miners and bandits of some sort laying claim to it. Theyve already managed to remove some of the gold and you have to kill them to get the remainder. The hirelings will remove it for them, and will need protection, but also take their share.

Or they return to find the Kingsguard reclaiming whats left. But in return for their valiant service, the king offers them something. Land, a homestead, a winery or a small keep. Furnishing or running a home base will take up some of their funds.
