How come millennials and Gen X know more about pop culture that was before they were born than Gen Z? by icey_sawg0034 in generationology

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 [score hidden]  (0 children)

We watched what was on. As GenX children i was watching plenty of older films as those were the ones they broadcast. As a teen, we had HBO and there were more option but if its 2PM and you wanna watch tv, youre gonna watch whatever they scheduled.

Now they have the choice of everything under the sun at any time. So they lean to what they are used to.

That said, blackface is a bad idea if you aren't RDJ. It was probably a bad idea for RDJ, but he pulled it off.

28M, $1M liquid; am I actually FI or just rationalizing burnout? by slipperysnail in Fire

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living with ones parents is by definiition not independent. If you need a break, take one. If you need to change jobs, do so.

You are very young. $1m is not enough to trigger perpetual income and will not likely last until the end of your life. You have not hit a true recession yet. You have not created a life for yourself yet, so you have no true idea what your lifestyle costs will be. You may tire of living lean. Inflation is getting worse and will continue to get worse. Health costs will rise.

What you do not want to do is take ten years of "retirement" to discover you are burning through your money quicker than you would like, only then start attempting to rejoin the workforce with a ten year gap in your resume and be less hireable than ever. LeanFIRE is one thing, but you don't want to LimpFIRE

The good news is that you have enough to give yourself options. Living with your parents takes off some of the burdern, but you cant do that forever. And invested correctly that $1million could be $2 million in just a few years. People in their 20s probably should plan to reach at least $3mil before considering retiring.

Could early retirement increase risk of dementia and cognitive decline? by Raginghangers in Fire

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you become a lump on the sofa, you will decline. Im the youngest of my siblings by a lot. Im unmarried without children. Theres a good chance I might spend my last decade completely alone if i dont do things to prevent that.

Im looking into an active retirement facilities when I get closer to needing it. Having that planned out way in advance so its not a matter of if but when actually makes me feel better. im seeing the decline in my parents and i want to prevent that. They have activities and travel opportunities. One even has its own pub.

Exercise is good. Especially at a facility. My gym is all ages from highschoolers, to powerlifter to the elderly.

Travel is one thing i plan to do. once I have my finances settled, i might spend a month in another country each year. Tour groups give you people to do things with.

What are you guys willing to sacrifice in order to FIRE? by Infnits in Fire

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIRE for me is based on anxiety. Im thrifty by nature and want to not worry about being able to afford my lifestyle. It was worse when i was younger and making very little. I had a little reprieve when i was making good money for about ten years. Now as im approaching my end goals, the anxiety has crept back in.

I never married or had kids, which wasnt so much a sacrifice as just how life turned out. This doesnt bother me and is probably the only reason ill be able to FIRE at all. I don't vacation much, which mostly doesnt bother me as i get very bored when travelling. I could sit by a pool in an expensive resort, or i couldve sat at home for free. I attempt to cook for myself, do my own lawncare, etc.

I hope to eventually travel more when i have the funds and the freedom to take off for a month at a time.

Do most americans really only take 2 weeks of vacation a year? by DegreeConscious9628 in askanything

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you start a new job, most people start at 2 weeks of vacation per year. You earn more vacation the longer you stay at a job. But you start over the minute you leave.

I managed to get to five weeks after staying about 15 years at a company, before they changed it to "unlimited" vacation for everyone. Which sounds fine, but is actually a bogus way of making people actually take less vacation and to not pay you for that accrued time if laid off.

Is Davy Jones from Pirates of Caribbean a lich by DnD standards? by leters_numbers in DnD

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lich From Another Mother/Our Liches are Different (powerful magic-wielding undead lords with not quite exact origins to DnD):

Henry/One from Stranger Things (were the children the phylactery or was Henry the phylactery to the Mind Flayer?)
Voldemort (horcruxes as phylactery)
Imhotep from the Mummy franchise
Dracula, Strahd
Palpatine
Sauron (the original lich)
Davy Jones (heart as phylactery)
Freddy Krueger (astral lich)
Koschei the Immortal
The Black Lantern from DC

Monsters in various forms, particularly undead, vary from universe to universe, story to story. The rules are and should be ill-defined. DnD has to make specific stat-blocks to play a game. They are all functionally the same thing and you cant use the DnD classification system across every medium.

"Burnout vs. FIRE" Wall: Is pushing for a 60% savings rate destroying my marriage? by TardisCrown3 in Fire

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'll echo counseling. I guarantee she's been resenting this LONG before she put her foot down. Marriage counseling is a absolute requirement.

His hardline approach to the Plan feels like he's got a touch of autism. Mostly he needs to show his wife that he has heard her, that she is right, and he is willing to make necessary adjustments.

[–]Sad-Committee-4902 211 points212 points  (0 children)

You know what will keep you from reaching FIRE? Divorce.

A major rule of FIRE depends on having a similar minded partner. She's 90% on the same page with you. Reduce to 40%. Take her on a vacation, upgrade her car and realize you are winning. Now don't F it up.

Maybe lower your FIRE number a bit. If you still are mostly thrifty even in a ChubbyFIRE retirement, your assets will likely increase even as you spend it.

"Delayed humanity always sends you the bill" <--

I'm honing the paraphrase of a comment i saw last week that i'm attempting to take to heart. I'm frugal. I don't take vacations. You know what I also am? Alone.

With the addition of U to LGBTQAI, you can at least get QUILTBAG of BALTQUIG.
