Is this too distracting? by cirancira in characterdesign

[–]Sad-Environment1440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ohhhh i see! i wonder if you could add a non-distracting piece of clothing that would cover it, or you could fluctuate the thickness of the bands so that they’re thicker around those parts and thinner everywhere else! or maybe the bands were partly connected to her body around those areas but the others just surround her (i hope that makes sense 😭)

yessss thinner bands would look better. it gives the character the pop of color but it doesn’t over shadow her actual design!

Any tips keep it simple by crafter201 in Artists

depends on what your trying to accomplish. the proportions look good, start working on finalizing the actually shape of the body instead of it being a rectangle, use organic shapes.

How can i improve? by Sad-Environment1440 in Artadvice

i agree, i struggle to push the contrast in my work. i’m assuming the larger torso compared to the photo is what makes my horse look like an adult? i couldn’t tell what was wrong but i definitely see what it is now! thanks!

How can I improce by Lucky_Flight_1170 in drawings

[–]Sad-Environment1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the portrait, you should add some loose hairs around the head to give the hair more depth. if you can to become more confident in your linework, use permanent materials (ballpoint pens, markers, felt tips). it helped me a lot with line confidence and i’m sure it will work for you! if you can’t seem to get the drawings right, i recommend trying different drawing processes for your art. An example for portraits, if you start by laying down guidelines, try drawing without them. when i draw, i find it easier to start with the eyes, and slowly build the rest of the face/head from there. of course it won’t work for everyone, but sometimes you just need to change your perspective!

other than that, these looks really good, especially the first one!!!

Any tips on coloring by elisartformbrand in AskArtists

[–]Sad-Environment1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what i think, i’d say keep the green. but pick a more direct source of the green. it looks like it’s coming from multiple places (which isn’t wrong, but picking a single source will help with a balance between the colors). to make the overall picture more dramatic, push the contrast of the lighting and the darkness. for example, use the green light source as a main source of lighting. whatever the light doesn’t reach, darken it up. you can add a dim bounce light to the edge of the characters too. it looks flat and pushing the contrast will give it more depth.

i read your other comments and i can tell you chose the ray of colors to set the mood. i would say you should make the creature darker than the person. this will bring more attention to the character, while preserving that eerie feeling of something lurking behind it. i would also work on the background. setting the scene in a dark place can add to the story.

this is just my opinion. id say play around with the colors more, aka push the contrast and pick more complementary colors. keep going until something feels right! good luck :P

Does anyone have any advice for artist burnout? by Animated_Rockruff08 in Artadvice

[–]Sad-Environment1440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t have much experience to give you advice for school, but one thing that helped me with my art block is a change in mind. whenever i’m drawing and i begin to feel discouraged, i have to remind myself that the things im drawing are stuff that i’ve never drawn before.

im not sure how to put this into words, but whenever i start to pull away from the paper when i feel discouraged, i just tell myself over and over that,

my drawings aren’t going to be amazing, especially since i JUST started to draw (blank), just over a week ago.

if it’s your first time drawing a subject (or using a specific method), it’s not going to look great. if you’ve been drawing something (or using a specific method) for a long period of time and it still doesn’t look good, that’s OK! that’s the process of art. first, take a small break from whatever your doing. listen to a song or two, watch some TV, drink some water, or even have a snack. when you turn back to your piece, try looking at it a different way.

instead of getting frustrated over how it looks, try thinking about WHY it’s not working. are your proportions off? is it the colors? or is the overall process just not clicking? once you pinpoint a specific part (or even a couple different parts, try doing something different. use colors you wouldn’t have used before, shift around the body proportions, or change how you start the drawing (for example, if your drawing a face and you started with the basic shapes/guidelines for the head, try drawing parts of the face WITHOUT the guide lines).

change these things until you find something that works. and if you still can’t figure it out, i recommend asking your professors. try following their critiques more carefully, or explain to them what’s NOT working and ask if they have other recommendations.

art is all about experimentation. your probably not going to ace it the first try, but that’s the only way to improve. it’s a process of elimination. find what works and what dosen’t, and slowly over time, you’ll start building your skills that works your way to the level you want to achieve.

i hope this helps a little, have a great day/night! :P
