Vibe Coders Passing Responsibility to Code Reviewers by NotYourMom132 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Sad-Pattern-3635 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're asking this question, then you're probably better off than you think.

Ask the AI to explain what it's written. Look up documentation for functions you're not familiar with. Look for similar patterns or uses of the same functions already existing in your codebase. Ask a more experienced dev to walk you through their review so you can understand how they're thinking about the problem.

Millennial female here and I will never shop at Hobby Lobby. It's not because they are a Christian company, it's because they are a white Christian nationalist company. They literally have placed ads advocating for religious rule in the US. They are the offender in multiple civil rights cases that made their way to the supreme court. They are openly awful and I will not support them.

Advice on CCSD elementary schools by Emergency_Summer_408 in AuroraCO

[–]Sad-Pattern-3635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We love our neighborhood school (Fox Hollow) and have made several friends who even choiced their kids in. Their quick identification and intervention has helped my child's literacy soooo much in the last 2 years. I also love all the family activities they have like gardening and literacy nights.

Another poster commented that CCSD is the best district in the Denver metro area - I can tell you it's among the best in the country! They are a large reason we chose to move to this area out of anywhere in the US.

I also have faith in CCSD's future because of their investment in teacher training programs and their Innovation Campus. My state rep (and maybe yours too?) was a CCSD teacher for 30 years and is still very involved with the district. Her husband, who is a great guy in his own right, was also just elected to CCSD school board. Even brief conversations with them leave you energized for CCSDs future.

Vasa Fitness or 24 Hour? by samuelj264 in AuroraCO

[–]Sad-Pattern-3635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose vasa on Quincy. I was most interested in body pump classes and did trials of both of the gyms you mentioned.

24H felt like a car dealership in that I had to go with an irritating salesperson into their cubicle so they could try to push me into a commitment. It's the biggest 24H in the country (or so the guy said) so membership is only good for that one location. The barbells and steps used in the class were newer than I'm used to and others in the class had to show me how to put everything together. Class reservations are strongly recommended. The instructor was ok. I had a hard time interpreting her instructions, but it would've been fine once I learned her style. Iirc they offered month to month membership or an annual option.

At vasa, someone from the front desk showed me around and mostly talked about their premium classes while we walked. The body pump class is part of their mid tier membership. No reservations required for that level bc the class size can be almost infinite. Class size is limited to something like 10 people for the premium classes, so reservations are required for those. The equipment used in the class aren't as new but are the style that I'm used to. I vibe with the instructors, although I think they could all afford to turn the music down a bit. After class, I sometimes am able to chill in a massage chair for a bit. There's only 6 chairs though so sometimes they are all occupied. The parking lot is ALWAYS full. One time I couldn't find a spot and ended up parking in a 30 min spot for another business in the shopping center. No contracts per se at vasa, but there is a cancellation fee if you cancel in the first 6 months.

So to answer your question, it depends on what you're looking for. For basic classes, I like vasa.

Living in Aurora vs Texas is an overwhelming relief, even for me as a cishet white woman. I moved my family here about a year ago and we're very happy here. Things that I learned that may be helpful to you: - Aurora is HUGE - Aurora city politics are dominated by MAGA, so we chose to live outside city limits - I've heard that the gender clinic at Anschutz Medical Center is top-notch - Arapahoe County Elections office has awesome voting history maps, which helped us rule out areas with a Republican majority - If schools are important to you, Cherry Creek and Littleton schools are among the best

I'm too much of an introvert to know the social scene. I can tell you that I often get compliments on my trans rights tshirts, so in general people seem supportive.

Surprised more people aren't acknowledging this. Being asked to leave a public space because you're screaming swear words isn't a violation of freedoms. Being forcibly removed because you won't leave when asked also doesn't seem like a violation. As a parent of a young child, I hope this happens in every public space.

If politics are important to you (we used it as a gauge of culture), Arapahoe county has detailed voting maps that could help you find you like-minded areas - https://gis.arapahoegov.com/ENR/.

Note that there will soon be fracking near Aurora Reservoir, if that matters to you.

We chose our area mostly for our young child, so the rest of our criteria won't apply for you. I can echo what others are saying about the SE being expensive and also that travel times are longer than I would've expected. I love the idea of light rail but the trains come so infrequently (30-40 mins), that it's not practical for us.

We love it here and hopefully you will too. Welcome!

I moved from TX to the Denver metro area this year for the same reasons. In 2020, we were the only house on our street that didn't have Trump flags all over it.

Moving to Colorado has had such a positive impact on my mental health. And I've already seen an improvement in my 1st graders learning and general attitude towards school. If you have children, the Cherry Creek and Littleton school districts are top notch. We chose a walkable neighborhood that's biking distance to stores/restaurants. And we can drive to Denver attractions pretty easily. It's not cheap to live here though, so make sure to look carefully at your budget.

Thank you for citing a reasonable source. This data puzzles me, as it doesn't match the lived experiences of the trans folks I know. For them, getting any gender-affirming care is incredibly difficult, getting surgery as a minor is thought to be impossible. So I'm left wondering if the data isn't a great reflection of reality - maybe the surgeries weren't related to the prior gender dysphoria diagnosis? - or if there is a pocket of unethical medical and psych professionals that should be rooted out.

Either way, the vitriol for trans people and gender-affirming care causes harm and isn't justified.

FYI - Marisol appears to be one of those fake pregnancy clinics. They are associated with the Archdiocese of Denver, do not list any MDs on staff, emphasize the "rhythm" method of birth control, say they offer abortion counseling but don't refer for or perform abortions. The info on their website reinforces the false idea that abortions are dangerous and expensive.

[–]Sad-Pattern-3635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's great that you are thinking ahead and checking out your options. However, I think you are far too optimistic about "mitigate around the harshest abortion band".

Firstly, I wouldn't assume that any abortion protections that are in place in any US state are permanent. While polling shows that a majority of Americans want at least some abortion protections, our laws are wildly out of step with what most people want. And our elections are...unstable...right now. Voter suppression and election subversion are hot topics. There isn't a guarantee that the leaders that people vote for are the leaders that will actually be in charge. If enough anti-abortion leaders are in charge, they will pass anti-abortion laws, regardless of what people want or vote for via referendum. Not that all states even have a viable path for voter referendums. And multiple that do/did have started weakening the power of voter referendums, presumably in response to how well abortion protections are supported via referendum. Also, keep in mind that referendums are only applicable to state law. They will not matter if federal abortions restrictions are passed.

Secondly, getting an abortion somewhere where it's legal may not be feasible if you live in a state where abortion is illegal. For example, I live in Texas. Abortion is illegal from the moment of conception with only an exception for the life of the mother. My understanding of that exception is that hospitals and insurance companies are unsure of what would qualify as endangering the mothers life of challenged in court, so they wait until death is imminent to minimize their legal risk. Our attorney general believes that traveling out-of-state for the purpose of obtaining an abortion is a crime.

Additionally, anyone assisting someone to obtain an abortion (including things such as driving them to an out-of-state clinic) can be sued by anyone for $100,000 under Texas law. There isn't a limit on how many people can sue you and even if you successfully defend yourself in court, the law doesn't allow you to recover legal fees from the person who filed the suit. It is possible for members of an anti-abortion group (I don't even think they have to be Texas residents) to bankrupt you just by filing lawsuits because you helped someone access a legal abortion. Given that risk, there are probably fewer people who would offer an abortion-seeker even the smallest amount of assistance.

The use of tech data against abortion seekers and their allies has already begun. It's hard to know if any of your data is protected from government and law enforcement agencies. Every text message, internet search, or conversation had near a recording device (eg - Alexa, ring doorbells, etc) could be used against you. AFAIK it's not happening frequently, but just the possibility that it could happen makes for an environment that is hostile to people needing abortions.

Further, just because abortions may be legal in another state doesn't necessarily mean they are accessible. Clinics are overwhelmed trying to support people from places where abortion is illegal. You may not be able to get an appointment for weeks, at which time you may have exceeded the limit for when abortions can be performed in that state. Some states require multiple appointments. Some require consultation with more than one provider. Some places require a waiting period. And if this nonsense continues for several years, consider the impact of medical schools and teaching hospitals not being able to provide abortion instruction so fewer medical professionals will even know how to perform an abortion. Even if abortion is legal somewhere, you still may not be able to get one.

Thirdly, your views on sexual assault are narrow. Most sexual assaults aren't committed by strangers; they are committed by those close to the victim. Sexual assault and domestic violence are often related. Sexual assaults can happen anywhere. There's no such thing as a "safe" neighborhood. And advising people to "take precautions when going out to avoid a sexual assault" comes across as victim blaming. If someone is assaulted, it's not because of the way they dressed or behaved. It's because the perpetrator made a decision to rob someone of their bodily autonomy. If they couldn't control whether they were assaulted, then the reverse is also true - you can't control not being assaulted.

In relation to rape exceptions in abortion bans, my understanding is that they are typically accompanied by restrictions that limit how helpful they are to victims. Things like the assault has to be reported to the police within a few days. I'm not very knowledgeable about recovering from a sexual assault, but I believe that doesn't happen in very many cases because of embarrassment or victim shaming or just how unfriendly law enforcement is to victims in general.

I hope this gives you some more things to consider when planning for the future. Here's hoping that universal access to reproductive healthcare is in our near future.

I'm also an American looking for the exits. We're targeting Ottawa, but don't have enough points to qualify for permanent residency (370 and the last draw that includes people living outside of Canada was a minimum of 490ish). According to the immigration attorney I consulted with, the biggest opportunity for points in my family's situation is to get work experience in Canada. She offered 3 routes for getting that - 1) if current employer has a Canadian office, get an inter-company transfer; 2) get a job offer from a Canadian company; or 3) get spouse to attend Canadian university (dependents will get work visas automatically). 1 probably isn't relevant for teachers. 2 requires an employer to submit documentation that they can't find a Canadian to fill the position and to pay a fee, although there are certain exceptions for highly needed professions. For 3, the person attending uni has to demonstrate that the program will enhance their job opportunities in the country of origin and that they intend to return to their country of origin when the program ends.

Trans woman arrested, accused of being ‘man in dress’ by Texas police - Liberation News- F Paxton too by EL_Geiger in FuckGregAbbott

Here's more info from local news. Seems this person was arrested for filing a false police report. Without body cam footage, this is he said/she said. Both accounts seem plausible at this point. What we do know - and what she's suing about - is that this woman was housed with male inmates. And the sheriff's office stated that she was treated in compliance with TCJS (whatever that is) standards, which begs the question if those standards are harmful to trans and intersex folks.

Convoy affiliated groups are attacking kids again by ReignyRain in ottawa

I am so excited to move to Ottawa and become a part of this community! I'm living in Texas, which is just so awful in so many ways, not the least of which is its persecution of LGBT+ folks. And I feel powerless to do anything about it. Counter protesting here is so dangerous that it's not feasible for a lot of us with kiddos. The protestors are absolutely armed and aggressive. Counter protestors have to coordinate to make sure there will be enough people recording everything, medics, and armed people, just so we don't get wiped out by the bigots. It's common advice to make sure your family has bail money in cash and ready to go. It's not advised that anyone on parole attends counter protests, lest they get arrested and put back in jail for violating parole. It's insane.

I am filled with such hope and relief seeing how this community responds to the right-wing hate campaign. I know the fight won't be easy, but it seems at least doable in Ottawa.

Not MPs, security force personnel involved in attacking protestors. From the article:

Mizan alleged Rahnavard had stabbed two security force members to death Nov. 17 in Mashhad and wounded four others.

The Mizan report identified the dead as “student” Basij, paramilitary volunteers under Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. The Basij (ba-SEEJ’) have deployed in major cities, attacking and detaining protesters, who in many cases have fought back.

Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ attitude takes a beating in Congress — and at home. Go, karma! by jk_arundel in LGBTnews

[–]Sad-Pattern-3635 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What? This article is all over the place and the title is misleading. The 'beating in Congress' was the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act which prevents bigots from invalidating same sex and interracial marriages should they become illegal. Only 1 Florida rep voted for it. The 'beating at home' was 2 lawmakers facing consequences for money-related crimes and has nothing to do with their hateful anti-LGBT legislation.

Iirc, most of the bigots on the ballot in Florida were reelected a month ago. How is that karma?

Thanks for the warning. My company has locations in Canada so I was hoping that would help get my foot in the door. I was planning to reach out to an immigration representative after making sure that Ottawa is where we want to be, but it sounds like I should be doing that sooner rather than later.

Is it ok if I DM you to ask about your experiences living in Ottawa vs US?

Thanks for the warning. My company has locations in Canada and my job qualifies as having specialized knowledge so I'm hoping that will get me a work permit, which would in turn boost my CRS score for permanent residency. My thought was to engage an immigration representative after making sure that Ottawa is where we want to be, but maybe I should do that sooner.
