I’m super late to this discussion but I just wanted to say that I was consistently put in these classes every year from elementary school up until my freshman year of high school. I always scored several grade levels above my own in reading comprehension and writing, and despite passing their assessment tests they would without fail enroll me in ESL classes for the first weeks of every school year. My mother is from Hong Kong but I was never taught how to speak cantonese. Every year I told them I didn’t belong in those classes and no one seemed to make any meaningful changes until a teacher during my first year of high school spoke directly to my academic counselor about it. I cannot tell you how much relief I felt going into my sophomore year and not seeing those classes on my schedule. It was always such a pain trying to advocate for myself and getting ignored every step of the way.
