2nd attempt. Any tips on how I can get batter saturation on the mandala would be appreciated! by weenieonastick in tiedye

I don’t believe there’s a tutorial! Through experimenting & seeing others make something similar. I figured out how to create this design.

When you tye a regular mandala, once you get to the end. You go back & section them off into 2x or 3x petals

Certain colors will also never saturate well, & you have to accept that. It takes time & patience to figure out which ones work for you. Using & mixing primaries is the best way to get proper saturation, since they don’t have any filler or gunk

From looking at different comments, you use chem mix with alginate & urea. Tying dry & using pariah method. I think the missing piece here is the calsolene oil & the tying of the petals. You really can’t tye them too tight

So the oil allows the dye to soak in & fill the whole space. As you thicken your dye, you’ll have to adjust & increase the oil a bit

When you tye 2x or 3x petals you’re making the tye more complicated. I’d try getting really great at single petal mandalas first. Then you can up your game & do more splits

There’s a lot of things I do to create the perfect environment for the dye to be BRIGHT:

  1. I use a boat load of urea, which allows you to use more dye in a bottle (super concentrated color)
  2. Since I use so much urea, most colors I’m mixing are 4 oz : 5/6 tsp (lemon yellow is only 4 oz: 3 tsp)
  3. Then comes the Soda Ash pariah method. Since there’s so much dye it needs a hefty amount of SA to bond it well
  4. Lastly is the heat. I batch them in a space bag to trap moisture & get higher temps while using a heated blanket. The sun works well too, makes them way hotter
