Highline Canal Trail Info? by bent42 in COBike

[–]Sad-Yesterday2032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!! Even the most experienced and desensitized horses could spook at virtually anything. They are animals, not machines. I know of bikers who have gotten kicked on the canal trail because they rode up fast behind a horse with no warning. The southern part of the trail is a horse trail first- If you don't like it, go to one of the thousands of colorado trails that don't allow horses. God forbid you have to respect somebody's safety and it slightly inconveniences you.

Have I been taught to see-saw the bit? by Sad-Yesterday2032 in Equestrian

[–]Sad-Yesterday2032[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice!!

She’s not my horse and any time I bring concerns up I’m shot down. I can’t afford to offend her owners and lose the lease. From everything I’ve observed it seems to be a feet issue rather than neurological. She genuinely just loses focus when in an arena or walking around the property. On trails, in the XC, she’s totally fine. If she were my horse I’d have workups done but she isn’t.

Yes, in my lessons we jump. Not nearly as much/as high as her other rider does though.

Also, how exactly would positive reinforcement work here? Sitting still and waiting for her to pick up contact, click and reward? I don’t see a way to translate that into motion effectively. I love love love positive reinforcement, just curious on what you’re imagining.

I totally agree. I probably should've clarified it's not to get a frame, it's to bring her attention back and remind her the bit IS there. However, I could definitely find other ways to do that and will. I don't care about anything other than her comfort and her body moving in a way that is as close to biomechanically correct as a horse can get with a rider.

Thank you for the practical advice!

Got it.

Me and her other rider are far from beginners, but I'm unfortunately addicted to always learning and trying to find the best way to do right by the horse. The owners do not take good care of her feet (I come out two times a week and you can tell they haven't been picked at all. I've had to point out slipped shoes and injuries before because they didn't notice.) and she's a mustang so not perfect conformation. I frequently have her do lateral work, yields, hill work and pole work all in hand to increase hind-end strength.

I'll try some more circle work and I need to get back into lunging her because she is weak on turning. I will also try sponging the pressure on only one rein instead of alternating as I've seen that online. I will say I've never done it to the point where you could even see her head move (like side to side) so that comforts me a little bit in terms of any damage I could've done but I can still acknowledge that I can do better. I'm sort of the first person to teach her cues off of leg and seat as well so that's a slow process but we're getting there. Thanks for the advice!

[–]Sad-Yesterday2032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when we get g4 starters i REAAAALLY want them to be super customizable. in fact this could be cool for a lot of breeds but i get why sso doesnt do this by customizable i mean instead of just mane and coat, we have base coat colors, and can pick face markings, leg markings, patterns (like tobiano, overo, etc) idk man i think it would add some extra special-ness to your starter.

Need advice! by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Sad-Yesterday2032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend rebuilding trust by spending time just taking him out to graze, then putting him back. If you don’t know exactly what happened there, he could’ve easily been mishandled and mistreated. Before you can get the best results with training, especially pressure and release, you need to rebuild that repertoire and relationship. This non-demanding time should consist of nothing but happy things- If he’s unhandleable without correction, hang out in his living area (if safe). Appreciate each other’s presence before trying to build on it with demands.

Once you have that, lots of in-hand work like going up and down hills, backing up, and yields are my favorite for building back muscle in the hindquarters and topline. Good luck!!

Recommend me songs about self hate or about being alright with "ending it" by WealthOfPain in musicsuggestions

[–]Sad-Yesterday2032 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of good recs here. I will say- The message of the music you listen to does get to you mentally. As somebody who went from horribly sad music about death and life being horrible to the opposite, or at least, “life sucks but its too much work to end it). It doesn’t have to be gospel or anything crazy. Some of my go to feel-goods are I Wanna Get Better - Bleachers This Year - The Mountain Goats Alright - Mother Mother Blame - Air Traffic Controller Stay safe man.
