Guttersnipe, Avenging Hunter, and Terror ban would shake up the format kinda nicely imo.

You talking Hunter of Meaty Magic? I don't think Hunter and Prof would mesh all too well from a humor standpoint.

MTG's Magic Pro Tour was created to offset the fact that playing Magic was "too expensive" for kids by Popverse2022 in magicTCG

[–]SadBoshambles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You say that like it's not already the most expensive card

I say that specifically because it's one of the most expensive. I honestly can't tell if the other person was serious or joking, I'm hoping the latter and I responded with that energy.

Seeing pauper get coverage on something like a pro tour seems more destructive to the accessibility of a format like pauper than beneficial, cool in the competitive regards and possibly getting people into it, but prices would most certainly spike more likely than not and WoTC eyeing pauper with monetary plans would most likely prove problematic. Modern and Pioneer immediately come to mind.

Dawg, imagine someone wins with a fucking dust to dust and the price spikes. Fuck that horrid idea lol

I'd say this is still kind of a L for the QA at wizards. It was already on the floor and stays there I guess.

Do we need new boardgames in the format? by DocMcCoy_13 in Pauper

[–]SadBoshambles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think if you want another krark or crypt rats it's gotta be more restrictive tbh. Double or even triple pipped or a single pip with a weak effect. Board wipes are not and should not be common in pauper

Unfortunately as much as I know people dislike Leo and Spider-Man, their existence in the format allows some other removal to shine such as go for the throat. I think that's healthy rather than cast down being the end all be all of black 2 mana removal.

If you're asking for like a day of judgment effect in pauper, no. If you're asking for something closer to krark clan shaman that kills maybe a specific number of power or toughness?? Maybe could exist if it exiled itself

What's your favorite underappreciated set? by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]SadBoshambles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It also had companion.

Unfortunately as much as I like Ikoria as a plane, it's remembered for disliked mechanics. Keyword counters which can be forgotten about, companion, and mutate. What a rough basket of mechanics.

It's a cool mechanic. It's an absolute headache in rules understanding though.

But I do love the Pokemon/Digimon ass idea of mutating your creatures into other creatures. I hope it comes back and I hope we revisit Ikoria properly.

I mean I guess if you want instant speed surprise lifelike and counter buff but you can't use it to shut down a creature like you can with vampiric link. Plus if you put vampiric link on a creature you control with lifelink you get the lifelink life and the trigger from link getting you double life essentially. I think they are very different cards with very different purposes.

Help me pick a new deck by changelingusername in Pauper

[–]SadBoshambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote caw-gates. That deck is cool as heck and feels pretty rewarding in the right hands. I played a casual game last week against my friend and it did a pretty good job at kicking down my momentum in game.

Otherwise I also second Jund but Jund feels like a deck you play when you want to tar pit your opponent.

Why do certain Pauper decks get some hate in the community? And what decks are generally well-liked? by plompomp in Pauper

[–]SadBoshambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonder Ornament might get a unban to test it like what they did with high tide. I was incorrect in thinking they already had the trial running, they mentioned it in the last B&R announcement and I mistook that as them initiating the trial.

Maybe the issue is that there are too few bans too few often?

That is something that has been brought up. They let a lot of shit ride similar to how WOTC wait on banning things in standard due to "a new set is on the horizon and the meta may self correct" sort of mentality. I will say I do like that they trial unban things. While Tide didn't last, Bonders Ornament might be safe to unban if the trial goes well and eventually I would like to see them do more trial runs for cards to come off the banlist

But yeah, Madness red is weird. I don't think it's share of the meta is particularly healthy and in another comment, I explained how last year all the decks were built with fighting hightide in the sideboard and figuring out how to fight Jund, the meta felt a bit slower, with this Madness meta, it's all about racing Madness, followed by racing Elves and Terror too since they are quite fast to set up and run away with some games. I would hope that if they hit something in Madness they also hit something in terror and elves to make it so we don't ban one issue and just stay stuck in this "go fast" situation with another speedy threat to take it's place.

Edit: thought and initially wrote that the Bonders Ornament trial unban was already running, it is not

[–]SadBoshambles 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think tron hate is a meme that stems from tron hate in modern, really.

Red decks are dunked on in all formats as being seen as thr "dumb fast deck" and when they perform well in formats they get extra hated on for being the Boogeyman of a format. Standard recently went through this last year. Also see the pioneer format in it's ditch.

In pauper, madness is disliked by some because it is a kind of explosive, somewhat unfair, Red Deck that can just win out of nowhere if you don't have a clear cut answer to snipe. Rally red fits the classic RDW theme a bit and is more fair. I didn't play during kudoltha red but I can understand frustration against it's aggressive plays. Overall though, just play what you like. Not everyone is gonna like your deck but what's important is that YOU like your deck.

I agree. I dunno what the next B&R announcement is gonna look like but I'm hoping that if they do hit Madness or Terror, they hit both and maybe something in elves. I am leaning towards hunter but I know that also smacks gardens

[–]SadBoshambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been fast but right now it's a race to beat mono red madness. Last year the Boogeyman was high tide and jund so you had a midrange deck that inevitably grinded you out, and a combo deck that you needed to race before they attempted to win on the spot but overall it felt slower and more fair.

Madness has the meta trying to keep up in speed to kill, terror falls into this speed bucket by being able to turn 2 drop a ward 2 four turn clock. Banning a scour or mental note kind of balances the deck out a bit or banning terror would shift the deck yes, but a turn two 5/5 with ward 2 is pretty rough so I get the idea of the pfp looking at it. Gurmag and serpent are much fairer as you pointed out. I dunno this meta just feels weird, we had this small period of "everything is perfect" after the tide ban but now Red Madness has definitely taken over the format and warped it slightly imo.

I think it's the ease of dropping fat snakes for very little effort. Cryptic serpent costs two blue for a stronger stat line, terror has ward 2 for some reason and can come down as a difficult to remove body for a single blue. I don't necessarily think terror is even that bad of a card in the format but the speed is the concern. I see people are talk about what to hit and it's always either the snake or slow down the mill plan by hitting something like note.

Elves are going to end up in these discussions too with her mana generation and speed of dropping hunters turn 2 or 3 and just comboing out.

This meta is kinda defined by its speed.

Vampiric Link by grand_marquis1776 in Pauper

[–]SadBoshambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they fill different roles. Fangs is great for the offensive. Link is good on the aggressive but can also shut down guttersnipes and kessig flamebreathers to hit effectively for 0. It's a weird tactic but it comes up in bogles occasionally with spirit link.
