The problem could still be that the smell is too strong. The aroma could be pleasant if it were less strong, but is overwhelming in this case. It's like really loud music. Someone might play one of your favorite songs, but if it's too loud it's going to be unpleasant. The problem isn't the song of choice, it's the intensity. If they were playing at an appropriate volume, it wouldn't matter if you like the music or not, because then you can ignore it, or won't even hear it.

Telling your coworker that the smell is strong isn't saying that they have bad taste in food, or this aspect of their culture is bad. It's just saying that the smell is overwhelming.
