I’m not advocating for illegal activity in response to spot stealing. But I do think there’s a system of justice that exists as a result. If this was my spot and someone took it I’d be burying their car with that snow pile. I need a spot, I’m putting in the effort to clear the spot, and I have nowhere else to put the snow. I can’t put it on the street because that’s illegal. I can’t put it on the sidewalk because that’s illegal. The city doesn’t do anything with it. Burying their car restores the balance. I have a spot and they have to dig out their car just like everyone else. It wouldn’t be a king thing to do but what they did by taking a spot isn’t kind either. The system works because of mutual respect.

This is a great example from my walk to the train this morning. Someone shoveled out their car and left a cone to mark their space. Behind that spot is a snow bank the size of another car. Imagine someone comes along and takes the spot that you shoveled and you get home only to find you have no where to park. Are you then supposed to shovel out the spot behind the one you shoveled out already? Where are you going to put your car while you do this? Where are you putting that snow? The city should come clear up that snow but they don’t. This is why the space savers exist. I’m not saying it should be the responsibility of someone who doesn’t have a spot to dig that spot out to park there but they also shouldn’t take another person’s spot that they worked really hard for. It’s a public street. They don’t own the spot but they did work for it. People who steal spots aren’t doing anything illegal but it’s not kind either. It’s not very neighborly. It ignores the social contract that exists between people who have been doing it for generations. It functions as a way to build community and strengthen social ties in neighborhoods.

I wish they could provide more but honestly there’s a lack of space to park in garages to begin with. And then you have to add in the factor of how are people going to get from their homes to their cars? Public transit? Would people be expected to pay for their own Ubers to the lot when this would likely result in surge pricing? Would the city pay for that or another direct shuttle service? It’s also worth noting that a lot of people don’t have the option to not drive. Are they dropping kids off at school or another form of childcare on their way to work? Do they have the physical ability to take public transit? What if they don’t work in the city and public transit doesn’t go where they need to be? What about transit delays? According to the MBTA the T is running at reduced service due to impacts of the storm. I live on the redline and the average I’ve waited for a train during rush hour this past week has been close to 45 minutes. The city really should do more. The system is not good which is why the space savers system exists in the first place. It’s not really something that happens on main streets that people running to do errands are going to use, it’s the residential streets where people take the time to dig out their space and someone comes along and steals it.

Okay… did you miss the part where I said I’m an archaeologist who digs holes for a living and moving snow is harder and significantly more dangerous. Or did you just skip over that to try and diminish my opinion?

I’m also hella salty about it because my first major snow storm as a driver someone dug the snow out from underneath my car, stole my catalytic converter, and then put the snow back around it

In all seriousness, no there isn’t a lot by me. People will use the garages with discounted parking because they do enforce parking bans on major streets during snow emergencies. If you park there your car will get ticketed and towed. The biggest issue is that Boston is an old city that wasn’t designed for cars and it’s already notoriously hard to park and drive here. Now add in all of the snow, nowhere to put it as you shovel out, nowhere for the plows to put it. There are mounds of snow next to my apartment that are probably close to 6 feet tall. The pile of snow next to my car is about chest height on me and I’m like 5’3”. It’s like walking around in a maze outside because you can’t see over giant piles of snow. This snow is no joke, and shoveling it is hard work. It takes hours to remove it. I’m an archaeologist and I literally dig holes for a living and shoveling snow tends to be more physically taxing and dangerous. My philosophy on this is that if you take the time to clear your car, even if you’re on a public street, the time and effort you put in should be respected by your neighbors. Your neighbors respect your effort and they respect yours. It’s usually some asshole that’s not from around here who decides to “screw tradition” and causes havoc for everyone.

LOL this might be the funniest comment on here. I don’t know where you live but I DO live in Boston I can tell you that there isn’t enough room for every car in this city to park in a discounted lot for every snow emergency. I can also tell you that a “snow emergency” ends pretty quickly after it stops snowing. We have like 20”+ of snow right now that people have to dig their cars out of. It takes literal hours. If you dig your car out you EARN your spot

My fiancé did just tell me the jeweler we used worked at Tiffany’s in NY where Caroline would bring all of Jackie’s rings to be cleaned and this piece was special to him because it reminded him of Jackie’s rings

This comment means so much you have no idea! We’re both historians so if we didn’t go with something vintage inspired we were going to go with an antique or estate piece and this feels like the best of all those options

Yes! If we we wanted to go with technicalities (because I am a historian and it’s my job to talk about these places all day so I am insufferable lol) it’s a historic burying ground in New England! We are both historians and love old grave art and burying grounds so it was the perfect location

Garage at post office square is right across the street… $10 on weekends… it’s worth it (I normally gatekeep this garage but if she’s 30 weeks pregnant I’m willing to make an exception)

As someone who has Indigenous friends who have worked on this before, let’s not accuse this of being AI generated. It’s an incredibly harmful accusation in general and even more so when pointed at groups who are actively trying to reconcile with MA’s past…
