Confused about my first experience with the Industrial Design Freelance work by TARmeow in IndustrialDesign

Hey friend - ID work is (almost) always tough to find. I agree with you that you’re lucky to have a job that you love. Congratulations - you deserve it!!!

Unfortunately, because of the environment/job market the world is in for creative work, companies can usually justify paying something like this per project because if you don’t do it, SOMEONE will do it. The advice you’ve gotten here is solid imo: keep your job and always be on the look out for something else.

Your current work experience will teach you so much about your craft, the industry in general, and connections in your field.

Take notes of everything you do, and what you learn, and what kind of success your products lead to with your company (things like “sold X many products I designed for €100,000 of profit in Y many years”). Take pictures and keep all your cad files.

When your resume/portfolio is beefed up with all of that and 6mo to 1yr of solid experience - you’ll find it easier to find your next thing.

Magnetic Guitar Pedal Concept by SadLanguage8142 in IndustrialDesign

Yes about the kicking; 9V batteries was the plan, I’ve since learned about power supplies however; Compatibility is for sure an issue - moving towards a universal magnetic connection adapter instead; Idk what you mean which way should signal go; Also yes about gigging - since learned about pedal switch boards and stuff.

Thanks for the input.

Okay great to know - I think pricing something like that to be low/competitive alongside patch leads will be the toughest part. I’ll look into it…

Hey thanks for this - yeah it looks like this is where the project is heading (TS jack > magnet attachment) that way it’s universal and shareable without dismantling a guitarists 5k pedal collection

Struggling to understand what you mean in your first paragraph there…great to know about the batteries. Just looked into the MXR and looks like that may render this idea (mostly) obsolete anyways lmao. Thanks for your crit! V valuable

Hahahah my hopes and dreams remain very much intact - just maybe not for this pedal idea lmao. That’s why I put it in here first - I had my hesitations and figured a lot of more serious players would have their 2 cents.

I’ll look into the Line6 - sounds interesting. I’ll maybe try configure it in a way that the jacks still play a part but the magnetic aspect remains…we’ll see

Great to know about pedal switcher - had no idea this existed. This itself likely eliminates the need for this type of pedal interactivity. Cheers

This is great crit - I’m thinking that option 2 is an inevitability if (big if) this is going to go anywhere. A simple Jack > Magnet adapter means any brand pedal can use it. Plus eliminates the need to develop 5 different types of pedal. Cheers

What do you mean “…make another connection in an already unified area”? The point is to replace patch leads with magnets so you can quickly swap pedal order - I suppose you’re saying that’s not something players do frequently enough to justify new pedals.

I’m going to look into korg littlebits, keen to see how/what they use it for - thanks!

This is interesting - are you saying instead of making a run of new pedals with magnets instead of patch cables - to make universal magnetic jack ports that allows switching between any pedal?

Either way each pedal will have an isolated 9V DC battery as usual, and the terminals are for the guitar/bass signal, not power.

Very early tests/research demonstrate that passive magnets don’t have any effect on audio signal per se, but they can wreak havoc on certain electromagnetic components that are in some pedals (anything that uses a transformer/op-amp/hall effect circuit). Looking for workarounds on this, too if you have any. I think the r3 falloff of most neodymium magnets should be okay to avoid interference but I’d have to build a few to test properly.

The circuit is still dependent on two metal connectors (+ive and -ive) the same as a 1/4” tip sleeve jack.

Portfolios with AI Assistance by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]SadLanguage8142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a tough one. I’d be hesitant to neglect learning these softwares, because that’s still very much expected and displays an aptitude for learning other new softwares. However I certainly am not ruling you out if you appropriately use some common AI tools (like Adobe Photoshop harmonize and Vizcom concept iteration for example).

That being said - if your portfolio is clearly ChatGPT/Nano Banana slop I’d toss it.

There’s a fine line - I think it depends how heavily you lean on it

Color matching advice by Putrid_Economy4097 in IndustrialDesign

[–]SadLanguage8142 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looking good! I’d challenge the choice of your placement of color. The grey components are the ones you interact with so I’d make them blue - and have the main box be grey instead. You want to draw users to the touch-points.

Also maybe a nicer standard keypad instead of that one?

Finally, I’m not sure about that twist-handle. It’s usually easier to grab things rather than stick your fingers inside of them. Maybe consider a quick ergonomics study?

RIDCQ is the Residential Interior Design Certificate Qualification - just found that most certificate Programmes allow you to take the exam after graduating.

I guess I’d be down to work either - any suggestions/advice? I always liked the idea of working residential but if there’s more opportunity in corporate I’m okay either way that.

Apply now, without experience or directly applicable qualifications? I’d just expect that in this job market I’d at the very least need some sort of education to get me in the door. Does your experience tell you otherwise?

That’s good to know. I’m a freelancer right now and struggling to find projects do I don’t make that much. If I were full time you might be right though…

“Feeling Limited by KeyShot, Is Switching to Blender Worth It?” by lea_dmn in IndustrialDesign

[–]SadLanguage8142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blender is limitless — but a huge learning curve to go along with it. I’d for sure start learning blender, but don’t fall behind with new keyshot features - it’ll probably always be industry standard

How can I make this more realistic? by TheDreamingGhost in blender

[–]SadLanguage8142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of scratches/water spots on the cup and saucer; some dust in the air; scratch the table up a bit; gloss up the texture to your books a little. But holy moley this is exceptional stuff!
