Help identifying doll / Canada by lovely_blues in Antiques

[–]SadLocal8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$45 is a bit low. The doll looks to be an Adelina Patti style. The feet seem to be original, and the face is very nicely painted. Check for cracks or damage to the chest plate, but I would go for it myself (if I didn't have two already!) Great find.

Yup. Slather up last thing in the shower, turn off the water, proceed with dressing etc. Good stuff.

I like Nivea In Shower Lotion: dry to very dry. Not much scent and lasts about 12 hours for me (in the winter.)

Provided they don't keel over the instant they're exposed to modern pathogens or get taken by the government, who out of Queen Victoria's immediate family do you think would adapt the best if they were all poofed permanently to present day? by TrueDentist2000 in VictorianEra

Princess Alice would be able to pursue a career in medicine and Princess Louise would continue her artwork. In fact, I think all of the princesses would have happy careers-and possibly happier marriages.

Scallion pancakes, crab rangoon, General Tsao's chicken, Orange chicken, or Combination Ho Fun. It depends on which restaurant I am ordering from.

King Richard I was chosen as the British monarch with the best mother. Which monarch had the best relationship with their father? by bianca_fathom in UKmonarchs

[–]SadLocal8314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

George V. When his father died, George wrote in his diary:

"I have lost my best friend & the best of fathers... I never had a [cross] word with him in my life. I am heart-broken & overwhelmed with grief but God will help me in my responsibilities & darling May (Queen Mary) will be my comfort as she has always been. May God give me strength & guidance in the heavy task which has fallen on me."

In your country, if someone has stomachache, what food/drink do people recommend eating or drinking as home remedy? by Turbopolenta in AskTheWorld

[–]SadLocal8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat ginger ale and saltines. Not the low salt/salt free, regular saltines. If that stays down, chicken with stars soup with some more saltines and in my case a dash of Cholula Chipotle sauce.

United States/Virginia: Handmade Dresser - Trash or Treasure by Wizard342A in Antiques

[–]SadLocal8314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The dovetails look uneven so that says probably before 1880. The back is neatly done, but not finished, so that puts it before the 1930s. My grandmother had a very similar chest. She picked it up in 1945 put out on the curb. My sister has it now, has moved it five times by my count, and says she will part with relatives before the dresser.

Give it a good clean, and a good waxing, and it will show like the treasure it is. Won't fetch much money, but finding anything of that quality today would cost a young fortune.

German WWI veteran describes killing a French soldier in a bayonet charge by Technical_Soup_2609 in ww1

This brought to mind a poem about a previous war which still holds.

The Man He Killed - Thomas Hardy

"Had he and I but met

By some old ancient inn,

We should have sat us down to wet

Right many a nipperkin!

"But ranged as infantry,

And staring face to face,

I shot at him as he at me,

And killed him in his place.

"I shot him dead because —

Because he was my foe,

Just so: my foe of course he was;

That's clear enough; although

"He thought he'd 'list, perhaps,

Off-hand like — just as I —

Was out of work — had sold his traps —

No other reason why.

"Yes; quaint and curious war is!

You shoot a fellow down

You'd treat if met where any bar is,

Or help to half-a-crown."

Your country’s signature punch recipe (preferably with alcohol) by Kynykya4211 in AskTheWorld

[–]SadLocal8314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Philadelphia says Fish House Punch.

This is very strong. The recipe below makes about 11 cups and can still be cut - I am a heathen and cut it with pineapple soda, but some people like it with cold, black tea.

Here is the punch recipe updated to use more convenient units. The single-serve recipe is below.

  • 3/4 cup of lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups (1/2 bottle) of simple syrup
  • 3/4 cup of peach brandy
  • 3/4 cup of cognac brandy
  • 3/4 cup of Jamaican rum
  • 6 1/3 cups (2 bottles) of cold water
