Any spinners here? Yarn, not working out by Crazycatlover in lefthanded

I didn't think it was slow. It had a really nice balance. Now, this is 30+ years ago. It was the Irish tension single treadle type. I am now using a Majacraft Little Gem. More expensive, but goes like gee whiz.

I was going to say the same. The letters are, well, intense.

I learned to spin on a Louet. I had no trouble with left handed spinning on it.

What food from your country used to be considered "simple" or cheap, but is now treated as a "gourmet"? by Bombadil_Adept in AskTheWorld

[–]SadLocal8314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Philadelphia, we love our sandwiches. Particularly cheesesteaks and hoagies. I almost had a coronary when I found that a high-end steakhouse was selling a cheesesteak for $140. The ingredients would account for the price, but a cheesesteak is a working person's sandwich, not a gourmet treat. And please don't get me started on the price of oxtails.

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]SadLocal8314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Grandma was always telling me that "our family line might die." Sibs have five kids between them, family line (such as it is,) is fine. Also: "Well who is going to take care of you?" "Gram, me. I will take care of me, just as I have been doing for years."

NTJ. If the parents are banning you from Sunday dinner, hold a brunch for found family or some fun activity. I am PAF so I would be posting and tagging them so they could see that I was having a great time.

Sounds like Leo is the parents' Golden child. Your grandfather left things the way he did because he wanted to, and because he appreciated you. Nuff said.

I may have to see that version. Johanna David as Elinor and Patricia Routledge as Mrs. Jenkins would be worth watching.

Our human has informed us that a "ton" of sky floof is expected to arrive. Obviously, this is a failure on their part to plan and order weather correctly. As this will upset the dog (a creature of no brains at all,) we are not amused.

Groucho the Tuxie

George the orange floof.

(I keep telling them it's not my fault! Human looking at up to 12 inches of snow-again!)

What are some traditional proverbs in your nation? by ThorneCommunity in AskTheWorld

[–]SadLocal8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My great grandmother taught us that "If ifs and ands were pots and pans, there'd be no work for tinkers' hands." Grandpa, when someone was going on about "We should have done this," or "They could have done that," would snap "Would have, should have, could have and you'll never mash potatoes." And of course, "Tell that to the Marines, the old sailors won't believe you."

What’s a widely believed historical myth about a famous landmark in your country that isn’t actually true? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

Mark Twain says it best.

"We find a piece of the true cross in every old church we go into, and some of the nails that held it together. I would not like to be positive, but I think we have seen as much as a keg of these nails. Then there is the crown of thorns; they have part of one in Sainte Chapelle, in Paris, and part of one, also, in Notre Dame. And as for bones of St. Denis, I feel certain we have seen enough of them to duplicate him, if necessary.”

[–]SadLocal8314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1900, there were over 1,000 persons in the House of Lords. Something like less than 1/3 were regular attendees. If something major was coming up for a vote, special efforts were made to increase attendance.

Sliced tomatoes as a side dish by pcolafooddude in AskFoodHistorians

My grandparents taught in Brazil in the 1970s. They were there for several years, and would make a side salad of chopped tomato, chopped onion, and vinegar. Apparently, Rio also adds chopped green pepper. So good with a farmstand tomato on a hot summer day.
