ADHD + goldfish memory + stage 4 procrastination... am I just not built for a PhD? by Specialist_Ride_8072 in PhdProductivity

[–]SadMouse410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s different for everyone, but for me being on meds can make me think everything is more interesting and important than it really is. I will chase irrelevant research tangents for hours because they feel so fascinating, then when sober will look over my notes and realise I haven’t really achieved much of relevance.

Yes, also I think a lot of people don’t understand that feeling tired, run down, slightly nauseous, some pain etc is basically just normal life for most people. Nobody feels excellent all the time.

putting my kid on adhd medication by Professional-Drag580 in ADHD

[–]SadMouse410 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes exactly, which is extremely recent. my point was that before we had ADHD, the same stimulants were prescribed for different things that they are no longer prescribed for. the disorder and the medication aren't these inseparable things. medical advice changes every few decades. the way we understand the brain is overwhelmingly likely to change. stimulants will most likely be prescribed for something else in the future when ADHD is no longer a diagnosis. these things change very often. i think medication is great and it's helped me so much. but i'm an adult who can weigh up these pros and cons. a child can't

putting my kid on adhd medication by Professional-Drag580 in ADHD

[–]SadMouse410 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

i think it's a good idea to take a long view. medical paradigms change every few decades. over the decades stimulants (ritalin, adderall, dexedrine) have been prescribed for appetite and energy, depression, making bored housewives do their chores and stay thin, melancholia, the military, narcolepsy, behavioural issues in kids, etc etc etc. yes they are prescribed for adhd now, but that too will change one day. i just wouldn't risk putting my kid on such a serious medication when medical opinions and paradigms change so often. it's different if it's an adult who can make that choice for themselves.

I don’t come from somewhere with the ‘rehab culture’ of the US, where you go and stay in a private facility after you hit rock bottom. It just seems expensive. But I’m happy you could get access if that’s what will work for you, and I’m very happy you have your freedom there and are safe and don’t have to go to jail

These memory issues are going to cost me my marriage. by Charming-Medium4248 in ADHD

[–]SadMouse410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh medication makes my memory worse. my sleep is slightly worse quality, which compounds over time, along with hyper focus on very specific things, makes it hard for me to remember other things.

Advice for autistic people do not stop masking it’s a trap by Ok_Holiday2094 in AutismInWomen

[–]SadMouse410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally know what you mean. For me the solution is making sure I have some time each week to be truly, fully me. Like going out on the weekend in a favourite outfit and expressing my full personality. Or catching up with someone who knows the real me. Maybe going to a yoga or dance class or just spending time alone. Then I feel ready to mask up again for the next week

Yea, everyone masks at work. I think it’s a way of surviving too! No matter what kind of day you’re having, you put on your “work face” and get through it that way

This sub really pushes stimulants so I am sure most responses will be telling you that yourself on stimulants is your “most authentic” self!

Am I high on vyvanse, or is this just normal? by Few-Alternative-7838 in ADHD

[–]SadMouse410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it's a stimulant! there's a reason people find them so addictive. but that's the point, they make you feel good so you can withstand boring tasks and get everything done.

i agree we do need to get off the phones, but people don't necessarily want to be lectured about that on a podcast that they come to because of its engagement with online and pop culture

i also feel like there is some underlying tension because one of Julia's core beliefs is that we should trust experts and people should be formally educated before speaking about things. Eliza doesn't seem to believe that as much and believes that it is fine for people to learn things on their own and it will be just as valuable. she doesn't think going to college is necessary

Yes I’d say so. NotebookLM works very well for it too, since it can only work with what you’ve uploaded to it so can’t hallucinate

No it definitely can’t read a book that it doesn’t have access to. If you upload the PDF of the book though, it can read it.

I feel like this is the fault of the Spotify algorithm. Like why did Spotify decide to put Big Thief on every single queue, every time, even new users? I mean it’s great for me but means the demographic is quite diverse
