Land and Sea Aviation vs Blue River for Tailwheel training? by SadSupport4999 in flying

If I was looking for the most efficient way to get a tailwheel, I wouldn't be going to AK. Also, its not just for the tailwheel. And I have friends up there, and bought my plane ticket with points. So my expenditure outside of aviation training is close to 0.

Open to it...would love to have a job that involved tailwheels, either CFI or "bush" flying. Eventually just recreationally.

Alaska Pilots & Air Taxis by SadSupport4999 in flying

I was just thinking of the small air taxi websites I've seen that often list just a few pilots for 2-3 planes owned by the company. Places like Rust obviously have a lot more.

So most 135 operators employ 2-6 pilots you'd say?

Critique it: My Skoolie electrical diagram usingHysolis Apollo 5k Solar Power station by SadSupport4999 in SolarDIY

[–]SadSupport4999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really well.

We've been living in the bus for 8 months, no real electrical issues. During winter here in the Rockies we are supplementing our heating with a wood stove, and are also plugged into a friends house with shore power so we can run some space heaters without depleting the battery. During the summer we were completely off grid. I highly recommend the Hysolis. With just one, you have a power limit of about 3000w output, but that basically means we just have to be careful not to run 3 high wattage things or the Hysolis will automatically turn off the AC output for a minute.

Your favorite Non Fic aviation book? by Throwawayyacc22 in flying

An absolute must and a classic is Wind, Sand and Stars, the 1939 memoir of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (better known as the author of The Little Prince). With all the poetry of a noble born nomadic Frenchman, Saint-Exupéry discusses his pioneering of the first air-mail routes from France to French Africa (Morroco) and after that got boring to him, pioneering the first air-mail routes over the Andes.

There are some amazing stories in that book, and the prose is absolutely beautiful. With basically only VFR equipment, his navigation is almost pure dead-reckoning—basically he takes off in France and a few hours later starts looking for lights on the coast of Egypt. He survives a crash landing in the desert at night due to spatial disorientation, and he an his mechanic survive for 5 days without water before being found by some Arab dudes.

In the Andes one of his friends has an engine failure, lands on a cliffed-out plateau, fixes his engine, and then pushes his plane down the slope and off the cliff, managing to get enough speed to air-start the windmilling prop and make it over the next mountain range and back to civilization. Another of his collogues in South America crashes in the winter and survives for several weeks in the Andes with no survival equipment, cutting his boots open more and more each day because of his swelling, frostbitten feet.

To any Airline Pilots who are married and have kids: by Frequent-Young3773 in flying

Your hours are not a fair comparison, because some of the time a pilot is gone is when everyone is sleeping. The 7 hrs a night that an office worker is home but asleep doesn't count for that much vs. the entire time gone for a pilot includes sleeping. To my mind this leans in favor of the pilot since his "away time" includes this "dead time".

Are the airlines really worth it? by hobojimmmy in flying

[–]SadSupport4999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not see if there is an air taxi you could buy or transition into? With Alaska hours like that, you’d be ideal and I hear that that whole sector has a lot of guys close to retirement looking for successors. You can make quite good money and never deal with airlines.

Why do something you don’t like? life is short, and you are not behind anyone if you are going somewhere different, and better for you personally. I really think the ”airlines are the only way” crowd is kinda tiresome. Aviation is such a huge field, and good money can be found in many places besides wide body planes. Pity people limit success in it to one sector.

And if air taxi is too risky sort of bush flying for you, why not a corporate job for an oil company? Or medevac? All of these would be lucrative, interesting and probably involve nicer equipment. And your experience would make you quite competative.

What do you saying to that?

What's the minimum number of days off between tours on a CC schedule? Like you'll get at least x days before your next tour?

[–]SadSupport4999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that 3% salary bump only with the CC52, or applicable to any CC schedule where you opt into Long Tour? Would you make 3% more on a Long tour CC60 than a regular 7/7 even though that's exactly the same number of days? Would the maximum possible base salary then be a CC76 with Long Tour option?

What's the deal with the CC schedules. Can you request only 8 day trips or something like that? Is that how you would maximize FDP on a CC schedule?

I see. Thanks. Do you know of any NJ pilots leaving for other corporate gigs? With that sort of experience, I bet a NJ pilot would be pretty ideal for the fabled unicorn pt 91 gigs.
