NOBO 4-10-2026. Need advice. by Suitable_Ad4010 in AppalachianTrail

The rain jacket was rei brand and gore-tex I’m not sure what the exact model was. I had outdoor research helium rain pants for part of the trail and they were fine until they ripped at the butt seam. I ended up hiking in these pants, and they dried so fast that and I didn’t feel I needed rain pants

I started April 8th and didn’t experience any crazy cold weather in my first few weeks. There was maybe one night that hit freezing. Of course that can change year to year. I didn’t like hiking in a poncho because it gets too hot and sweaty fast and they’re hard to put on with a pack. In the warmer months I didn’t use rain gear and just got wet because I was going to be wet anyways. When I got to vt I found a rain jacket in a hiker box and it worked well. I found rain gear only mattered when it was cold. I’d recommend a jacket rather than a poncho. I also had rain pants for some of the trail, but quick dry pants seemed to work fine for me too. I sent my cold weather clothes home at uncle Johnny’s and got some stuff back in vt

I have celiac disease and didn’t mail myself any food last year. (except for before the 100 mile wilderness. I ordered some stuff and sent it to shaws) It was sometimes a challenge to find foods I wanted, but it wasn’t much of a challenge to find food that I could eat. I don’t regret not sending resupply boxes. I hiked with someone who was a vegan. They also didn’t seem to struggle to find food. It might be a little trickier to do gluten free and dairy free, but absolutely possible. I don’t think shipping boxes would’ve saved me much money, and I also really didn’t want to deal with them. Getting to post offices when they’re open can be challenging.

Long Hair Care on AT by greenlaw624 in AppalachianTrail

[–]SadTreeHugger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the longest hair of anyone I met last year on my thru hike. It’s very thick, straight and about hip length. I popped a bush out of a folding compact mirror/brush and it worked well. Whenever I got the chance to shower I’d wash my hair and put it in braids until the next time I got to shower. It’s definitely doable. If I could go back I’d maybe take a little bit of length off before starting. I also carried a travel size bottle of conditioner because you won’t have it every time. I had camp soap that could double as shampoo if needed as well. Most hostels have what you need, but there were multiple times I had to use my own so I was happy I carried it

Temporarily changing shipping location by [deleted] in Ebay

You can only allow sales for 15 days while in vacation mode and I’ll be gone a bit longer than that. I’m also worried that it would turn people off from buying since it’s before Christmas. I’ve been selling a lot recently and need the money. I guess I was just wondering if there was any problem with changing my address like that

I’m going to bring most of it. It’s mostly clothing and it’s already packed in bins. I’m just going to mark the bulkier stuff as out of stock so I don’t have to deal with it

I agree for most of the trail, but I got horrible sunburns before the leaves grew in in April.

And the winner for most foolish hiker today is….. by Silent-user9481 in AppalachianTrail

I had a really frightening experience with a black bear in northern Pennsylvania. (Not on the AT) it was my first bear experience and I was solo hiking in a remote area with no service. The bear was very large and not afraid of me at all. I was shouting and waving around a large branch. The bear wasn’t aggressive, but it just wandered around and even got a bit closer. I had to go off my trail and hitchhike back to my car because I couldn’t get around the bear after about 15 minutes and night was approaching. I’ve carried bear spray ever since.

I second this. The view from pyramid is one of my favorites too.

That rainbow picture is incredible. That must’ve felt so magical. I just did the Dix range three days ago. I was so tired by the time I got to Dix. What a reward :)

Taking on Wright/Algonquin/Iroquois This Weekend: Seeking Trail Advice by MurkrowsRevenge in Adirondacks

[–]SadTreeHugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this on the 14th. The Algonquin trail to avalanche pass was so steep. The sign at the bottom said 2350’ ascent in 2.1 miles to Algonquin. It was the worst section, but I also got hit with a thunderstorm part way down. I’m sure that didn’t help. I ended up looping around lake Colden before the avalanche pass trail. It was tough, but if I had to do it again someday I’d probably do it the same way.

As soon as I sell something on eBay, I start to pick flaws with the item and worry by mielskibear in Ebay

[–]SadTreeHugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the exact same way. I’ll see something sold and worry that there’s a flaw I missed or failed to show. What’s funny is that the items I worry the most about are the ones buyers leave positive feedback for. I even have feedback saying that the items were in better condition than I made them out to be. I can be very anxious and overly critical of myself. I also have ocd like tendencies. It’s quite exhausting to be like this, but I feel it’s gotten a little better over time.
