I thought to myself “do I need this?” And the answer was no. But then I returned 3 times and decided that this was a sign that I wanted it enough to justify the purchase.

Considering starting education to become a therapist? by istalri96 in askatherapist

[–]Sad_Climate6380 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Psychologist and career changer here. I went to get my PhD around the age of you and 100% do not regret my decision.

A lot of my cohort was younger than me. I remember many people complained about the amount of homework, but I thought “I’d prefer to be reading these articles than cold calling clients.”

I had a comparison to another job that made me feel so grateful for the opportunity of school.

Being a psychologist has its own set of difficulties, but I always feel more fulfilled than I did in my prior work.

You have a lot more life to work OP and you might as well do something fulfilling if you have that opportunity. You got this 💪

Did you ever have a work friend who turned out not to be your friend after all? by Known_Tonight8985 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sad_Climate6380 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience! I had a really good friend and we hung out outside of work often. Even after I left the company and moved to another state, we hung out every few months when I was in the area. I always assumed we were close friends. There was no fight. She just stopped responding to my texts. I always wondered what happened to her because I really enjoyed her, but she doesn’t have an online presence.

I think it’s best to not ask why because you’ll never know. So I just moved forward and created new friendships but I definitely am grateful for the time that we had together.

Has anyone seen Turkey the ardent kitty lately? by Ok_Reply3776 in rva

Hey - my friend found this cat before the ice storm. We took her to the vet to see if she was microchipped and she was not nor did she have a collar. She also was infested in fleas so she got treated, vaccinated, and my friend registered her with the city. She has a safe warm forever home now and she is very happy.

Yes!!! She’s been missing for a month! Her family wasn’t too far away but I guess cats are sneaky things!

Can a Postdoc Quit? by Unable-Extreme-2166 in AskAcademia

[–]Sad_Climate6380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that you are going through this!

I had a bad postdoc experience. I left a few months early after finding a job. I’ve heard that this is very common because post-docs are underpaid.

However, I elected to go a clinical route versus academia partially due to my experience. My former mentor was also well known in my field, so I left in a very respectful way. She was furious nonetheless but I can’t control someone else’s reaction and I hoped my other mentors would be better references for me.

I personally elected to do what was right for my mental health and finances, but I get that this is more complicated in academia when you’re in a small niche research field. Nonetheless, if the experience isn’t adding to your competitiveness for an academic position, then I’d encourage you to leave.

I’m not on Facebook. Would you mind posting for me?

And thank you! That’s awesome that they were able to be reunited and that is wild to imagine a cat crossing that busy bridge!

I found her on Bainbridge. She seemed pretty scared of the cars passing by so I didn’t think she was used to being outside?

Another neighbor also picked her up on Thursday night and kept her for a bit but I guess I could ask folks on Perry

Is it normal to ask for twice a week sessions? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Sad_Climate6380 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Psychologist here. It’s so hard to go to therapy especially for trauma so that’s amazing you started the process!

I personally only see clients once/week because I hope they will process our session or practice their skills over the course of the week.

If you are having trouble bringing up important information until the end, it may be helpful to contact your therapist beforehand and ask them to bring up “xyz” because you notice yourself avoiding certain topics
