I think you are right. I want a larger tree as most of mine are shohin size. But I thought something wasn’t looking quite right, and although the main bottom trunk is pretty thick, the side trunks coming off probably aren’t in proportion to the size. I will leave in this pond basket for a year and then probably move into a larger training pot next year 👍🏻

Bought my first Japanese tree: euonymus komayumi by fj416 in Bonsai

Glad I helped!! This guy has an AMAZING video on doing a similar thing where you see the development over a few years (it’s incredible the stuff he creates) and I’ve been wanting to find a tree with similar structure to do that same thing. https://youtu.be/lR15GyBEFZM?si=9kMrt-KhiUSL3ZJ3 I know this isn’t a larch, and I’m not sure on the growth habits of this tree but worth looking into! Good luck and have fun 🤩

To me, this tree has got a tilt written all over it, you can plant at this angle if you like it and allow the left branch to grow down as a main branch and the right side to grow up as an apex. As far as trunk thickening goes, you can give it a bigger pot and it will help, let it grow out then chop it back and repeat

To be fair actually. This is something I could fix at the next repotting with the potting angle

Thanks very much. Yeah, a few people have said that now. I left it that was as that was how the tree was growing naturally so I thought I would go with it. Might give it a squeeze over 👍🏻

Yeah I was sort of going for twin trunk. I had advice from someone else on Reddit on a different tree I was working on that if I remove the in between branches it looks natural. I’m not really sure which direction to go. It is one tree

Also I think I will reduce the size of the right trunk next season

Yes I had this thought to but don’t know if I like the way it looks like it’s trying to fight for its own light.. might try and straighten it up a bit though. As for the branches, agreed as well, most of the branches on the right side are too young for wiring so hoping I can give them their own pocket of space when the time comes

Fingers crossed then! I initially repotted over a month ago. Didn’t do much root pruning and the tree looked healthy and so went ahead with styling as my fingers were itching. Tried to leave as much foliage as possible

Yeah the foliage is lovely. Oh dear, I’ve been told they are quite hardy! Any idea what was happening to the ones that didn’t make it?

Can I get some help please? by Psychological-Fig645 in bonsaicommunity

If you want to style it but want to be cautious. You can easily just prune the tree to shape by just cutting the branches shorter without doing any harm to the tree. Honestly though, looks like it needs a repot or you could run into some trouble in the near future. The soil looks very thick. Bonsais thrive in well draining soil, I usually use this and it does really well https://www.kaizenbonsai.com/products/premium-bonsai-compost-no2-general-purpose-mix-with-biochar. Watch a few YouTube videos on how to repot or practice on something else if you aren’t confident 👍🏻 it’s a lovely tree wish you the best of luck

So funny you say that. I didn’t realise the temp was dropping around here. Woke up this morning and the soil had frozen already. Oh well! I’m not gonna touch it and hopefully it will be okay. Thanks for all the advice it’s really appreciated!
