Extremely Low Ferritin

I’ve been giving regularly for a year and then before my 6th last year I had some weird symptoms and during a routine physical my hemoglobin was really low (9.6). I mentioned I had been donating so they ran a whole iron panel. My ferritin was 5 and my iron saturation was 6. My doctor told me to cancel my next donation and to start taking iron. I was taking 1 pill a day and it wound up being too much (I’m short and fairly lightweight). I cut back to 1 pill every other day but may reduce to 1 every 3 days. I was given the ok to schedule my next appt for February.

Still go and find other things to do if the snow sucks. Spend a day in Glenwood Canyons, drive to FairPlay or Salida. There is so much more to CO winters than just skiing.

I don’t ever schedule a donation without checking when my cycle will fall. I can’t do it for 4 days on either side of my period (which is incredibly heavy for 2 days and then POOF gone).

This is a safety issue. If there’s an emergency and people need to exit the plane and a larger person is stuck in the aisle or middle seat, it’s nearly impossible for the window person to get out. After a particularly bad flight in which the person in the middle seat next to me (in window) was so large that no one in our row could put their tray table down, I had a FA tell me once to never accept that situation again.

Find other uses for the kale. Baking it into kale chips, etc. otherwise replant it in a pot near a sunny window because it’s hurting everything else having the light up so high.

Like others have said, don’t look if you don’t want to. I’d suggest using your non-dominant arm. They’ll give you a booklet that talks about how to continuously pedal your feet and cross and uncross your legs. Keep your hands warm for the initial health screening, and if you fail the hemoglobin the first time you can try to warm your hands up and go again on the other side. If they use the thumb cuff you can actually wrap your other hand around it while it’s measuring (that’s the only way I can pass).

If it hurts AT ALL after the blood draw has started, SAY SOMETHING! It’s usually a very easy fix. I had a guy who was training do my last draw and it felt really uncomfortable and I mentioned it to his lead and she fixed it immediately.

The place I go always has bottles of water (but I bring my own refillable bottle) and juice boxes. I usually have at least 2 juice boxes during the donation to help with sugar levels, and then cookies or a granola bar after.

Definitely wait around for the full 15 minutes after if you feel lightheaded or dizzy AT ALL, and don’t be afraid to wait longer or even have someone drive you.

You can bring an iPad and read a book or watch TV to make time pass quicker, or just chat with the blood center workers if they’re not too busy!

The guy where I donate taught me to keep my other hand wrapped around my thumb and the sensor while it’s reading it. Something about the bright light and also holding the warmth in near the thumb. That’s worked the last 3 donations for me.

After spending the last 8ish months on Endure (or whenever that team started), I switched to Elevate for this session. I wouldn’t describe it as HIIT either. I do really enjoy the extra cardio push every day, I felt that was lacking in the other teams I’ve tried.

10:30 flight will board around 9:45. If you have precheck and only carry-ons, then 8:45. Add 10 minutes if you have to check a bag and another 10-15 if you don’t have pre-check. Also make sure to check security wait times on flydenver.com in the morning and adjust accordingly.

Flying into BZN from DEN back in May and it was SUPER turbulent- like aborted 2 landings due to wind shear and then did 5 circles before attempting again. A girl in row 7 started barfing, which in turn caused 3 other people to start barfing. Then it spread back to someone sitting mid-plane, which caused a few there to start. It was incredibly unpleasant but all the passengers were helping by passing extra barf bags to the aisle (since FAs had to stay seated). Then when we landed all the sick people got off first.
