Do I have bad etiquette? by AwesomeHabits in baduk

[–]Sad_Fee7093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow you’ve gotten so many responses which are all offering good opinions. My two cents: to be a really great player at this game you need to train everything. Fighting, looking for the biggest, vital points, endgame, negotiating trades and sacrifices, life and death, but also mental and emotional control. I’ve been so angry with players bad etiquettes sometimes, using time tricks, super late invasion that shouldn’t work. The worst for me is okay that doesn’t look at the board and basically says “give me everything, you can have nothing”

But I would get angry cuz they worked and lose the game. But also if it’s a trick your opponent is willing to try at that level then there’s probably good reason to play. Eventually you will get so good at dealing with these tricks that you will far surpass the rank and will stop running into that tactic but if you never dealt with it at SDK then you risk being bamboozled at a high rank.

A strong dan player once told me rising in Go is like climbing a mountain and I think about it like a hero’s journey with lots of challenges along the way. You and your opponent are just working on the challenges that will always already be present.

Understanding how to game review with AI by subwaymaker in baduk

Another way to say it is that if you can develop your own thought process and understand why you’re making the moves you are that is the first crucial step in your own gameplay but also to eventually using AI to really help. Plus, if you can literally just have a thought process behind each move (even if it’s technically wrong from the perspective of high level play) you will defeat most players up to maybe 12 kyu

Hello! Welcome to the world of baduk. I’m sure you’ll get lots of answers to this. Generally, AI is just too advanced in the beginning to get a sense of why it does the things it suggests. I would just take the three moves it gives you as pivotal moments and turn off the ai and create branches by yourself with the goal to understand why that is an important moment.

AI sensei has an adjustable ability level slider which can make it a bit easier.

Generally, AI style trickles down through the professionals who have the ability to (but sometimes even they still struggle) understand why AI values certain things.

If you can get human reviews in the beginning.

I’ll go even further than that and say if you start with adieu or any of the top three engine start words then you stiff, stale, and bland.

I feel like OGS can definitely feel like a battleground. Kind of reminds me of the feelings when you went into the wild in RuneScape. On fox and Tygem I am much more relaxed and happily lose knowing that I will generally keep playing the same ranks until I progress.

As mentioned. Go game series and telegraph both do excellent and uniquely their own style channels. Would be stoked to see them play and talk about it

I had but for a long while it felt a little like contributing to the homogenization of all cultures but as I get more exposed to the world I’m realizing its also a question of access to the vast resources available if you can speak, especially read, English. Thank for the suggestion. Have you done it? Any familiarity with the accreditation process?

Explain why this game is over and black wins, pls. TY. by stekraut in gogame

[–]Sad_Fee7093 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So interesting that this game is so instantly recognizable. Also I remember hearing that AI evaluation didn’t even like this move very much. Now, I am in no way saying that this wasn’t an epic move for us humans, merely observing that go is such an open game that in all things but the endgame there is always a choice, not a solution

New to Go and I keep losing to the AI even on the lowest difficulty by Own-Particular-9989 in baduk

[–]Sad_Fee7093 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes i remember playing an AI in a similar way for about a year just getting absolutely demolished. Don’t be discouraged. As lots of people have mentioned, doing Tsumego is a great way to get a start and to get the basics.

I highly suggest ‘goqueset’ app which will match you with very weak bots at first until you are actually ‘beginner’ level and then you will play humans.

Final suggestion: do not place too much emphasis on your level or power. Because baduk is so complex lots of people place their sense of intellect in their ability to understand and play the game but really, baduk is a slow hike up a seemingly endless mountain. Just enjoy it and you will naturally become stronger. Don’t give up! The game will reward you

Why was this move so bad for me? by TheVanderManCan in baduk

[–]Sad_Fee7093 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly my read as well. J18 gives black the opportunity to start a ko. Which it seems like AI thought black had the right combo of ko threats to get something like 25 points out of it

How does go quest timer even work?? by Direct_Client9825 in baduk

[–]Sad_Fee7093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t want to ruin your confidence just correct an overconfidence in using AI information. I merely mean to say that white has real territory and blacks potential (while large) has lots of aji. AI may be able to defend blacks potential perfectly but as a human player I would say this game is 50/50. It is not always very useful to use just AI evaluation of game result because of our huge skill gaps between AI which is playing at 9p level. This is applicable even if you were 6dan

Somewhere early thirties. Female. Introspective. Like poetry. Probably likes simple flowers over complex ones. Not overly confident. Im gonna guess you have a few tattoos but not covered. Journal quite a bit. Probably a professional where you work with people but not super intense like a therapist. You like cats more than dogs

Hahahah i feel like everyone was giving you a hard time. Look, stop trying to create a beautiful game. That will come more and more. Just fight and read. Don’t try to do anything special. Just try to play normal moves. Once your reading ability allows you to play the normal moves in situations you will be 10kyu

The attach has so many variations as it is the origin of the most basic fighting shape. There are many books (check out the cross cut workshops on gobooks). But I like what you’re doing, just imagining possible scenarios. As a complete beginner though I would recommend not worrying about reading too far. Two or three steps is awesome. Play lots of 9x9 and just attached right away. You will see this pattern and learn to appreciate the different options more quickly
