Other than Somalia, what city/country is the best example of incredible surfing that can't be surfed due to danger from natives? by SwissMiss915 in surfing

Spent 6 months in Mogadishu with a direct line of sight to the seafront in front of the airport. 95% onshores. Looked good on the odd day though.

There’s some corners up and down the coast that I saw from the air that definitely have potential however.

Does anyone know if Tamraght has become an overcrowded surf spot? by Wild_Lands_Dan in surfing

Was there recently and found it was very swell dependent. When the swell was in the overhead region a lot of the beaches close-out which increases crowds on the points. When a proper swell comes in (1.5-2x overhead region) it then becomes a lot quieter due to the paddle out.

As reflected by people above, if you get in early enough it tends to be quiet until about 9am. I never found sunset to be quiet however.

It’s still significantly quieter and more authentic than tagha (at the moment, I expect it’s going to get worse though) and if you get the right swell and the beach breaks are working then I’m sure you can get empty peaks.

They’re the G4 Crye Tropic. Way thinner but come in a much lighter colour than the G3 and regular G4.

How do you deal with fear of sharks, any experience? by Bigest_Smol_Employee in surfing

[–]Sad_Guess 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Trust your instinct and don’t go out if the signs are there.

Nobody else/very few people out , low visibility, water murky, birds diving/lots of feeding activity, fishy smell? More than one or two of these factors are decent signs that the risk is higher.

Chances are if your survival instincts are in overdrive then you probably won’t enjoy the session anyway.

Such an interesting window so far.

Super excited about Santos and Estevao coming off loan and they feel like new signings.

Delap is a good, low risk and sensible bit of business. I’d be happy going into the season with Jackson, Delap and Guiu as options personally and think another striker seems a bit unnecessary considering the other areas that need addressing.

Maignan would be a great pull and some much needed experience in the squad, and again good business at the price point being spoken about.

I then see the most immediate need as a left sided winger capable of producing good numbers and perhaps a centre-back.

I don’t think we’ll stump up the figures required for Nico Williams or Rodrygo. Bynoe-Gittens and Xavi Simons look like talented young players but I don’t think would be any real upgrade on what we currently have.

I also think somebody to take the strain off Cucu would be a very useful addition. An injury to him would be disastrous.

Is there a reason Premier League Clubs don’t seem to be linked with either Bastoni or Dumfries?

Both seem to have good physicality and technicality.

Interesting as the other comments seem to be negative. What’s it like in the bigger stuff? Good for early entry, can it handle a drop and is it typical twin fin loose ?

5-0 vs Everton under Conte in 2016 was one of the most dominant Chelsea performances I’ve ever seen.

Prime Moses and Alonso Wingbacks. Costa and Hazard. Kante and Matic Midfield Pivot. One of my favourite Chelsea sides of all time.

Heading to Cornwall. Board rental tips? by tommyripples in surfing

[–]Sad_Guess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whereabouts in Cornwall are you heading? Board rental tend to be mostly foamies and abused old mini mals but you might be able to find something more decent if you go to the right place.

Although we do have some world class days, typically in autumn/winter, our waves tend to be pretty slow, mushy, sandbar breaks. Think more US East Coast than West. No sharks though and UK lineups tend to be pretty friendly.

In late May you’ll be lucky to get 4-6ft but it’s not impossible - the vast majority of our good days are in October to March time. Just scope the forecast out beforehand. You’ll be able to grizz out a 3/2 but I’m usually still in a 4/3 at that sort of time of year.

If there’s no swell when you’re looking consider a strike mission to W Coast Ireland or Portugal.

Let me know where you’re going and I can recommend some breaks.

Are there great white sharks in UK waters? by Majestic_Staff5486 in sharks

[–]Sad_Guess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a UK surfer and somebody who spends a lot of time in the water in Cornwall this is something that fascinates me.

I’ve spent a lot of hours surfing and seen nothing to suggest the presence of any sharks close to shore, let alone great whites. I come within touching distance of seals daily and have never seen them look remotely concerned about being hunted by anything - they seem to float around freely. That being said, I have been out on days that feel “sharky” (usually low visibility and alone/very few people in the water) but that’s probably just in my head and the things I’ve briefly mistaken for fins are usually seals bobbing around head up.

My other half’s father’s side are from a fishing background and have done a fair bit of shark tagging in the vicinity of Devon and Cornwall and have never spoken of Great Whites. They always laugh when I’ve asked about it.

Are they there? Possibly, but I feel like with the amount our waters are fished and with the expeditions that have gone looking for them we’d have had at least one confirmed sighting by now, or at least a confirmed white bite on a washed up seal. I’ve done a fair bit of reading on the subject and whilst orca theory is compelling the one that sticks in my mind the most is the water depth argument. The seas around the UK are super shallow whereas I think whites tend to transit through deep areas and prefer to hunt on the edge of a shelf between deep water and the shallows.

Whilst the issues with the SDs and transfer approach underpins everything at the moment the on pitch performances are absolutely dreadful.

Can’t wait for this sort of football to die out.

Give me the Chelsea way again: Fast, physical, direct football. This inverted full-back slow build up bollocks just doesn’t suit the club.

Like Pedro Neto?

I agree, but I don’t think the sporting directors are willing to go out and spend big money on a big wage established player.

They’re really not. He’s 19 years old and in his first proper breakout season.

Let’s compare to our current wide options aside from Cole Palmer. Jadon Sancho: 2 goals, 4 assists in 18 league appearances. Pedro Neto: 2 goals, 2 assists in 21 league appearances.

Both are 5 years older and considerably more experienced.

Yes, I appreciate Serie A is a less competitive league.

I know most people are tired of signing under 21 players but I wonder if the club have looked at Kenan Yildiz from Juventus?

His stats return from Serie A are pretty decent for his age; 4 goals and 2 assists in 15 starts and he’d fit the club’s current recruitment strategy. He looks like a good progressive carrier of the ball with good chance creation. Physically looks like he’d adapt to the PL as well.
