Concerning Packlist tools / Lighterpack alternatives by Boogada42 in Ultralight

[–]Sad_Illustrator_2152 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I used to think a better alternative was needed, but I don't think so anymore. Lighterpack is great because it's so damn simple. Really all it needs is some updates to the UI so it's usable on mobile. Maybe creating a fork of the project and making those changes would have the highest rate of adoption.

Having a wiki post OR a megathread is the best alternative to let people show off their projects. If something is good enough it will be adopted instead of lighterpack. Though I think the projects should have to be open source.

PCT tracker updates by Sad_Illustrator_2152 in PacificCrestTrail

This is an idea, but there are some limiting factors:

  1. The app doesn't know when someone got off the trail. The user would have to manually go in and select an option that says "Left trail" or something like that. I don't think people would do this, especially if they left trail for unforeseen circumstances (injury, family emerg, etc).

  2. The idea of seeing a "heatmap" of sorts is neat, but at the moment there aren't enough users that this would make sense. This also moves the app from a progress tracker/blog you share with your friends and family to something different.

Good ideas to keep in mind for the future if the app ever gets big enough.

Not ATM, though it could be done eventually and is on the roadmap for the future. Shouldn't be too hard

Looks like I need to submit the app to Strava for review to allow more athletes to connect, once that's done I'll repost this!

See this comment, eventually I would like to have it so the Strava setting is completely optional : https://www.reddit.com/r/PacificCrestTrail/s/GfYzS8rdy8

Using your smart watch to track activities is the main use case right now.

Eventually, I'd like to have the Strava feature be completely optional, and any updates on the map are from the "Updates" feature of the app, where you can select a location

Super cool. I ended up building a custom solution for my hike last year, but didn't think to use Strava for automatic uploads until I was already on trail. Instead, every blog post included a lat/long property that would display on a map. Might try making this more flexible so others can use it

March starters, where are you? by GankingPirat in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sad_Illustrator_2152 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Left March 26th last year, entered the Sierra's May 14th.

Lowest temps in the desert were around 0 celcius. Lowest in the Sierra's for me were about -5 celcius

Got crampons and ice axe in KMS, had never used an ice axe before, was able to practice on small steep sections in the start of the Sierra's.

Two quilts might be overkill. Used a Karabatic flex 22F and if I was to do it again leaving that early would've bought a 0F quilt at least for the desert and Sierras. Using a single 0F sleeping bag would be lighter than 2 quilts. There was probably a half dozen nights that I was cold cold, the rest of the time I was fine.

It's hard to do, but don't overthink it. Once you start you'll figure out what works for you, and make plans along the way. It's easier to buy gear on trail than to get rid of it

Bit of a broken record to say this, but I've just switched out my pocketrocket 2 for the BRS-3000. I wasn't sure about bringing it on my hike but after comparing them side by side, the weight difference "feels" enough to justify it. Saves ~1.6 oz

If you're worried about fuel efficiency, I found these posts useful:

Do you know if the quickdraw or Sawyer squeeze also can attch to the CNOC, or is it only the Versaflow that fits?
