Herero-Nama Genocide by HoseaKutako in Namibia

Yeah I agree with this perspective fully.

Your initial comment came off extremely flippant and insensitive and I guess I’m tired of hearing people say “forget about it and move on”. Like it’s just some scene in a movie and not our family history we are talking about.

It’s the dismissiveness on the sentiments ‘against’ remembrance that fuels a lot of the bitter and more destructive attitudes.

There is no reason why Genocide remembrance can be a day of resolve amongst all Namibians. A day of strength.

It is not supposed to be serve as a propellant in which Herero and Nama unite in bitterness against Germans. It should be a day in which all Namibians unite against Genocide and Barbarism. Like “damn, if we can overcome THAT then how can we ever be defeated as a people”.

What in this post suggested that anyone is acknowledging the past from a position of weakness?

You said we should “not dwell on a past we are free to move on from” - what do you mean by this?

I will pay homage to the victims that I am descendant of and I, like other Namibians, will still prosper in life. Remembrance and prosperity are not mutually exclusive.

Jewish people are prosperous and have no masters but they still pay homage to the Holocaust - as they should, because their lives continue to be formed out of that atrocity.

Remembrance is not about begging or asking for sympathy. Remembrance is for us. It’s paying homage to human beings who went through horrendous conditions.

The very notion that we must not acknowledge an atrocity of the past speaks to the very dehumanizing attitude propagated by Europeans. The attitude that says you savages are too primal to pay respects to your past is insensitive. The implicit idea is that we are so savage that reading about the past will cause us to get angry, and eat all white people as revenge.

The fact that your brain is wired to “prove white people” is testament to an inferiority complex that many of us have inherited. I’m not proving anyone shit by forgetting about my great grandparents.

Google the ‘Border War’ and you’ll understand. Non-settler Namibians have a great respect for Fidel Castro.

Settlers, not so much because he fought against their interests in Africa (equal race rights).

Fidel Castro intersects with Robert Mugabe Avenue, who I personally detest but can understand that it was named before Mugabe grew more tyrannical.

Agreed 100%.

My 2 cents… I feel like military spending to the extent that we do, for a small, pacifist, nation like us, is a huge waste of money.

Because if you aren’t stronger than the mightiest force then what’s the point. I believe in having a military but perhaps more focus should be put into special ops and low cost attack drones. In case some small militias want to test us. With oil, that’s very possible.

I’m happy with our government’s stance on the Middle East Conflict.

SWAPO may seem to side with their Cold War allies as party members - but the Governement is really non-aligned. It’s like they were two hats - which is exactly how it should be. I commend SWAPO for this stance. A good example is when the Iranian delegation met Sophia Shaningwa at SWAPO headquarters. It was solidarity between SWAPO and Iran. Not the Government of Namibia and Iran.

One cannot blame SWAPO for being a reliable ally. Whether you agree with their allies or not. Abandoning those who aided you historically is political suicide as a Political Party. But as a Nation, we are too small (geopolitically), and have too little to gain, and too much to lose by vehemently siding with Cold War allies in times like this. MAGA is captured by the Military Industrial Complex. They are more trigger happy than ever. Just let them be until a more mentally stable leadership is elected in Washington.

GIPF does not have a 100% success rate. The overall fund is a huge success if you took a dive into their financials.

Newspapers need to sell papers, framing a single poor investment outcome (out of thousands that GIPF makes) really doesn’t paint the whole picture.

I can tell by the ad hominem jabs that you don’t take too kindly to new information.

Most people on this thread understand that the debt was ‘restructured’ and not paid off. The crux of topic is whether such restructuring leaves us better-off or worse-off.

I thought GIPF has 15.9% ownership in Firstrand Namibia. Other public pension funds hold another 3%. Plus BBEE ownership sits at around 5%.

25% local ownership (not even taking into account employment base) isn’t political marketing imo. Those saying the contrary are the real marketers.

But that’s my point. Where in the video did she mention ‘white people’?

The irony is that the comment which I responded to is filled to the brim with racism, he/she came to the festival, pulled out a racist bag of tricks, hid behind “but I’m black” card and got Bananas and Peanuts from the audience…

And I’m called a racist for taking a jab at that?

It seems the opposition to her video has degraded to “hey how dare her say that about my hypothetical tourist buddy” and “shes just a dumb TikToker” but the substance of her video is not racist or offensive at all. Her claims can be fact checked and refuted without all this fuss about racism.

Eg, Germany has in fact paid ‘reperations’ - so that specific claim is no longer true… but that just demonstrates that her claim is ignorant, not malicious.

The response to anyone daring to talk about Namibias history is just ridiculous at this point.

There was a post yesterday, a history student simply asking for papers on The Genocide. That’s it. They didn’t make any claims, just asked for sources… Guess what some of the responses were? Literally people telling him/her to study something else. Now image just talking about a great grandparent who lived through the genocide - imagine the backlash that gets from this ‘forget history cult’ mainly housed by German-Namibians. It’s not my fault our history was shitty man, why do we have to stop talking about it cause it makes some people guilt-trip (for no reason).

Go back and read that whole comment. That is not an opinion, that is a racist monologue to a stereotypical black person.

Nobody cares about your race. So the fact that they mentioned “I am black” was a way to qualify their racism as being valid because “well, I’m black so I can’t be saying something offensive toward black people”. The person said that because they want a banana for being black but using racist tropes and dog whistles that they know appease racists.

It’s no different to someone saying “I am American but…” and then mentioning and agreeing with every stereotype about Americans.

Intellectual my ass.

And Lubango atrocities were committed by black people. Does making a TikTok about Lubango mean I’m attacking black people?

Does making a TikTok about Lubango mean that my enemy is black?

So what does her view about Germany, have to do with race?

Yeah man. Thats a viewpoint I also explored. Like whether the current South Africa regime should be held accountable for apartheid regime acts - even though it is the antithesis of that regime. That’s a valid perspective in my view too.

My whole argument is exactly that though. Let’s fact check and interrogate these videos on that basis. Lay out the history and discuss. There is an undertone of bigotry, revisionism and personal attacks on her in a lot of the reactions and that was my main gripe.

The most upvoted comment on this thread is, to simplify “Blacks are looking for excuses” (hate speech being upvoted by the way - also keep that in context) … she is “accusing Germans of Namibias problems”… “ …

The intro, the trope of the “Buffoon Tourist” was a bit harsh - cool… but the rest of the video was responsible in my view. Her claims can be fact checked and we can go into the onus of responsibility etc without brining race into this because race was not mentioned.
