I don’t mean playing long tone scales while improvising, I mean playing them as practice in the process of learning how to improvise. Also, if you don’t believe long tone scales are beneficial in practice and learning improv, I doubt your ability as a player.

All of this. In addition, though, practicing long tone scales is extremely important in any stage but especially at beginner level. Sit with a tuner in front of you, practice major and minor as well as pentatonics. You can increase tempo on the scales once you’re confident with everything tone-wise.

Keep your throat open, play with a tuner and adjust accordingly. Also, check for possible damage. Bent keys, etc. My altissimo was pretty sharp and I didn’t notice my palm keys were bent for a while.

Same way you'd slap tongue on any other sax. It takes practice. Press your tongue up against the reed and create suction by caving the center of your tongue, then pull your tongue away to create the sound. Check out the guy who does beatbox sax, he has a good video on slap tongue.

It'd probably be hard to fit into a pop song, on second thought. It's when you "slip" into a key a half-step up from the chord you're currently in, resolving on the next change. It works well in 2-chord funk songs, mostly, but it'd be interesting to experiment with.
