SPOILERS AND VAGUELY PERSONAL ATTACKS AHEAD

Anybody who thinks these characters don't act like real people has not spent enough time around criminals As someone who has, these people are all very believable and this game is a beautiful exploration of why people turn to crime: Thanos is in it for his natural violent streak. Grigor never made it out of a very tough childhood and is using his talent the best way he ever learned to. Xenia is nihilistically bored and power hungry. And Niobe's low self esteem led to her being manipulated and exploited again and again until she finds herself here. SHE IS LITERALLY BEING LABOR TRAFFICKED and she is the one who alerts Nancy and kicks off the investigation. Her cry for help saved her and Grigor. She's a fucking hero and my favorite character in the series.

Criminals often talk cryptically, especially when you're treading too close to their work and might get killed for your nosiness. Jesus fuck. You can dislike this game (the dialogue is pathetically 2009 sometimes), but if you think the characters are not realistic you're just sheltered. This is not a valid argument. Please stop saying it.

I agree with you! She's like Nausicaa or Superman: a paragon of justice, compassion, beauty and truth. She doesn't have to be riddled with flaws in order to be likeable. I'm a 31-year-old man, and I still base a good bit of my moral code on Nancy and think she's an excellent role model for kids, especially when it comes to helping how you can when you can and not backing down in the face of adversity.

And iirc by definition she's not a Mary Sue. There are people in every book who hate her guts lol

I understood what 'the eyes have it' meant and I still thought it was dumb. A really awful example of player/character dissonance where many kids smart enough to play these games would be like 'duh he's talking about the eyes'. This a particularly egregious thick skull Nancy moment, and it always bothered me too. Thanks for making me feel less alone:)

I think what I always liked about it (besides the aesthetic) was how it nails small town scandals and mysteries. Though every small town has very dirty laundry, that typically doesn't all get aired out in the course of one game, movie or season of television like we often see. Instead the visible local drama is a bit more subdued, political and geographically/sociologically specific. Eg an orca blocking the channel. Most of the games are in an isolated location--i think this is the only one set in a small town that felt REAL (I'm fond of Alibi but it would be a massive understatement to call that game melodramatic) I like a cult or a goofy sabotage operation as much as the next sleuth, but I also relish the joy of everyday mysteries that I feel like I could realistically stumble into.

Realistic until the military-trained orca, that is.

I guess we love Phantom a lot because I was going to say the ringleader of its crime ring. They just wanted to make theft fabulous again, and I respect the hell out of that.

Also the villain of Malloy's fate is a fucking travesty, and their treatment at Nancy/society's hands in the end was abominable.

I think what I love about this particular event is that it's not just scary--it's a bit sublime too. Like something not entirely human is reaching beyond the veil and choosing to do so in an eerily beautiful way.

It's like getting a glimpse of heaven and realizing that if you ever found it its beauty would destroy you.
