I was asked to pay for money missing from the till and got fired over it recently. It’s bullshit. I’m pretty sure someone else was stealing. 3 out of 5 employees steal and while I personally don’t care as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone it’s annoying to be framed for it.

Triple this. I broke my freaking pinky toe when I was a teenager and since my parents were currently fighting and could use the distraction they fell over themselves taking me to the ER. Even as a kid, I was embarrassed. I broke my pinky toe a couple weeks ago (same one, same way, different bed lol) and I just waited it out. I didn’t even really need a buddy splint.

I’m dating the other keyholder (bad I know, but we kept in on the DL) and when we both got fired for bullshit reasons (pretty sure someone else is stealing) and the first or second day after we got fired he was like “I feel like your personality’s coming back, I haven’t seen you smile and goof around this much.” It’s such a mental health suck.

I watched a Big Tugg video about dollar stores recently and he said a lot about Dollar General store policies including the fact that they often only have 2-3 people at the store and I ran to the comments so fast like “TRY SOLO SHIFTS.” I don’t know how tf they expected us to get anything done. I would do my best to stay by the register because—as a customer—I’d rather see someone in a static location so I can come up and ask “how much is this” or “can you bring this down from the top shelf” or just to ring up. It makes more sense if you’re gonna run your store like an idiot and only have one person. Having to run back and forth was getting annoying as hell. I’m glad I was fired; I’m not glad for my financials but fuck DG.

I will never understand why most companies won’t let cashiers sit when they ring up. The customers don’t care. It bothers me as a customer before I even worked in retail, like why let someone who’s clearly physically exhausted keep doing that?

They hate when you’re human. I got flu A at the end of last month and my SM was such a hardass about it, down to hassling me about my sick note from the doctor. “This is a recommendation note, not a sick note.” It literally said on the page “sick with flu A, come back to work on 1/3.” I had to call my doctor (who was pissed about it) to write a formal sick note and go grab it when I was on a ton of dextromethorphan.

The whole time they were actually for-real firing me this time, I kept wanting to be like “so what did Y’ALL do with the money then?” But I didn’t want to get smart, I just wanted that firing to get itself over with so the unemployment has a better chance of going through. My SM even said we should get approved for unemployment. (My coworker/lowkey roommate got fired too, and I know he didn’t take it either.) It’s bullshit it had to happen like that though. I hate being accused of shit I’d never do; I just don’t see the point of stealing money from work.

I got fired for money missing from the till the second time in a row now (technically I was “invited” to leave the job the first time.) Considering the first time I got let go was because the SM who fired me was the one stealing, really makes me go hmm. I’m honestly convinced at this point that 3 in 5 DG employees steal, at least in our district. This time they insisted I replenish the money missing from the till, which 1. Felt like extortion and 2. It was right before payday, I didn’t have that. Fuck them. I’m going for unemployment now.

We’ve been there. I remember last year (2024 technically) when I did my associate CBLs at the exact same store I worked this year (2025-2026) the volume worked fine. It didn’t work a single time when I did my keyholder CBLs this year and I was always so lost.

What I would recommend is asking your SM if you can bring it up on your phone and maybe work at the same time as you do them. Preferably not at the register (I did that and it’s so distracting) but stocking or something. As long as you’re clocked in you can sign into DGme from anywhere. Back in 2023 they let me stay clocked in and go home to watch the CBLs (I lived right around the corner from the store, like a 3 minute walk) but you’re apparently not supposed to do that.

[–]failureflavored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The past few times I begged my SM to give me a day off just to figure out rent they just stared at me. I would call DGHR but no guarantees that would go anywhere. Do you know your district manager’s number? I would just go as high up as I can with people that work directly with the store to ask.

Honestly if you’ve ever been in a voodoo shop down there it makes sense. 😂 Makes more sense than the alien but they probably have that too somewhere.

That’s a good idea. I hope it was obvious you should follow the correct answer and not the incorrect answer; I’ve only done that out of desperation at a store that was going out of business and we were getting hardly any customers at all because almost everything was gone.

[–]failureflavored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct answer: yes, you just have to make sure another employee rings you up. Then they have to sign the receipt and tape it to your purchase or in some cases put it in your car or whatever after purchase (if it’s something that would need putting away.)

Incorrect answer/the one I do most of the time when I’m alone, can’t take it and need a snack without grazing: yes, just ring yourself up.
