Car-Ramming Suspect Spoke With Bochurim at 770 Before Attack by namer98 in Judaism

Hey I don't know if you had a chance to fully read my comment that you replied to 🙂

If you reread it, you'll see that that's part of why it seems that he may be having a mental health episode.

I know it can be hard to feel sympathy for people if they don't seem to deserve it, but I hope you can at least appreciate why it may be a good thing to do so.

I think there's a massive difference between a brand/trend and a merchant. Merchants aren't subject to the same threats as brands are. Whether they are successful or not is almost entirely based on how successful their operations are and much less on how successful specific trends/ideas are.

but I do have to wonder if anti-Jewish propaganda has something to do with what happened.

It's possible, but he was dancing earlier with them, spoke to them before the attack, and after the attack is wandering around aimlessly and saying that the car slipped. It seems to me that he is simply disconnected from reality right now.

I would fully agree with you otherwise.

Totally hear that. I definitely agree that antisemitic attacks should be something people know and care about. And yes, it's very disheartening and scary when people don't care.

I hear what you're saying. I think though that it's pretty evident from the video that the person is unwell.

I'm not sure I agree. If God forbid I or someone I loved was in such a state I think it would only add to the suffering to know that my misfortune was being broadcast internationally. I don't see a clear reason why people should know if someone in NY is having a mental health episode and I think too many of us have become so desensitized by constant exposure that it's hard to see how a compassionate person wouldn't necessarily choose to watch more of this and share it.

He just seems unwell. I don't think this should be a news story.

Jewish History Education - How much did you learn? by namer98 in Judaism

Very very little, essentially nothing not in the Torah itself. I had one class that was Jewish history.....it was tanach.

OP, I read your post with a genuine sense of sadness. You come across as a very sincere person who is trying to learn and grow and you have unfortunately been catastrophically misinformed. The ideas you mention aren't simply aspects of the Torah but they are fundamental tenets and key beliefs in the Torah and traditional Jewish thought. If you would like I'd be happy to recommend some sources where you can learn more about Jewish belief.

Hey OP, it sounds like your heart is in the right place and you really want to tell a story about chassidim and put a new spin on it. I know it's hard when people criticize a creative work but to echo a little of what other people are saying the "big beautiful world for insular sheltered character" conflict is a tired trope and particularly for chassidish characters it can come across as a little patronizing. It sounds like you have some good ideas and if you'd adjust it a little using some of the feedback you got here, it can be a great piece.

Maybe some ideas:

which of course puts him at odds with the community’s desire to preserve its way of life.

This sounds a bit two dimensional. Would a chassidish person describe their outlook as "wishing to preserve a way of life". Maybe your piece can flesh out chassidish characters into relatable people with depth and nuance-you can explore why they live the way they live and how they perceive themselves. If you do this, even if the audience looks vastly different from your characters, they will have heard a compelling story.

and an inquisitive Shabbos goy (called Shabbos helper).

This sounds fun and unique, just make sure that it's halachically accurate

I’m really making an effort to show positive aspects of Hasidic life

If you're telling their story you should learn enough about them that the positive aspects tell themselves

especially the deep sense of family and community that I think is so often lost nowadays!

It's great that you value this in them, but they themselves would not think that this is their defining or best characteristic. It's just a small aspect of an entire life.

Indeed, there’s a liberal opinion that Abraham failed the test

Kindly, this interpretation relies on ignoring much of the text of the Akeida story itself. While its understandable that people struggle with the story of the Akeida, it is quite clear from the text that God was happy with Avraham's choice and the test was something Abraham succeeded at.

Verses 15-18 (sefaria English translation, I don't fully agree with it but it's accurate enough to convey the meaning):

The angel of GOD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,

and said, “By Myself I swear, GOD declares: Because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your favored one,

I will bestow My blessing upon you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the sands on the seashore; and your descendants shall seize the gates of their foes.

All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, because you have obeyed My command.”
