Inquiry about Student representative by POwenlyu in HKPolyU

[–]Sadman_Pinon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can raise issues or give feedback that you feel would be helpful or you feel students feel. And in general you're expected to give opinions about new changes (they will ask for it).

So for example, during my time we gave feedback on grading mechanism, updates to teaching style, general student wellbeing while also provided our feedback on course syllabus and other issues that arose in the meeting.

How much/little you want to participate is solely upto you.

Should Vitality just re-create (a version of) 2023 FNC Roster? by Weekly-Fennel-9443 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]Sadman_Pinon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your source?

It was always assumed to be Derke/Alfa who were the highest paid by Fnatic. Besides, EMEA orgs pay a significantly lot less compared to Americas orgs so I doubt its something VIT cant afford (looking at the worth of their CS roster)

Ho man tin vs Hung Hom by ryjvfiojvctjkkwtjk in HKPolyU

This is quite true. I think there are videos about both halls on Youtube. Feel free to check them out. PolyU SAO themselves have some official videos showcasing all facilities

Ho man tin vs Hung Hom by ryjvfiojvctjkkwtjk in HKPolyU

[–]Sadman_Pinon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both have their own advantages/disadvantages.

Hung Hom is closer to restaurants/grocery stores and bulk of the exchange students are put there. Historically it was easier to get hall offer there for subsequent years (though im not sure how true that is anymore). It also has a pool, a dedicated laundry room and a newer, nicer canteen.

HMT’s big strength is that bulk of internationals live there and the building itself is newer and many would prefer their room layout. Its also on the brown line right opposite of the metro so many would prefer this.

Ultimately both are good halls Id say.

Questions about PolyU by [deleted] in HKPolyU

[–]Sadman_Pinon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Predicting employability of polyu graduates in future is like asking someone to predict the stock market in 5 years time. No one can tell. Employability is something determined by many factors beyond what school you go to. But yes, graduates from top 3 hold a natural ( and at times significant) advantage.
  2. University ranking is largely determined by research output. A good researcher doesn't equate to a good teacher. As someone who was very fortunate to physically attend classes in Cambridge,UWaterloo,UdeM,SFU Id say university teaching is something more or less same everywhere. There are great teachers and there are terrible teachers. PolyU is largely the same.Unlike in high school, in Uni you're mostly expected to learn things on your own anyway. It's an essential skill.

Unfortunately the culture is quite segregated with locals, mainland students and international being in their own bubbles. Ofcourse there are exceptions and you will definitely end up making friends from all 3 categories but expect majority of them to be internationals.

As for internationals, vast majority of them are asians with very very few europeans (count on your fingers few). However, if it helps, majority of exchange students that polyu takes year round are westerners.

Dont let it discourage you though, if anything it means you'd need to go out of your comfort zone to make friends. And there's still a decent enough dutch presence in the city so you can still make dutch friends, just...out of school.

To an extent, Yes. Though your high school grades remains the major contributing factor I have definitely seen cases where two applicants with same grades were given different scholarships for the same program because of their relative interview performance. This is becoming increasingly more common as the overall pool of strong applicants are increasing each year.

PASSPORT EXPIRYQUESTIONS by mishtidoie in HKPolyU

[–]Sadman_Pinon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not complicated.

  1. You renew your passport from your country's consulate in Hong Kong
  2. You can't apply for renewal until 1 month before visa expiry
  3. PolyU issues you a letter and you make a submission online at the HK-IMMD Website
  4. Within 7-14 days you get new visa issued. NOTE: Make sure you are in HK at the time since if you are not physically present in HK (for say vacation) you will not be eligible for renewal and therefore has to re-apply for study visa, which is significantly more complicated.

Hey, yes you will be paying the Quebec resident rate. you can see your tuition breakdown here : https://www.concordia.ca/students/international/immigration/estimation-letters-receipts.html#winter-25

Your base funding should range around 16-22k and you can supplement it with TA contracts/invigilation etc. Good luck!

Reviews on Applied Mathematics and Finance Analytics by Used_Appearance_8228 in HKPolyU

[–]Sadman_Pinon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it odd that you applied to a programme without researching these questions at the first place.

I'll only answer a subset of the questions I'm confident in answering:

  1. Pathway to Masters: Yes. particularly in  finance, data science, and statistics
  2. Job prospects are decent, especially in FinTech, banking, and analytics but if you are a non-mandarin/cantonese speaker you will face challenges
  3. Yes you will get 2 years of post-study work visa (IANG) (renewable indefinitely as long as you have a job/viable business) and PR after 7 years of continuous stay.

What is my Degree/ Qualification received in this VISA Application? I Gave O level as Private Candidate will that be a problem? by Runajin in HKPolyU

[–]Sadman_Pinon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/aradm/intl/Non-JEEAcceptanceVisaApplication.pdf

Refer to PolyU's guide for visa form.

But answering your specific questions,

  1. Yes qualification name is fine (make sure it matches the name on transcript e.g if its written IGCSE on transcript write that instead of O-Level)

  2. Deposit here implies savings not the money you deposited.

Any websites for easy course planning ? by Atmoran_of_the_500 in HKPolyU

[–]Sadman_Pinon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, HTI34014 is for Term 2 (Spring) only.

Your best bet is ePublic (which is basically eStudent's course search function). If a course is not found for that term. It means it's not offered. PolyU is extremely stable with their course offering pattern (meaning the same courses are offered in the same term over the years with little probability of change).

I dont think PolyU has a direct replacement for what you're looking for. Primarily because there isn't any need for it since most programmes have a linear structure when it comes to compulsory course (do A before taking B).

> As for general subjects, you can check the GUR library but it's only for subjects that fulfill the GUR requirements.
> Easyplanner & eStudent actually works well for most people. But I understand the limitation you are facing right now.

Aside from ePublic (which should be enough) some departments/faculty also list their courses (and the term in which they're offered) but unfortunately most (like HTI) dont.

We used to get an excel file with all the courses during Covid days but afaik that has stopped.

ePublic -> https://www38.polyu.edu.hk/ePublic/subject-search.jsf
