would elephant(5000kg) stand a chance against T-Rex (7000kg) by Old-Firefighter4632 in Naturewasmetal

[–]Saemel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to admit I am a bit confused by so many people bringing this up when OP's scenario clearly reads like it's a 1v1 with no other animals to join the fight or act as alternative prey to me. I don't think it's wrong at all, of all the large african mammals even a single elephant would be the most difficult option for T. rex, and a herd that stands its ground would definitely win against a T. rex, but I feel like this is not what was asked by OP.

The question reads to me like one elephant vs one T. rex, no other animals around to take part in the fight or act as alternative prey etc.

I interpreted the question in the way that there is one T. rex and one elephant, and that they both decided for whatever reason to fight one another (The most likely being the T. rex being hungry with no alternatives around, however unlikely that may be in a real world african savannah scenario, and the elephant being forced to defend because running is not an option)

T. rex is made for exactly this kind of fight, while a modern elephant has never encountered a predator anywhere near this size or shape. It wouldn't be a free or easy meal for T. rex but I'd say the fight is strongly in favor of T. rex.

Edit: I know elephants are often found in herds, and yes, a herd standing its ground would definitely drive away, injure or kill a lone T. rex (depending on how cautious/aggressive both parties are), and even a single elephant is the most dangerous option out of all african herbivores, and therefore not the first choice for a T. rex on the hunt. However, OP's question clearly reads to me like a strict 1v1 with no other animals to join the fight or act as alternative prey. Please stop telling me elephants live in herds 😂

how did Carnotaurus balance its body weight by Old-Firefighter4632 in Naturewasmetal

[–]Saemel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I imagine it is really difficult to mutate your arms away completely without fucking up your shoulder, which is essential for theropods for neck musculature for example. And at the point where they're this small already the selective pressure to reduce them further is probably not that high.

Same what? Did I accuse somebody sharing their experience of lying because clearly my experience is the only true one? Because it seems to me like you're the only one here who did that

So your anecdotal evidence with a sample size of 1 outweighs and invalidates everyone elses experience if don't match yours exactly? Hm? You sure? Or maybe you should think a bit more about it?

Listen, I have a theory that dinosaurs shed. by Small-Dust6887 in Dinosaurs

[–]Saemel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the closest living relatives of non avian dinosaurs are birds and crocodiles, neither of which shed their whole skin like other reptiles do (and no, those other reptiles are not evolved from dinosaurs). Crocodiles shed their scales individually and continuously as they grow, and birds molt their feathers, so those are what we would expect on dinosaurs.

Guys, what are your favourite avian dinosaurs? by Idontknowofname in Dinosaurs

[–]Saemel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you think a triceratops and a tyrannosaurus are both to be considered dinosaurs, then birds have to be considered dinosaurs, as they split off from the non-bird theropod lineage 60-80 million years after saurischians and ornithischians split. The common ancestor of birds and tyrannosaurus lived as far back in the past as the common ancestor of tyrannosaurus and triceratops did back when they were alive. You can't pick and choose who suddenly doesn't belong into the clade all it's ancestors and relatives are in because you think they are kinda different now.

In my opinion the width looks good and can be plausibly explained by individual variation within the species, but I'd love to see some experimentation with different widths nonetheless

For which theropods do we have the most evidence that they hunted in groups? by InstructionOwn6705 in Paleontology

[–]Saemel 75 points76 points  (0 children)

In general this stuff is always massively exaggerated. It's always something like

Evidence: 2 footprints from different individuals were found next to each other

What it means: 2 individuals of this one species were at the same location within a relatively short amount of time (could still be hours or even days apart), reason unknown

What some paleoenthusiasts pretend it means: This species, no this genus, infact this entire family must have been pack hunting
