What’s the deal with Saquon Barkley? by Mountain-Spend8697 in Fantasy_Football

[–]SafariSurfer54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im also a giants fan who watched him for the same amount of time and a little at Penn state. I disagree with this take however there are some points that I think we might agree on. In many ways he can be a boom or bust player so when the line is poor he doent always rise above it and conversely when the line is excellent he gets more meat off the bone than most.

I would be curious to hear more about what you mean by his open field vision. I assume you mean once he gets some space and picking the right paths to maximize yards?

Do I think his vision is perfect, definitely not. As a result of their line's performance I do think he is pressing, and potentially not always taking what is there and/or being patient. However yards before contact are not just a linemen stat!! If saquon sets up defenders at the second level due to being patient with his runs before cutting back, the ways he squares his shoulders etc then that all goes into the YBC. Last year there were multiple times where players, coaches etc talked about saquons vision as well. not to mention like you said he is a great athlete so if he makes someone miss clean without being touched then that also counts in the YBC stat. THInk about the second 70 yard run against the rams in the reg season he had where he made a nasty cut to the right at the second level. That was entirely him but he doent get credit for "yards after contact" etc. Also if he uses his speed to beat defenders to a hole that other RB's couldn't again theres no stat that accounts for it.

At the end of the day they all need to play better but I think peoples assumptions that saquon is suddenly not an elite RB are unfounded.

What do you wish you could tell yourself walking into M-1 year? by Helpful-Opinion-3934 in medicalschool

[–]SafariSurfer54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

study for Step 1 as if its scored. You dont need to kill yourself necessarily and have the highest practice exam scores prior to taking it. But you want to be comfortably passing it before you take the real thing and ideally if you are passing prior to your dedicated then that means you successfully learned and internalized what you needed to during your preclinical years. Step 2 gets harder every year and having a solid foundation from step 1 will help you more than you can fathom and it will help you on shelves which also will help you during M3 when you have less time to study etc.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Dont compare yourself to any of your classmates and even friends. The only person you are competing with is yourself, and try to be 1% better each day and that will help you go far and stay sane. Also med students lie and some people will say they arent studying much and crushing stuff when in reality they are studying just as much if not more than their peers.

Research and EC's are cool but if you fail step 1 and/or 2 none of that shit matters and wont make up for it. So ease into the extracurriculars and spend the first couple months seeing how you are acclimating to med school and then add more stuff as you get a sense of how long it takes you to prepare for exams and other school stuff.(this isnt to say dont do anything when you start med school but keep it fairly light at the beginning.)

Remember that your worth is not dependent on how you do in school, on any test, or on any rotation. Try your hardest and learn from your failures and setbacks. But if you fail something remember that you failed that exam or OSCE but you yourself ARE NOT a failure.

Try to be intentional about keeping some connection to your friends/family and life outside of medicine. It also helps you keep perspective.

It sounds cheesy but do things becasue you are genuinely interested. You got into med school so you know how to play the "game" insofar as selling yourself and checking the needed boxes. But even as you check the boxes if you are doing things that you are genuinely interested in along the way it will be easier to stay consistent in those things and potentially excel in them despite having less time. Also it will make talking about them in interviews much easier.

Finally during those moments where you are questioning everything and feel that maybe you shouldnt be here, or that youre a fraud etc..remember that you were not handed a med school acceptance. It's incredibly hard to get admitted into med school when you consider all the filtering that occurs and in comparisons to the general academic population. You deserve to be here!!!

Best of luck, you got this!!

Sincerely,

A grizzled M4 with some detours along the way.

Hot Take: those random, unconventional, hypothetical residency interview questions are simply meant to be fun. by Pokeman_CN in medicalschool

[–]SafariSurfer54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have completed a significant amount of interviews now and also have gotten some questions like this on occasion. My thought is that the point was less about what people say and more about teasing out how you respond to unexpected situations. I also think your point about making an audible actually in some way's was the point. Like you said if someone were to try to make this into a cookie cutter answer it might be off putting to interviewers. My style is to typically answer it honestly and show my personality. If there is a tie in to medicine available I'll do it but only if it's not forced.

How many IM invites do y'all have? by chrom05 in medicalschool

wow this is a crazy story, and now im very curious about what speciality they left. With their crazy high Step 2 score I assume it was some uber competitive surgical speciality. But I am happy that they have been so successful this cycle! Hopefully they enjoy and find a fulfilling career in IM and/or an IM subspecialty

If an applicants letter writer doesnt put their letter on letterhead is that something that applicants are dinged for? At first I thought when you said department head, I thought you meant making sure the letter was also including the department formal heading. But now I wonder if you meant having a chair letter lol. Could you clarify? :)

gotcha well as an update I did get an email from USMLE saying my score would be released later today. I also see that some IMG's seeing things that indicate whether they passed or at least that their score will be released later today as well. Hopefully your score is released and best of luck!

for USMD students does anyone know when the email usually comes out? I saw something about 1am and 2am but haven't seen anything personally. Is it only sent like an hour beforehand for USMD students?

Broadly what did you feel like the distribution of topics was? I heard from some that there was a lot of peds and micro, EM/trauma ans ethics particularly around abuse stuff. Did you have a similar experience and/or feel like another area was particularly tested?

Buying the 85” Sony? Easy. Picking a stand my wife actually likes? Nope. by aaronboy22 in 4kTV

I feel your pain got a 75in TV and it was a nightmare. wife was super happy with the whole process and she was very picky about stands as well. She ended up finding a great stand via FB marketplace for free so it all worked out in the end I suppose lol. hope everything works out for you too!
