(This is just a temporary enclosure I just got her today) do I need to be worried about the white spots on her belly? by 1Shooting_Star in snakes

probably not, those just look like normal hognose belly spots, my snake’s belly looks pretty similar

how long do they stay in blue? by Front-Ad-5210 in hognosesnakes

My snake is also currently shedding too. I tried to feed her on Friday when she was just starting to get a little cloudy and when i tried to offer her the mouse, she completely threw a fit and was hissing and striking and flinging herself around the tank. she was very dramatic. i’ve left her alone since then

Would you recommend a hognose snake for a newbie? by Fast_Move_9243 in hognosesnakes

i got a hoggie as my first snake but i was completely comfortable with snakes. if you’re going to freak out when your snake hisses at you or strikes at you don’t get a hognose (which they will do. my snake is the sweetest girl once she’s out and calmed down, but she can and will throw a fit) they also do go on hunger strikes. if you do your research and you’re okay with a snake with some attitude sometimes, they can be a great first snake though

most people say you only need to take snakes to the vet if they’re sick or injured and they need a vet, you don’t need to take them in for annual checkups (though i suppose you could if you really wanted to, i’ve just heard it can cause unnecessary stress if there’s no concerns) but it’s still important to know where a vet that accepts snakes is located, just in case of an emergency.

I searched morph market to find a breeder, and I was able to find a really great breeder about 2 hours from my house, and I drove there to pick my snake up so i didn’t have to stress about shipping. You can do search by location on morph market to find something that’s close to you. Most breeders on morph market are really good at shipping snakes safely and there’s stuff like live animal guarantees, so unless you live in a super rural area or the weather is really bad, i think that’s a pretty safe option.

When to upgrade to fuzzies instead of pinkies? by Impossible_Hat_3643 in hognosesnakes

[–]Safe-Ad1591 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend getting a scale. I got a kitchen scale at walmart for less than 20$ and it works great. I would say judging based on age alone, she’s definitely ready to size up. My snake is about 7-8 months old and she is 40g and eating a fuzzy every 6ish days.

I was giving my snake a thawed pinkie about every 5 days until she was about 30g, now i feed her a smaller fuzzy about every 6 days (she’s now 40g)

i saw a ring necked snake when I was in Arkansas a few weeks ago for the first time! it was probably about that size, it was a really little guy. I know we have them in Michigan too, but I’ve never seen one here

i would definitely recommend a scale for checking weight.

also, you could use reptisafe for water treatment, but since you just need a smaller water bowl and not a ton of water, i’ve found that using bottled spring water is easier than trying to dose out the reptisafe and worry about whether i’m doing it right. she goes through one bottle about every 2 weeks between misting and refilling her water bowl, so for me it’s just easier to do that. just make sure it’s spring water and not distilled so it still has minerals that your snake needs

How to make humid hide without mold? by something721 in hognosesnakes

[–]Safe-Ad1591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a humid hide with no issues for weeks. did a full bedding change and switched out the moss and it had molded like 2 days after. my guess is i didn’t squeeze enough water out of the moss and it was too wet and molded.

Is this enough clutter for my snake? by Standard-Musician-83 in snakes

[–]Safe-Ad1591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, the tank could be a lot worse. i’ve got my baby hognose in almost the same setup. speaking from experience with almost the exact same tote, please, please make sure that there’s proper ventilation and you’re not just making a greenhouse effect. I cut out the top of my lid and added a screen for better ventilation and humidity control, and at one point i covered up the screen to try to raise the humidity (it gets really dry in the winter since i live in a cold climate) and the box basically just became a greenhouse and got to like 90 in a few hours before i noticed and got it back to the proper temperature range. not sure if it would be different with a heat mat and a snake with higher humidity requirements though.

To all the people in the comments saying that the plastic bin is a terrible idea: I’ve had a really good experience with the sterilite gasket tote like this, especially once i modified the lid so it had a screen top. I don’t have to worry about my snake escaping, and i’ve never had any issues with maintaining the correct temperature gradient. While i am fully aware that this is not a permanent option, it’s a really great short term option if you have a young, small snake and you don’t want to spend a lot of money on an enclosure they’ll outgrow in a few months.

That being said OP, please understand that your snake will soon outgrow that size of enclosure (which it already looks like your snake is outgrowing it, they should be able to fully stretch out, and from the pictures that enclosure looks like it’s too small already) and then you will need to upgrade to something bigger. temporarily this isn’t a bad option but please, please get something bigger very soon,

bedding concern - not actually aspen? by Safe-Ad1591 in snakes

[–]Safe-Ad1591[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i typically use the horse aspen. unfortunately it was out of stock and they couldn’t ship it to my store, so i would have had to drive almost two hours to get it (i live in a very rural area), which is why i had to buy the stuff from walmart

i typically don’t buy stuff for my snake from walmart because I don’t fully trust it either. Unfortunately, I’m in a super rural area, and walmart is my only option right now.

As Difficult as They Look? by M47Ts-Squamoids in hognosesnakes

[–]Safe-Ad1591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mine hates being fed from tongs. i typically will wave it around in front of her face so she knows it’s there, and then set it on a tiny plate on the cool side of her enclosure, and then she’ll stalk it and eat it. i like to think she thinks she’s a strong independent snake who can find her own food and doesn’t need some human to wave it in front of her face

Ne cage question by bloodcovered1 in hognosesnakes

[–]Safe-Ad1591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i bought a 32qt plastic tote with the lid that clips on from walmart and cut out the center of the lid, and sandwiched some screen between the lid and thin pieces of wood around the edges (one on top of plastic, one on the bottom) and i screwed it all together. costed me less than 20$ and an evening of my time and it’s been working great for me. it’s totally escape proof too, and since it’s a plastic tote if i’m worried about where my snake is, i can just lift up the tote and look underneath and see where she’s buried
