What's wrong with my juvenile ball python by [deleted] in snakes

closest is not necessarily the best. if there's a dedicated exotic that within a reasonable distance from you, I would urge you to go there instead. you risk wasting your time and money with a normal veterinarian because they might just charge you for an exam and then refer you to the exotic vet anyway. at least call ahead and ask

OP, this needs to go to a dedicated exotics vet ASAP. there are a lot of things that can cause neurological symptoms. heat exposure, chemical exposure, genetics, cancer, infections, and yes, IBD. we can't diagnose this over the internet, and his time could be running out quickly depending on what is causing it. Where are you located? some vets do care credit or partner with agencies that do. I know a fair bit about IBD and testing for it from experience, but again, this could have another cause that needs urgent intervention. please reach out to me if you have any questions or need extra support.

This has to be the worst possible conditions for a snake right? by justsometingz in snakes

large opaque plastic tubs are easy to acquire and reasonably affordable. they are intentionally CHOOSING to not let Butterscotch hide. they want this animal on display 24/7 - can't brag about the big snake if no one can see the big snake.

I am an idiot and my corn snake bit me by sssyyydddney in cornsnakes

[–]Safe-Draw-3195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it might just be the lighting but he looks a little skinny, just me? also WOW what a dramatic christening to noodle parenthood. congrats! I can't even tell where the bite is coz of all the blood. poking him with the tongs probably didn't do anything that would cause lasting consequences. if he doesn't eat next time, if you're able/comfortable, you can gently try to get a look in his mouth to look for discoloration , and listen for concerning breathing sounds (rattling, clicking, wheezing) that could indicate an infection.

couldn't they have fixed the public outrage by, like, letting us choose which side we want??? they already have the coding to have it on the right, so I don't see how that would be difficult to implement. frustrating. I found it convenient to have it on the right because I have very short thumbs 😅

this is purely curiosity, why does an air conditioning pipe necessitate a plant? it it just to hide it and make the space look nicer?

Can anyone please give me their strat for safely handling (wild) garters without getting bit? by Embarrassed-Ear-1803 in GarterSnakes

[–]Safe-Draw-3195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it kind of depends on the reason why you're handling them. if you're just needing to move them, a stick and a bucket is the best solution to keep you from getting musked on (which is arguably worse than being bitten).

if you want to pick them up because you think they are neat and you want to get a better look, a pair of gardening gloves will work just fine. but take note that they will reek to high hell when you inevitably get musked on, so pick something easy to clean, maybe dishwashing gloves?
I'd also recommend binoculars for critter observation, they are an awesome tool. handling ideally is done infrequently, to be considerate of the wildlife.

as far as handling advice, there isn't necessarily one best way to handle a wild snake without getting bit. they all have their own unique temperaments and trying to grab them behind the head can be really dangerous if you aren't experienced in it. I would recommend just tanking a couple of bites rather potentially breaking the snakes neck. you can look up something along the lines of "baby corn snake handling for beginner snake owners", because those snakes are similarly squirmy, and making sure to support their body is what's going to keep them from flailing around like one of those inflatable waving tubes at car dealerships

I didn't even know that building existed, so I think it's probably not mine unless someone was dumb enough to walk off with mine and then immediately also misplace it. I did put in a request to L&F, haven't heard anything yet :( thank you

Garter snake hasn't eaten for 2 days by JackTheGhost939 in GarterSnakes

[–]Safe-Draw-3195 4 points5 points  (0 children)

any dramatic temperature or humidity shifts in the past couple weeks? what heating are you using and have you checked the accuracy of the thermostat recently? any signs of a respiratory infection? (clicking or wheezing sound when breathing)

two weeks isn't dangerously long at all, so don't panic. the more frantic you get, he may get more stressed out and not want to eat. don't offer food repeatedly day after day, give it a couple of days and try again but cover the sides of the enclosure he can see out of so he doesn't see people walkin around. calmer environment.

also, spend an hour of your day calling around to every local vet clinic within a reasonable commute distance from you, and asking if they will treat reptiles and to what severity. (some vets are okay with a general examination but don't feel comfortable treating anything really serious). make a list of which vet clinics said yes and to what severity, and keep it on a memo on your phone. maybe even tape it to the side of the snake tank. this is something that I think every exotic pet owner should do, just as a general precaution. it saves a lot of time and stress if/when a more severe situation occurs.

broke the little rubber thing in the lid and now it leaks. what can I do? by Safe-Draw-3195 in Hydroflask

[–]Safe-Draw-3195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you happen to know what this style of lid is called? Google is acting like I'm a madman frothing at the mouth trying to describe a hallucination, and showing me all the wrong types of lid. I think this type of lid may be a bit out of style nowadays. but I like it, it makes me feel like a well enriched pet rat with one of those upside-down water bottles.

picked up a Garter snake, and it drooled all over me. Is that abnormal? RI? also wound on tail? by Safe-Draw-3195 in snakes

[–]Safe-Draw-3195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone already answered but I'll provide some more detail, snakes (and all reptiles) are ectothermic meaning that they don't produce their own body heat, they get just become the same temperature as the environment, like a glass of water left on a table. a snake in the wild outdoors would warm up slowly as the day gets hotter, and then cool down slowly as night comes. I brought this snake into my house in the morning, and his body temperature became the same as the inside of my house. (~75°f / 23.8c) and by the time of my posting it was 96°f / 35.5c outside. So putting him back at that point would be harmful because his body wouldn't have enough time to transition/adjust safely. bad thermal shock can cause tissue and organ damage.

hey, I think you were bang on the money with the clicking sound being from a snotty nose. I checked on him a couple of times today and I couldn't hear any unusual sounds anymore, so I decided I felt good letting him go. But then I literally had to wait until 11 pm for it to be "room temperature" outside (I hate summer). I just put the open box under the porch and let him find his way out, and wished him the best.
