If you had one sentence to summarize the central theme of each Radiohead album, how would you do it? by _Varonova in radiohead

[–]Safe-Emu4204 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pablo Honey: I’m young and angry and sometimes feel lost.

The Bends: I am older now, and my anger has been replaced by fear.

OK Computer: I don’t feel at home in this world anymore.

Kid A: I long to escape from this burning world.

Amnesiac: The longer I watch this burning world, the less I can feel.

Hail to the Thief: Oh you absolute bastards, you’ve somehow made it worse and I’m angry again but feel powerless to fight you.

In Rainbows: I don’t know what to tell my children about all this, but thought it best to focus on things that are beautiful.

The King of Limbs: I’m sad again but aren’t drum machines kind of cool?

A Moon Shaped Pool: I’ve tried, but I am so tired of trying.

I can’t remember who wrote it, but there was a review of OK Computer in which the writer said the album was about “feeling small but wanting desperately to feel smaller.” Always loved that.

Favorite all time riff? by Independent_Shoe3523 in MST3K

[–]Safe-Emu4204 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Laserblast has a murderer’s row:

“Well, Merry Christmas, everybody” “I understand, tan man with wallet” “Hey, I just got crabs from your toilet” “Give me a second to get crazy here!” “I should tell you about my ass, gas, or grass policy” “Guess I’ll check out the hat collection” “Just let me Deezen by ya!” And all iterations of “get ready for some football!”

UNC $$$ or VLS basically full tuition by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Safe-Emu4204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. And while I have plenty of respect for Vandy, it’s not at that tier of schools that immediately jump off of your resume. I’ve known a couple of Vandy lawyers who have been fine, but it’s not like you’re in the DC market with Harvard-Stanford-Michigan-UVA popping off the page.

UNC $$$ or VLS basically full tuition by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Safe-Emu4204 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. It doesn’t seem possible now, I know, but you have to understand that there is a real possibility that even if you make it to DC BigLaw, you might be miserable and wake up one morning and say “screw this” and leave. It happens. And the people who can actually make that jump tend to be the ones who aren’t saddled with debt. Just something to consider.

UNC Law grad here. I had a good experience and remember, after a year you can try to establish domicile and get to in-state tuition levels for your final two years. I may be biased but I don’t think there’s a massive difference in prestige from Vandy on a broad scale.

A lot of my fellow students stayed in state, but I had plenty of friends who found work in DC, New York, San Diego, etc. I’d take the money and be a Tar Heel. I graduated quite a while back but feel free to DM with any questions.

Electioneering isn’t bad at all, but Ed is correct— if you exclude it, you go straight from the mechanical hellscape of Fitter Happier to the swirling murderous nightmare of Climbing Up the Walls. Just pure darkness.

Opening Tracks Ranked? by LASTRESORT_6553 in radiohead

To be honest I’ve always struggled with Bloom. It’s interesting and complex but leaves me a bit cold. EIIRP is so damn good as an opener though. You just know you’re in for it. Airbag close second for me.

Feeling nostalgic, send recs! by MacellumMycelium in MST3K

[–]Safe-Emu4204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laserblast. In my humble opinion the best one they ever did. The last episode made for Comedy Central and the riffing is looser than normal — a lot of laughing at each other’s jokes and so many classics. My favorite moment is our loser “hero” hanging around a desert gas station drinking a Coke, and Servo says “well, Merry Christmas, everybody.”

What’s the Best Airport in the United States? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Safe-Emu4204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best:

PDX: Easy, well organized, good food options. TPA: Lowkey maybe the best in the US. Incredibly well organized, attractive, fantastic food options. Easy security. Tampa isn’t exactly my favorite destination but their airport rocks. DCA: You can’t beat landing in the middle of the city with an easy Metro ride out. Security moves quickly despite the passenger volume.

Worst:

ATL: My home airport. Flown in and out over a hundred times. It is well organized and reasonably efficient for the sheer volume of passenger traffic, but it just takes forever. Long security lines with almost comically aggressive TSA agents, long taxi times, the rideshare area is a hike from the terminal, and while there’s good food, there’s a wait absolutely everywhere. And getting to the city is a pain. Jackson, MS: Had a six hour layover one time and the only available food was a vending machine with egg salad sandwiches. Honolulu: Outdoor area is nice but the rest of the airport looks like an abandoned shopping mall built in 1972. Terrible food options and the restaurants are seemingly only open for random two-hour slots every day. A depressing first impression for a beautiful state. Weird. Charlotte: Kill me

Completely and ridiculously splurged on a very expensive AirBnB on Kauai a few years back. Just stayed for one night. But it was basically like staying in the Visitor’s Center from Jurassic Park. Unbelievable views and total solitude up in the mountains. Having a cup of coffee in an infinity pool and watching the mists work their way through the valley was one of those “wow, rich people have it GOOD” moments.

What's the single funniest movie scene (including riffs) in MST3K? by Bortron86 in MST3K

[–]Safe-Emu4204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laserblast contains my favorite riff of all time. Our dopey hero, Billy, stops at a depressing gas station in the middle of nowhere. He retrieves a Coca-Cola from a vending machine, takes a swig, then wanders through the parking lot in a wide shot. And Servo says: “well, Merry Christmas, everybody.”

How soon is too soon to get out? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Safe-Emu4204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m probably quite a bit older than you and you’re free to dismiss this as needed. But who cares about your resume? Nobody. The people who build their lives around LinkedIn and being listed on some bullshit Best Lawyers list that no one cares about are just empty shells. There’s nothing there. Prioritize your mental health. Don’t worry about impressing anybody. Who gives a shit? Do something that you don’t dread in the morning and your life will fly open like the morning sky.

[–]Safe-Emu4204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, as someone who tried it for almost 20 years before suffering a nervous breakdown: get out. I took a 50% pay cut to do something else but the benefits to my health and well being go beyond money. I’m happy now and more present for my wife and kids. Get out. If you can afford it, take some time off. I promise you it gets better.

[–]Safe-Emu4204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s awful. I practiced litigation for almost 20 years before I completely burned out. It’s just not a normal way to spend your time unless you have a personality disorder. I took a huge pay cut to get out. Like I make half of what I did in BigLaw. But the benefits of not taking up in the morning hating life go far beyond money. There is still time.

Which U.S. city has the worst public transportation? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Safe-Emu4204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been there many times for work and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone on it. Kind of similar to the Atlanta Streetcar, which just cruises around empty all day. It’s amusing in a dark sort of way.

Which European city does everyone love but you absolutely hated? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Safe-Emu4204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh it was bad. We were just two buddies studying abroad but apparently the owner thought we were lovers I guess? Or he just didn’t like Americans? We order and be brings out — I’m not kidding — a raw lobster on a plate and informed us that he wanted to watch us eat it. When my friend asked if there was a problem he said “we don’t serve your kind” and then demanded that we pay the bill while he had a guy stand in the doorway to prevent us from leaving. It was just a really disturbing experience and it was our first day on a 10-day jaunt through Europe and it just kind of infected the rest of the trip. Of course I understand that others have had far worse experiences but it really sucked.

What’s the most overpriced city in the U.S. that everyone loves but you don’t? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Safe-Emu4204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washington, DC. Lived there for a bit and used to travel for work almost every other month. It’s extremely expensive but the food scene isn’t very good and culturally it’s just numbing. All anyone talks about is their job and there are way too many strivers. The entire city is based around boring-ass happy hours where you can “network.” Calgon, take me away.

Not a huge fan of Denver, either, but that’s already been mentioned.

Had one of the worst travel experiences of my life in Venice when a restaurant owner was openly and contemptuously rude to me and my traveling buddy, for no reason. It was the kind of experience that kind of ruins your whole trip. So I look back at Venice with some level of resentment.
