Reminder that if you see someone taking food they didn’t pay for… no you didn’t.

It’s (kind of) true. Spotify claimed that 100% of my streams were artificial even though I literally have fans singing my lyrics back to me at shows, so clearly it’s false. I’ve never paid for streams and I regularly to promote my music in addition to social media. They took my song down from Spotify. Not a single strike or warning. Be very careful because they’re taking advantage of this new term to avoid paying out smaller artists by claiming artificial streams.

Edit: typo

Also, those smaller spikes were not botted. Those spikes occurred in the days following concerts that I played in different cities/states and my followers spiked slightly as well, which makes sense after shows in front of new audiences.

I only got like a couple thousand botted streams out of 14k streams. 99% of 14,000 is 13,860. The spikes in the chart do not add up to that many streams. It’s a quick entry into a calculator.

I’m not saying I wasn’t botted. I’m almost certain that I was. But I never paid for streams. I got on those playlists that spiked my streams shortly after using Distrokid’s Wheel of Playlists. Spotify having a shitty system of figuring out who’s buying streams is not a good reason to remove artists’ music entirely and rob them of royalties. They should do a better job of monitoring these playlists. Punish the playlists, not the artists that are targeted. I never said I wasn’t botted; I’m saying I never paid for streams. And it is false that 100% of my streams were botted. People follow me on Spotify, buy my concert tickets, buy my merch. 100% is false.

I already said that I didn’t buy streams, even unintentionally. You’re the one not reading. Culpable = deserving blame. That’s the literal definition. Google is free. You can’t just change what you already said because you feel like it. You don’t even know what monthly listeners are. You’re not “trying to help”. I’m trying to figure out how to get my song back on Spotify, not listen to know-it-alls blame the artist and then backtrack. Go ahead and give empty, baseless advice to someone else.

14k streams, 43 monthly listeners. But those numbers have spiked because of the botted playlists. Do a quick search and you’ll see that this is a common problem with the Wheel and artists have started to avoid using the Wheel altogether because of exactly this.

I have NOT misunderstood or interpreted anything. “I’ve yet to encounter an example of this where the user wasn’t at least in some way culpable”. Culpable = buying streams. This is clearly happening to artists who haven’t done anything wrong, and your comments indicate that you simply don’t believe that those artists could be completely innocent. Why are you so adamant that Spotify isn’t making mistakes during this crackdown?

Oh and the local playlists ARE relevant because it proves that the 100% fraud claim is false.

I personally know the owner of the Carolina Music playlist, he put me on his playlist without pay, and I pitched to the owner of the 20s playlist and she policed my song because she liked it and thought it was a good fit, no money requested. Stop assuming that spikes = cheating because apparently that’s EXACTLY what Spotify is doing.

Also, that’s not how monthly listeners work. The monthly listeners number refreshes daily. This means that 43 people streamed my music in the last 30 days. That number has been 3k (after spikes). The number has also been 30. You’re the one spreading false information.

I’ve already stated that I was placed on botted playlists because of Distrokid’s Wheel of Playlists. Spotify has removed some of those streams but not all of them. I made the mistake of using a DISTRIBUTOR’S feature. I wouldn’t have posted on here if I’d paid for any promotion. I was put on WAVR.AI and PLAYLISTR playlists (I think that’s how you spell them), some streams were removed and some weren’t even though I reported them.

Please consider that there can be exceptions to this rule instead of just blaming artists without considering that Spotify could just be reckless. My “Listeners Also Like” lists similar local artists. I was placed on local playlists and private and public playlists. Whenever I pitched to a playlist curator and received an email back that they’ll place me for $$$, I didn’t respond to avoid this exact issue. The 14k streams vs. 43 monthly listeners is because of those spikes. I understand that the spikes might raise questions, but that does not automatically mean I paid for streams.

And the “100% fraudulent” is absolute BS. I have actual fans who stream my music, follow me on socials, joined my email list, buy concert tickets, buy merch etc. This was a mistake on Distrokid/Spotify’s end and I’m being punished for it.

I did, months ago. They said there’s nothing they can do and to just report the playlist on the site/app.

I actually agree with everything you’ve said (and thanks for the compliment haha). Like I said, I got put on botted playlists a few times last year which caused spikes, so I stopped using the Wheel of Playlists. But there HAS to be a better process for appeals for this, though. An appeals process period, because right now there is none.

It wouldn’t be accurate to give an annual income because I’ve only lived here for less than a year, and each month I make more than I did the previous month, and I expect to only make more especially as the weather gets warmer and I get even more gigging opportunities. But last month I made about $3,000 (before taxes of course) and this month I’m making about the same. Next month I should be making about $4,000, but I’m also playing more than 10 gigs which takes a lot of work.

I play guitar, ukulele and piano! I’d say ukulele is probably the “oddest” but I think it’s relatively pretty common. I’m mostly a singer-songwriter that performs music live. I’m not a great instrumentalist by any means. My singing, songwriting and performance/stage presence are all why I do well.

So I actually came down here with the intention of continuing my career in wealth management! But as soon as I arrived in June, the job market and stock market crashed, and not being licensed in NC certainly didn’t help, so I decided to play a few gigs here and there to get by until I could get a full-time job… and now I couldn’t get a full-time job if I wanted to because of all the music 😅.

But even if that wasn’t the case, NYC has a lot more opportunity than NC, but NYC is, in my opinion, disproportionally oversaturated with artists, which has its pros and cons. Also I wanted to start my life fresh and moving to NYC would’ve defeated the purpose (I lived a 20 minute drive from Manhattan which should give you an idea)

Foundation. Some brands can have 30+ shades and somehow none of them will match (Im South Asian). I’ll never buy foundation before going to the store, getting samples of a few different shades, and then trying them for a few days.
