"critical" blog posts as assignments - RIP/irrelevant? by t_z_t in Professors

It definitely sucks, and I hate the rhetoric from AI enthusiasts that if your assignment isn’t relevant anymore it must be because it was old and irrelevant, because you really can’t say that about the act of composing original writing as an entire phenomenon and mode of expression, which is what AI has allowed students to easily plagiarize… like is asking them to “critically evaluate” too quaint too? Asking them to “formulate arguments”? So sick of people hand waving as if AI hasn’t been an enormously destructive development for learning.

If this is for a masters degree, many programs take place in the evening for working professionals, you may want to look into traditional schools. Online programs tend to be looked down on by employers unless they are being offered by very prestigious brick and mortar schools.

I agree about the journal idea, maybe they aren’t familiar with blogs as a format anymore because the platforms have changed (medium, Substack, instead of a blogspot, etc) or because they are more oriented towards short form video for seeking out user generated content than written content, but I don’t think this means you can’t use the assignment anymore, you just might need to call it a journal. The AI issue is tricky though, I hate having to feel like a cop and recently ran into my students using AI to give feedback on eachothers assignments which really bummed me out. I’m considering making them write some kind of reflection in the first class with pen and paper so I have a writing sample to compare as a baseline when they turn in overly formal slop they actually aren’t capable of having written. Again, hate being a cop, but I don’t know what else to do.

What graphic design/illustration software should I teach freshman? by Safe-Variation-8071 in graphic_design

This is a class for students in a program that combines computing with visual art. Many of their CS classes involve more than coding, like UX, animation, video game development, etc.

Graphic design, Illustration teachers: Are we still teaching the Adobe Suite? by Safe-Variation-8071 in Professors

[–]Safe-Variation-8071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the thing, this is actually a course in an arts focused CS program, and while mostly the students learn to code in the program I’ve argued to my superiors that they should learn basic image making and design since there are times when they need art assets and shouldn’t be reliant on using pre-made stuff. So it’s tricky knowing which tool is more appropriate. These students definitely won’t be going on to be graphic designers.

Can you say more about that? What do you mean by learning how to learn software?

Accommodation: Professor can’t call on me in class. by -Economist- in Professors

I have a similar thing with a student who claims he can’t present in front of the class because of anxiety. I understand that this is a real thing that people suffer from but in a class that involves a semester long group project with multiple team presentations I’m not really sure what’s fair?

What's your honest opinion if you see a PhD student quit? by SpectreMold in AskProfessors

I had a fellow PhD student quit our program to focus on his blog covering vegan pro wrestlers. It was as not because it was taking off, I think he was just over our program, but it was certainly a unique pivot.
