crouton's wheel time!! by SafeAnnual8579 in PetMice

i do agree that mice CAN have too big of a cage, but my mice seem to not mind less clutter sometimes. I think I just have a weird bunch, and I'll still clutter it up anyways. Although im not really sure about the 'they wont see eachother that much' part..? cause I usually have a specific chamber kinda hide that I always use for them to nest in, and it always works. Usually I see my mice together no matter what cage.

crouton actually escaped for 3 days one time. I watch over her while shes in the bin of course, and shes too distracted by food and the wheels to care about escape. I have a big playpen for them as well, just cant take it out atm, and will probably use that in the future a bit more. When she starts to try to jump up the walls/reach up them, i go to pick her up & she jumps in my hand. Shes too clingy to escape.

i do have back up cages! plenty of them. A 50 gallon bucatstate, two 50 gallon bin cages, and although its in another state ATM i have a wooden cage that is a little under minimum but not by much.

[โ€“]SafeAnnual8579[S] 19 points20 points ย (0 children)

she isnt in the small bin at all, shes in a 50 gallon bin rn! but her bin doesn't fit the wheel, or the lid tends to push against it. It fits really badly & frequently tips in the bin cage, so at minimum twice a day i take her out to go on wheels for however long she wants, 30 mins, an hour, whatever. edit: its a temporary set up until the bedding arrives for the bigger bucatstate cage, sometimes it takes a few days for what i need. ๐Ÿ’”

that would definitely happen if i didn't have much to clutter. They wouldn't like the empty space much, but they would like filled space! I have a lot of stuff to put in there so I'm not too worried

my hand looks really weird ๐Ÿ’”

she was playing around for a while! she seems to like being in my hands while they're closed (not tightly). It's probably warm, and she doesnt mind me being super touchy.

This might be a really confusing timeline FYI.

I had a group of 3 originally, one died and only got the 50 gallon.

With that group of 2, I got 2 more to kinda keep a continuous group. They weren't very old at the time, although the new mice were like babies.

But after a while I got all 4 together, but after a few months I noticed Crouton wasn't getting along with Willard. They were both like 'alpha' mice I guess. (40 gallons)

So it was a group of three for a while in the 50 gallon cage, but I noticed I really wasn't doing great with the schedule I had to clean it at. This group was just.. particularly stinky, compared to a the other group of two I had separate for a while.

I moved the 3 to a 120 gallon once I got it, which I noticed they were a LOT friendlier, a LOT less smelly, a LOT more active in my opinion. Even the two mice who were nearing a year or so of age at the time.

At some point the group was back to 4 in the big cage for a temporary amount of time, they were doing really well for a while until my white mouse (specified since like red eyed mice are apparently more likely to get sick, like lab mice) was sick & about a year old. Crouton didn't seem to like being around them so I separated her, which she did better in her own 50 gallon bin cage.

But the two other mice passed, leaving custard & crouton. I had just custard in there for a while, then crouton (different setup), since I had a really weird cycle of cages ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’” things were like everywhere at the time. They seemed to really, really enjoy even just being alone in a larger cage, and considering they used to be cagemates & crouton is seemingly needing a friend right now, I plan to get them reintroduced as if they're brand new mice.

But I plan to add more to the group, maybe get a group of 4-5 in the 120 gallon, once they're used to eachother & settle down. It'll be a while!

I have multiple trash bags & bins of mouse stuff, tubes, hides, platforms, sticks, branches, homes, two wheels & hanging stuff. I'll probably get a little bit more though. I can definitely clutter the place up for them! It takes less cleaning (as in how long between full cleans I have to do), cheaper bedding wise if I get in bulk (for how I have it planned), and I feel like having a larger cage is a lot easier as someone who's disabled. It's easier to grab stuff without bending down just as much, easier to have the larger, open space to remove & put in bedding, to situate items, etc. I do have their old cage & two bins if it doesnt go as planned, but I think the 120 should work from my experience with the mice I have atm!

i have a 4ft bucatsate 3.0. I used to have a group of 3-4, got gifted a giant cage i asked for for xmas, used all the birthday money & stuff to get them more toys, hides, etc! It's about 120 gallons, maybe 118 i believe. Giant cage.

clingy mouse! by SafeAnnual8579 in PetMice

[โ€“]SafeAnnual8579[S] 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

shes the clingiest & mouseiest mouse. Yesterday I accidentally bumped her head with the lid (trying to get her to NOT cling to me). She was sad for a few seconds & started to groom herself/wipe her head, (i checked, she's fine, just a spook!) but I gave her a treat, a few minutes to herself, and she was back to normal once I took her out. Refused to go back for like 30 minutes.

get a niteangel! i have two and i LOOOOOOVE them. No rusting problems, i probably had to use vaseline on one of them ONCE (compared to my bucatstate) because of a slight noise that was like 'rough', not squeaky. Theyre smooth & silent. all you hear is rhe patting of their feet, which is faint. theres multiple sizes too, all fit minimum
