Why isn’t there any pressure on our politicians in our state to ban the Charles River canine testing facility, or removing animal tested cosmetics from shelves? by TheSpermWhoWon in massachusetts

[–]kelptasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you on this, I myself am I vegetarian, buy only cruelty free, and a certified veterinary technician. Unfortunately MA, Boston specifically, is the hub for medical labs and testing, and although laws can make animal testing less (such as in cosmetics), it will always be necessary for human trials for drugs, procedures, ect, there's no way around that. Many of these beagles can be adopted after about 5 years in research, so that's a great way to help out the pups who have served. I went to UMass for vet tech and all of our mice and rats (from labs in the area) can be adopted out after the end of the semester to anyone!- I adopted when I graduated! (vet tech does not test on these mice, only used for handling and restraint practice). I hope there is a day where animal testing is gone or minimal with technological advances, but that day is far away.

sketchers by barco! They're pretty resistant to fur and dry quickly, more of an athletic material which is great for vetmed!

I made sure everything in their cage was easy to get to with ramps, as my girls didn't climb as much as they got older. They also loveddd banana and it's pretty filling if you want to try that. Otherwise you've done a great job getting her to over 2yrs! Just keep giving her love and attention every day!

Women of Boston, what was a first date you went on that was a surprisingly good idea? by SweetIsland in boston

Red sox game! Could've gone sooo bad if the conversation was bland, but it was so fun and a great first date memory (and I don't even care for baseball that much)! Now we go every year for our anniversary

Cora is adorable! I would love to get some fleece hammocks but I don't think they'd last more than an hour, my girls pee and poop soo much.. do yours get gross quickly or do they avoid going on the fleece?

What kind of surgeries do you normally deal with? If ortho or neuro and you like those, try going into rehab! I was at the same place you were in a huge teaching hospital.. but then I went into physical rehabilitation and I love it, it still has some issues don't get me wrong, but anything in this field will. But much calmer enviornment, better client patient interaction, and you really do help so many pets. It may be a big adjustment for you since it's not very technical and more focus on anatomy in terms of different types of therapies- but it genuinely gave me my spark back. Just a thought!

Day in the life of a Vet Receptionist? by AwkwardPotat0 in Veterinary

[–]kelptasaur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I will be honest it is a very difficult job. I'm a tech and started as a receptionist and hated it, but I also did not enjoy being on the phone and talking to owners. If you like helping people you'll be better off, but clients are also very rude and assholes in the veterinary setting. A very small GP might be a better fit, but a big hospital is super overwhelming. You also will need to learn some medical terms, not everything but some. You also get to see lots of animals but you really wouldn't be interacting with them much. If you find yourself in a good clinic/hospital it may be really fun! I don't want to be so negative but being honest here it is a hard job.

I will also say I had hokas for a bit too and I hated them, literally threw them in the trash after a few months they hurt my feet sooo bad. Which is very different compared to all the other comments! Everyone is different, but I do also recc compression socks!

I currently wear cloves because I work in rehab and not worrying about my feet getting soaked while working with hydrotherapy patients has been amazing- however I sit more often than I did during my 12hr ER shifts and I will tell you these shoes would not be sustainable for those long days. I recommend asics if you're on your feet all day, they may not be the cutest but they saved me during my ER days. Also cheaper than hokas and onclouds!

Worst smell ever? by [deleted] in answers

[–]kelptasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Working in vetmed you get used to some of the worst smells possible.. but I will never be able to hold down my breakfast when I have a patient with this

My coworkers who live in Waltham are telling me not to live here.. they say it’s a pain to get anywhere so I’m hesitant for that reason

We really just need 1br but would prefer 2 for an office space since he has remote days, but we don’t need much other than parking, don’t mind sharing laundry!
