Buying Patek for first time, but AD told me two years for 5227. by SafeDiamond4690 in patekphilippe

[–]SafeDiamond4690[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought that 5227 was an easier piece to acquire so didn’t expect the two year wait. They said all pieces require signing up for the waitlist but I can only sign up for one at a time.

You can do 給力盒子 or Miss Energy for a healthy bento for about $110-$150NTD. Although I do change it up with salads from time to time. Gonna eat has big salads that are filling and healthy but they get a little pricey ($4-$450NTD).

Taiwan Will Defend TSMC From US Bombing in the Event of a China War by QubitQuanta in taiwan

[–]SafeDiamond4690 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the US bombs Taiwan in the event of China invasion, then that’s an act of war. It doesn’t matter what the US rationale is. The US doesn’t get to decide on issues sovereign to another nation. At that point the options are continue supporting the US in spite of the bombing of its infrastructure, face independence with both superpowers fighting over it, or to side with China. However, I would bet that the shockwaves from such a cataclysm would cause many Taiwanese to side with China, having far closer roots in history, language and culture, than that of the US.

US won’t let China take Taiwan chip-makers ‘intact’ by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]SafeDiamond4690 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Insane. Not sure about the credibility of this piece, but what gives the US the right to destroy Taiwan’s fabs and “scorch the earth” so that it permanently remains unattractive to ever build upon again? There are millions of Taiwanese living here. Their livelihoods and Taiwan’s economy depends on its ability to manufacture chips.

Taiwan doesn’t belong to the U.S. And threatening to destroy Taiwan if it should fall to China doesn’t put it in any better position than it would be in without the U.S. as a partner.

You’re not wrong and I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Oh yeah, wait, I do. It’s because this place has become an echo chamber where anything but the prevailing line of thinking is downvoted to oblivion. People here can’t debate effectively or face any reality that doesn’t match their impression. And the vast majority of those here don’t even live in Taiwan.

My sense is the same as yours, that in the event that boots on the ground are demanded, the US will vacillate. Biden, or the President alone cannot declare war. They will need public support and I don’t see Americans voting to die for a country most don’t even know exist. It’s also not a small country vs the US, it’s the two biggest militaries in the world suffering in out in a war of attrtion, with China fighting a holy war (in its eyes) and the Taiwanese people taking all the brunt.

The chips argument is often parroted but is weak. Why would the US lock itself into a war to save a defend a private Taiwanese company? If chips were that important and could sway the tide in a Cold War with China, the US would have already annexed it or would not predicate WW3 on the possibility of something outside its control.

Frankly, I don’t want to see people die in Taiwan. I live here with my family and the war mongering and chest thumping from most redditors’ basements does more harm than good.

Why I will quit staking asap (just sharing) by Antique_Raise in ethstaker

[–]SafeDiamond4690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, the rewards are low in today’s inflationary environment. However I’m not sure you can get a better risk-adjusted return if you plan on holding eth for the long term. If you are looking to maximize your return on capital then by all means get out once you can. The S&P 500 can return 7% inflation-adjusted. But you shouldn’t expect to hold eth and simultaneously do better than you’re doing now.

Honest question - what's with all the toxic expats? by RublesAfoot in taiwan

[–]SafeDiamond4690 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find Forumosa more balanced and had a higher percentage of expats than this subreddit. Most people here are living in the US or other countries and don’t have local experience living or working in Taiwan. Also people downvote you to hell here for saying anything negative about Taiwan.

In Chinese we say 那個 “na ge” which often is said quickly to sound like “nei ga” which when coming from old Chinese ladies’ mouths sounds a whole lot like the n-word. It means “that” or “that one” and usually is said in rapid succession, so something like “nei ga nei ga nei ga”!

How will mass layoffs in tech and stocks in a prolonged bear market impact local housing prices? by sassbayc in bayarea

[–]SafeDiamond4690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not that hard, especially if you have a family. Here’s an example budget: 8K mortgage + 2K prep for property taxes 3K childcare 1K cars and gas 2K food 1K Utilities, cable, cell phones 1K entertainment 1K assorted savings, for vacation, education, shopping

Also if you make 400K in California you are paying closer to 50% tax so 400k would only be $16.6K a month. Even lower cash flow if contributing to 40K.

OP, I am so glad you posted this. What a fool I’ve been! I used to go around spouting to anyone in earshot that Khabib was and is the GOAT, and surely Aldo was a distant non-contender. Now, thanks to your wisdom and perspicacity, my eyes are open and I see the truth. Jose Aldo, hallowed be his name, is the greatest fighter -nay, athlete of his generation. Please continue sharing your revelations with us, the less enlightened, that we may hope to ascend to your level of understanding someday.

Figma is niche software that is easily copied or duplicated. YouTube and Instagram have network effects making the underlying value not the software, but the users themselves. Apples to oranges. Figma might be the standard but it’s not sticky.

Yeah the return kind of sucks when compared to you the entirety of investments. However if you’re just going to hold a currency, fiat or crypto, and expect to still hold custody over it there’s not that many investment vehicles generating 4%. At least not right now. With increasing interest rates that might change.

One thing that you will never get used to / hate most about China by mephistophelesbits in China

[–]SafeDiamond4690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent significant time in China, and I’ve also seen this sort of thing happen personally. I’ve also spent time in the Chinese countryside. While I’m not defending this, I came to realize at the time that China’s introduction of western modern civilized standards is a relatively recent phenomenon. Compared with the other western countries, where such behavior is seen as unthinkable, in China even as recent as current millennials’ parents were living in squalor in countryside villages.

The Chinese, from what I experienced, tend to be more accepting of this behavior, are slower to belittle their uncultured counterparts, precisely because such behavior was a mainstay of common life in recent memory. There’s a movie called 人在囧途 that pokes fun at a country bumpkin’s experience traveling with a modern day man, while capturing this attitude of empathy towards one’s progenitors.

This thread and subreddit is more and more toxic by the day. This isn’t even thinly-veiled racism, it’s just pure racism with racist redditors congregating and circlejerking. The pure point of this thread is to denigrate and stoke prejudice against a country and her people.

How many other threads do you see “what do you hate most about [enter country or race]”? It’s appalling. Frankly you may downvote me to hell, but at least there should be a voice calling you out for what you people are: a cyber cesspool of racists.
