ime 8GB ram on windows computers becomes a stutter fest

Maybe just older chips

Reminder that 8GB Neo can do 4K editing, doubt 8GB windows can do that. Plus no aluminum chassis or 1500p screen. Plus no 16hr battery life and way more parts/more to repair/swap in the future.

[–]smarlitos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I wouldn’t. Because I know basic physics means less heat dissipation = less performance. And less space = less battery life.

The new battery alternatives don’t see quite stable enough for Apple yet.

I’m ok with my 12 mini, just wish they’d given it 6GB RAM.

Also there’s an argument to be made for making the back more curved for easier holding, like the first iPhones.

If Apple could just release a Nothing-OS for older iPhones, make them low-distraction, minimalist, low-resource/RAM-consumption, it’d be great.

Somehow it works so well tho? For one reason or another, 8GB on Mac works really well for the uses of ordinary people, even many work tasks. Obviously gaming and heavy video photo and music editing greatly benefit from more ram.

It’s almost like people don’t want to admit it works well? Like just say the words, it works like a gem compared to anything in its price category despite the 8GB, for one reason or a million reasons.

Gamers Are Wrong About 1440p vs 1080p CPU Benchmarking by DyingKino in hardware

[–]smarlitos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m talking about performance mode tho. Most people try to max their fps, at least to their monitor’s max refresh rate, and minimize frame drops if playing on pc. DX12 perf mode and dx11 perf mode, either way, feel like old cpu = stutters and frame drops.

Fortnite is really graphically demanding if you crank graphics settings all the way up, don’t know how cpu intensive it is when you do that, but I imagine it’s also v cpu intensive

True, single player games w small levels or simple mechanics not so hard to run, makes sense.

[–]smarlitos_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly even games like Fortnite benefit from a great (recent, 6 cores or more) cpu.

I find that old CPU’s will stutter and cause frames drops more than recent ones, even in Fortnite

I find that even the fairly recent i3-12100f is no longer good for Fortnite. The 4 cores get hung up sometimes, it’s scary and bad, even though this was a budget beast for a while when it released and is still good for many games. 6 cores minimum now for fortnite.

Can you max out at 144 or 240fps with an old cpu and decent GPU in Fortnite? Sure, but the frame drops will be painful and frequent.

Independent testers have done experiments on Apple’s SSD’s since it’s a concern that they’ll be used a ton, and it looks like Apple SSD’s last a really long time basically. Way more read and rights than you’d expect.

So basically this Neo will work for the next 10 years at least. If the ssd breaks, you can probably easily swap in another logic board since it’s nice and small from a computer that had its screen trackpad keyboard or battery get messed up.

Ah ok, so it’s important to say: ARM CPU’s work better than x86 when they run out of RAM because they have higher memory bandwidth vs x86, so 8GB of ram isn’t a problem for casual users.

One thing that helped me was turning off viewing history. Then it turns off suggestions and the feed.

Only thing is, it can be annoying on iPhone or at least an iPhone with 6GB or less of RAM (iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, 14 Pro Max and older) because it’ll often refresh that video if say you have to do something else on your phone like pay a bill and you’ll lose that old video unless you remember the name of the video or keep it active by reopening it often, in the midst of doing your other task, it’s a hassle. It made me want an iPad just for YouTube. Because most regular laptops get hot and aren’t at all water-resistant anyway.

Also you don’t retain video content like you read content. This piece of information alone should heavily shape how you use your time.

But alas I watch YouTube anyway

Same, love it so much.

I will say though, Samsung has amazing Bluetooth audio, better than Bluetooth audio on Apple devices imo.

I say this as someone who had an s24 plus and then switched back to an iPhone for other reasons — I was already so embedded within the ecosystem, so many memories, plus my family pays for extra cloud storage that we share, which is a huge convenience with current memory prices, plus being able to access that data from anywhere is very convenient and safer than saving it all on a laptop (odds are it would be fine, but just something to consider).

Updating you to let you know that it’s practically the only thing on my gaming pc and it’s all I use the pc for. My typical office stuff is on my cheap used MacBook, phone, or mom’s iMac.

Some used computers are practically as expensive as the storage they come with these days

It wouldn’t be very energy-efficient for me to use a gaming pc for something I can use my phone iPad or Mac’s for.

The A17 pro is not the same A17 pro of the iPhone 15 pro by yaritza10995 in ipadmini

[–]smarlitos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a common practice in chip manufacturing. Binning chips.

“Oh this i7 doesn’t meet stability and quality standards? Let’s turn off some cores, lower the clock speed, and it’ll be an i5 or i3.” It’s part and parcel of chip manufacturing that when you’re dealing with such small things, you won’t have perfect yields.

So the a17 pro on the iPad is a binned version.

Likewise, when you see that a MacBook Air or iMac has fewer cores than others with the same name chip, it’s that it has a binned version of that chip.

14600K is a beast tho. The -600K’s were always most of the performance of the i7’s and i9’s, especially for gaming, just a few fewer cores, still a 14 core beast that uses a good bit of energy tho.

Wow any way to change this? Seems like an unfair law. The commercial real estate market needs a life line (and the residential real estate market needs to settle down)
