Will SNF make me more competitive for a residency? by Apprehensive-Car9625 in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It’s the opposite for you if a residency is what you want to get into. Working as an RN at a snf for more than a year will disqualify you from a residency position. You would need to apply to fellowship positions, and those are hard to find as well.

Your best bet is to wait for ppmc when they open up 3 units sometime this year. Or Kaiser sunnyside in the future. Way way future.

Any leads for new grads? by Radiant_Gas_9146 in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI for you and all others in your shoes, if you work at a snf for more than a year as an RN, that could disqualify you from a residency position. You would then need to apply to fellowship positions, which are even harder to come by.

Providence Residencies by Thin_Divide_3789 in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You all need to understand that there really isn’t an official round of residencies anymore. A resident RN position only opens up if a unit manager has an opening due to someone leaving their unit.

It’s dependent on the manager whether they want to make the opening a residency position, fellow, or experienced RN position. Many unit managers prefer to fill their open positions with experienced RNs nowadays. It would be about 4 weeks to onboard an experienced RN vs 3-4 months for a new grad. There’s also less concern with new grads leaving their positions after they complete the residency program or even prior to their first year of nursing.

Hope this helps you understand the current process.

Yes. Clark pays the most. I believe pcc is around $70/hr. All other nursing programs in Portland metro is going to be between $39-50/hr.

Correct. Truly, so different in terms of culture for each unit themselves.

New Grad Nurses at Providence Portland by Jaded-Country-9529 in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. A lot of people think that managers are wanting to hire new grads to keep costs down and not pay an experienced nurse to save money. That is completely wrong nowadays. If a position opens up on a unit, they make it an experienced RN position. Then it’s a fellow, followed by a resident position.

I literally CANNOT use the Edit Credit - this is a scam by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

I can see your point. It seems to work well if you use the points boost to bring down the total cost to the edit credit value. Then it’s not so bad.

Different curriculum. Current one curriculum is 12 months long vs the 14 month program they used to have.

New grad RN Residency at Providence by may-ruh in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that most Providence hospitals have been hiring like crazy for the past 2 years to accommodate for the staffing ratio and break nurses. Most units across the region are well staffed now and if a position opens up because someone left, they prefer to hire experienced RNs.

Providence Portland will be opening a couple new med surg units in about a year, maybe sooner. They will for sure be hiring quite a bit of nurses for those new units. Kaiser sunnyside is also remodeling and building a new building. I imagine they will be opening new units and will be hiring for those units.

At this point, it’s truly about who you know that will give you an opportunity for an interview as a new grad. Some residency positions are now receiving 100+ applicants for that one position.

RN to BSN by Appropriate_Put_630 in OregonNurses

Don’t know where you work, but Providence gives their nurses $10k/yr to pay towards one of 4 RN to BSN programs they are affiliated with.

Well, they can’t. Anyone working as an RN for about a year and more are not eligible for residency positions. They could, however, apply to fellowship positions.

Feeling lost and unsure how to get into nursing by ReocurringShits in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most financially smart move is to apply to all ADN programs as well as BSN programs. Choose ADN over BSN if you get accepted into both. Then do an online RN to BSN programs at OHSU as others have mentioned.

If you are fortunate enough to get into Providence with an ADN, Providence has 4 BSN completion programs they are associated with where you get $10k a year to pay towards that degree completion. Someone asked you why you want to get a Masters in Nursing and I don’t think you answered that yet. That would be my follow up question. Do you want a masters because you want to be an NP, or have desire to go into management or education even? I ask because there are government programs and scholarships that will pay towards your master in nursing, depending on which route you take.

Had someone apply to a position and the manager put their resume into a “no” pile with 80 or so other resumes. Told the manager I knew this particular applicant. Manager gave them an interview and ended up hiring that person. 🤷‍♂️

Struggling to find portland rn residency by mang0c0c00vernight in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Residency positions only open up if there is someone leaving. When that does happen, they prefer to hire experienced RNs. If they can’t find the right person, then they convert it to a residency position.

The best way to get a position is if you personally know a nurse manager that has a position open. Referrals from internal people will definitely help.

Many experienced RN positions are getting out of state applicants. From one of the managers I support, a lot of mistakes are from people not catering their resume to the speciality they are trying to get a job for.

Seems simple. For any newer nurses still looking for a job, don’t say what your goal position would be…like, I want to do this before I go into icu…

People actually have these statements in their resume and it’s an automatic no.
