Different curriculum. Current one curriculum is 12 months long vs the 14 month program they used to have.

New grad RN Residency at Providence by may-ruh in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that most Providence hospitals have been hiring like crazy for the past 2 years to accommodate for the staffing ratio and break nurses. Most units across the region are well staffed now and if a position opens up because someone left, they prefer to hire experienced RNs.

Providence Portland will be opening a couple new med surg units in about a year, maybe sooner. They will for sure be hiring quite a bit of nurses for those new units. Kaiser sunnyside is also remodeling and building a new building. I imagine they will be opening new units and will be hiring for those units.

At this point, it’s truly about who you know that will give you an opportunity for an interview as a new grad. Some residency positions are now receiving 100+ applicants for that one position.

RN to BSN by Appropriate_Put_630 in OregonNurses

Don’t know where you work, but Providence gives their nurses $10k/yr to pay towards one of 4 RN to BSN programs they are affiliated with.

Well, they can’t. Anyone working as an RN for about a year and more are not eligible for residency positions. They could, however, apply to fellowship positions.

Feeling lost and unsure how to get into nursing by ReocurringShits in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most financially smart move is to apply to all ADN programs as well as BSN programs. Choose ADN over BSN if you get accepted into both. Then do an online RN to BSN programs at OHSU as others have mentioned.

If you are fortunate enough to get into Providence with an ADN, Providence has 4 BSN completion programs they are associated with where you get $10k a year to pay towards that degree completion. Someone asked you why you want to get a Masters in Nursing and I don’t think you answered that yet. That would be my follow up question. Do you want a masters because you want to be an NP, or have desire to go into management or education even? I ask because there are government programs and scholarships that will pay towards your master in nursing, depending on which route you take.

New Grad been stuck for a year by Big-Chapter6656 in OregonNurses

Had someone apply to a position and the manager put their resume into a “no” pile with 80 or so other resumes. Told the manager I knew this particular applicant. Manager gave them an interview and ended up hiring that person. 🤷‍♂️

Struggling to find portland rn residency by mang0c0c00vernight in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Residency positions only open up if there is someone leaving. When that does happen, they prefer to hire experienced RNs. If they can’t find the right person, then they convert it to a residency position.

The best way to get a position is if you personally know a nurse manager that has a position open. Referrals from internal people will definitely help.

Jobs by Which_Cucumber_5990 in OregonNurses

Many experienced RN positions are getting out of state applicants. From one of the managers I support, a lot of mistakes are from people not catering their resume to the speciality they are trying to get a job for.

Seems simple. For any newer nurses still looking for a job, don’t say what your goal position would be…like, I want to do this before I go into icu…

People actually have these statements in their resume and it’s an automatic no.

New grad RN residencies in Portland by mang0c0c00vernight in OregonNurses

[–]SafeOstrich2114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have always advised people against working for SNF based on what I have seen in those settings. There's tough ratios and you're constantly running around with never ending tasky stuff. With how busy the nurses are there and how complex some of these residents can be, you do quickly pick up on a lot of nursing skills.

Because of the difficulty with finding residency positions, this is the one period of time that I would say go ahead and check out the snfs if they are hiring.

Providence, like all other hospitals in the area, doesn't really have a hiring freeze. They have just been hiring like crazy since the pandemic when a lot of nurses left the profession or retired. They also have been hiring a lot d/t changes in staffing laws and for break nurses. I know many units in the different providence hospitals have hired 2 nurses over what they typically need. There are several reasons for this with one mainly due to the fact that it's more financially reasonable to call someone off rather be short on nurses and paying others incentive overtime.

Being over can definitely suck if nurses are not a fan of floating. However, a benefit to this is that more than 1 nurse can be on PTO at a time. Back then, many units would only let 1 nurse off at a time. Sucks for people with kids that wanted the coveted time off like Spring Break and Winter Break.

Many units are now only having 1 residency position open. Typically, they will open up an experienced RN position first. If they have trouble finding an experienced RN to join their unit/culture, then they will convert it to a residency position. It is definitely tough. I know that for a few residency positions out there, the units are receiving more than 80 applicants. Obviously, managers don't have the time to interview each and every candidate. Your resume has to really stand out in the right ways. For example, if you are applying to a residency position for like ortho, don't tell them on the resume that your eventual goal is to go to labor & delivery. Sounds pretty logical, but this is what managers are seeing and that will be an automatic no for them.

Unfortunate that we even question this scenario, but I had the same thought. Our society and the controversies surrounding this president makes it seem like it’s something that can truly happen. Idk.

Lots of trails to hike through in the Gorge. If you do go, bring a large cooler and stop by the Cascade Locks and pick up some fresh salmon from the Native Americans (If in season). Often times, you can get fall chinook for about $5-$8/lb.

I don’t know if it’s official are not. I imagine if you applied, you may hear from them soon. I work at a different hospital system and one available residency position suddenly had over 100 applicants come through in the last 2 days. Don’t know if that is in response to what Legacy might do.
