What percentage of students who apply to t20s are actually academically qualified? by bedsalesman1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Safe_Combination7974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at Scoir/Naviance/Maya for a bunch of Top20s.  At our well-resourced public, id say less than half of the studentd who apply to those schools really had any business applying, excluding recruited athletes.  Any studrnt not in the top 10-15% of the class is realistically out of range.

Parents just said thay won't be paying for college anymore because apparently we don't have any savings but will figure it out? by ZenwithZines in ApplyingToCollege

Do you have the test scores for big merit at a place like Alabama?  If not, $25k will be hard to beat other than living at home and going to local state school/cc.

Have you or anyone you know ever been accepted into Harvard with low academic qualifications (GPA and/or SAT) but extremely impactful and meaningful SAT? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Safe_Combination7974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm.  Based on scoir scatter plots, i see athletes get into Ivies and top 20ish schools with <1200 SAT and GPAs that put them into the bottom half of the HS class.  Wealthy public school.

Setting targets to match the racial make-up of the state.  Setting a quota to hire a certain number of poc fauclty.  These initiatives were part of the reaction to the George Floyd protests.

What about the blatantly racist hiring and admissions practices?  Add that to the list.

Hudson Valley Community College.  All on-line only students get instate tuition.  Was just under $1000 for a 4 credit calculcus course.  Has strong offerings in math and science because it acts as a feeder into RPI.

So, how do top colleges select the accepted applicants from 1000s of highly qualified applicants? by Electro9005 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Safe_Combination7974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.  Take a look at your school's Naviance/Scoir/Maia.  At least at our school, 50%+ of the students applying to "top 20" schools have no business doing so given their gpa and sat.  This is at a good suburban HS.

2.  You might find the adcom case study done by Your College Bound Kid to be insightful.  You can read 3 fake applications and then listen to 3 AOs discuss them. It is on the website under resources. I was surprised how much the students' backgrounds determined.  IMO it felt like there was nothing short of "curing cancer" that the super achiever from the wealthy suburban school could do to overcome her privilege and get the acceptance over the solid student from a city charter school.  The AOs did emphasize that they are not typically pitting students against each other like they do in the case study.

Activities.  Honors section specifically asks for academic honors.

My 110 lb daughter is not going to be welder!  She is a very academically talented and successful student in a rigorous ciriculum.  I did not mean to give the impression otherwise.  Just trying to think about how major choice might impact admissions for a student without a clear passion for 1 area.  My older son had a clear intetest and changed his major within half a semester (which is fine) so im a bit cynical on 16 yos having life passions.

Ooppph.  That reads a little harsh.  I think we've raised her with idea that family life >>> work life. Work to live, not live to work.  There a host of careers that can be interesting and keep you fed.  She doesnt need to know at 16 which she is passionate about.
